Test One
Chips are eaten everywhere in fast food restaurants. But, no history of chips could be complete
without a look at the potato’s travel to Europe. The potato was first eaten by the Incas 6000
years ago in South America, and then it was brought to Europe in the 1500's, but the Europeans
did not like it at first. It became popular as a food thanks to Antoine-Augustine Parmentier. This
Frenchman is remembered to this day in his famous French dish « Hachis Parmentier ». But,
how were chips invented ?
Lots of Belgian people say that the potato was first fried in the late 1700's in the region of
Wallonia, where the people traditionally ate small fried fish. But when the rivers froze in winter,
potatoes were sliced into small fish shapes to imitate the traditional food, and then fried in fat.
During the French Revolution, many French people say that the fried potato was invented by
French cooks under the bridges of Paris. The proof, one type of fries eaten in France is « Frites
Pont-Neuf », named after a famous Parisian bridge.

We have three main meals a day. Breakfast is the first meal. It is between 7.00 and 9.00 in
the morning. Lunch is the second meal. It is between 12.00 and 1.30 p.m. For some people,
it is the main meal of the day with a light supper in the evening, but most people today have
a small midday meal, usually sandwiches and perhaps some crisps and some fruit. Dinner is
the last meal. It is in the evening between 8.00 and 9.00. For some people, it is the main meal
of the day. They prepare different kinds of food.
This can of course vary greatly from place to place and culture to culture.
Text Two
English breakfast is a traditional big cooked meal, typically and originally eaten at breakfast time
in the morning. It is known as full breakfast, and it is popular throughout Ireland and Great Britain.
It consists of eggs, bacon, sausages, fried bread or toast, mushrooms, fried or grilled tomatoes
and baked beans all washed down with a cup of tea. Even though not many people eat this
breakfast today, it is always served in hotels and guest houses around Great Britain. Nowadays,
it is just a bowl of cereals, a slice of toast, a glass of orange juice and a cup of coffee.

Everybody needs some loving care, even our planet Earth! Heavy
grey smog hung over many cities all over the world. The destruction
of forests has endangered thousands of animals and plants around
the globe. The water of seas, rivers and lakes is full of poisonous
chemicals that make it bad for human health to eat fish.
Earth Day, on April 22nd, reminds us that we need to protect the
Earth’s beauty and its natural resources. People need to wake up
and learn what they are doing to their planet! Millions of school
children take part in Earth Day projects. Each Earth Day, the people
who study the environment report on the problems that face our
planet. Earth Day pushes people to look for ways to slow the damage we are causing.
Recycling materials like cans, glass, and paper saves natural resources. People are
encouraged to conserve energy like oil, petrol and electricity. Environmental groups encourage

2- YOU CAN DO IT
To the Editor
Dear Editor,
I would like to draw the kind attention of the concerned authorities towards the increasing
problem of pollution. Life in this city needs to be improved. For one thing, there are too
many cars, and there is too much traffic. It is getting worse! There is too much smog,
and the air pollution is terrible. A few years ago, it took me ten minutes to get downtown.
Now it takes me more than thirty minutes during the rush hour.
So what should we do about it? I think there should be more policemen at busy
intersections. They can stop traffic jams. The city does not spend enough on public
transportation. There should be more subway lines, and the train system needs a lot of
improvement.
I hope that the concerned authorities take immediate and urgent action against the
problem of traffic in this city.
Thanking you,
Yours faithfully,
Tom Walker

The Internet
Everywhere you look in today’s society, the Internet has become a major part of everyone's
life. But what really is it? Simply, it is a worldwide system of connected computers that allows
computer users around the world to exchange information.
Its invention has done a world revolution. But, it was not invented by a single person or
company. It was developed by a team of experts. These developments and ideas about the
Internet started in the 1960s in the USA. The United States Department of Defense wanted a
computer network to help the American military. In the 1970s, scientists worked on it. Then in
the 1980s, telephone companies made it possible to communicate on the computer network
in many more countries. An international computer language was born then, and the Net
travelled worldwide.
You can use it nowadays for many things. You can send e-mails, book a holiday or even
buy a product on line. You can watch a video or download music. You can play chess with a
partner in Moscow or chat with people from all over the world. But, it can be harmful to users,
so be careful every time you use it!

Test Two
What will our future look like by the year 2100? It is sure that life on the Earth will change
a lot. But, will things ever change for the better?
Our population may reach over 22 billion people. So, our cities may grow enormously,
and our small towns and villages may not exist anymore. A lot of animals and plants may
disappear along with the rain forests, too. Besides, we may live in floating cities built on seas
and rivers.
Our supplies of oil will run out, but scientists may possibly develop new forms of energy
like the sun and the wind, which do not pollute the air, so the Earth’s temperature will not
increase much more than it is today. At least, let’s hope so!
Our grand-children will not eat as much natural food as we do today. They may have
meals cooked by robots. They may speak the same language all over the world, and they will
probably spend less time at work because machines may do the job for them. They will surely
travel faster, and they may use flying cars. Who knows? But, will they enjoy themselves or
not. Enjoyment may not mean anything then.

I live in a very old town which is surrounded by beautiful woods. It is a famous beauty
spot. On Sundays, hundreds of people come from the city to see our town and to walk
through the woods.
Visitors have been asked to keep the woods clean and tidy. Litter baskets have been
placed under the trees, but people still throw their rubbish everywhere.
Last Wednesday, I went for a walk in the woods. What I saw made me very sad. I
counted seven old cars and three old refrigerators. The litter baskets were empty and the
ground was covered with pieces of paper, cigarette-ends, old tyres, empty bottles, plastic
baskets and rusty tins. Among the rubbish I found a sign which says « Anyone who leaves
litter in these woods will be sanctioned ».

ENDANGERED ANIMALS
You can still see blue whales, pandas, rhinoceroses, elephants and cheetahs. But, these
wild animals are in the way of disappearing forever one day.
Chemicals that pollute the environment may endanger them. Hunting may do, too. These
animals are in trouble because people are destroying their habitats. That’s why we have
created wild areas such as: parks, natural zoos and national forests where animals can live
quietly in peace.
Text Two
THE CHEETAH
The cheetah is the fastest animal on land. It is a mammal which lives in dry places in
Africa. It has a pale brown coat covered with black spots. It is about 1m50 long, and can
weigh up to 70 kilos. It feeds on meat. It may live up to 12 years in the wild.
Today, the number of cheetahs in the world has been getting smaller. People hunt and kill
them for their skins. As a result, they are endangered. So, if we do not save them, they will
disappear forever.

We all know that a little heat is very important for living on the Earth. But, what may happen
when the Earth gets warmer ?
Scientists say the Earth may be hotter a hundred years from now. Global warming is
destroying life ! This problem appeared many years ago when man began cutting forests
down and burning fossil fuels like oil and natural gas, and even coal to get energy. It is also
due to those smokes coming from factories and the use of so many cars. All these have
increased CO2 and other gases into the air. These gases keep heat more effectively and
make the Earth warmer.
As a result, the weather is changing. It is much hotter. A lot of lakes and rivers are drying
up. Some lands used for agriculture are becoming desert. Ice is melting at the poles. Some
wild animals and plants are disappearing. There are more floods today, and millions of people
all over the world are losing their homes. It’s time to stop this disaster !

opinion and do the activities that follow.
MOTHER TERESA
Mother Teresa never starred a Hollywood film, and she never took part
in sports competitions, but I think she deserves to belong to the world of
great people. There are four reasons for that.
First, she was a woman of peace and love. She never used violence
against those people who opposed her. She always used to smile and
sow love everywhere she went saying « Peace begins with a smile »
and « If you judge people, you have no time to love them. »
Second, she was a courageous heroine. She knew there were people
who wanted to prevent her from doing what she believed in, but she
did not care and continued her way with big devotion saying « If you are kind, people may
accuse you of ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. »
Third, she was a militant who devoted her entire life to the service of the poor, the helpless,
the sick and the orphans. She founded, for that, the Missionaries of Charity in India first, and
then in other countries. Governments, charity organizations and prominent individuals have
been inspired by her work.
Finally, she was a very modest person though she was very famous all over the world. Her
obtaining of the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1979 and other awards did not make of her an
arrogant woman.
Mother Teresa spent her whole life teaching the world lessons of love, peace, forgiveness,
tolerance and respect. So, Catholics all over the world should be proud of her and should
celebrate her at least once a year.

THE TASSILI
An Appointment With The Prehistory
The Algerian Sahara is not sun and sand only, but it is a world full of immense shadows
and wonderful oases. It is also the memory of talented artists who left a true treasure in the
Tassili caves where they used to live. Numerous frescoes are found there. They represent
wild beasts, farm animals and a lot of men. They were done by our ancestors in colossal and
tiny shapes. They narrate the human life which goes back to 6000 B.C. in scenes of housing,
hunting, sowing and fighting.
Anthropologists have classified them in four periods to show the evolution of mankind. The
last one was the Period of the Camel when early people started to use the writing symbols.
These nice paintings in the south-east of Algeria are now within the list of the World Heritage
Committee which helps to protect, maintain and restore the historical sites all over the world.
Well, if you want to know more and more about the Tassili or if you want to meet the Prehistory,
you should just book a ticket and I am sure you will spend pleasant moments with the old
ages there!

the USA was born after a brave struggle led by George Washington. The road to freedom
was not easy. It took time and souls.
Today, most towns, big and small ones, celebrate the fourth of July with parades and
wonderful fireworks. Families celebrate with barbecues or picnics.

Thanksgiving Day is another national holiday in the USA. It is a day when Americans give
thanks for the harvest. It is on the fourth Thursday in November. In 1620, a religious group
wanted to separate from the Church of England because they wanted to make religion

Prophet Muhammad
(Peace and Blessings be Upon Him)
Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) was born in 570 in Mecca.
His father Abdullah died before his birth and his mother Amna died while he was a child.
Therefore, his grand-father Abdul-Muttaleb took care of him, and later his uncle Abu-
Taleb did.
At the age of 25, he got married for the first time to Khadidja (May Allah be Pleased with
Her) who loved him for his honesty.
At the age of 40, he received the Koran through the archangel Gabriel in Cave Hira where
Muhammad used to go. Some Arabs in Mecca believed him and converted to Islam and
many of them refused that. They laughed at him and some even stoned him. But, the
Prophet (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) did not give up, and continued to preach
patiently. In 622, he migrated to Medina. There, people welcomed him and listened to
him with great interest. In 630, he returned to Mecca triumphantly. There, he managed to
destroy the idols round the Kaaba, and since then, the Islam has spread quickly all over
the world. The Prophet (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) got a terrible fever in 632
and died of it.

I can still remember that disastrous sailing holiday……
Bill and I left Miami one summer weekend on our annual sailing holiday

a couple of weeks.
During our holiday, we saw a large group of whales. We were very
excited. Unfortunately, while we were watching them, the whales began
to hit the side of the boat. Suddenly, water started flooding in, and we
realized that we were in trouble. We quickly jumped into the lifeboat
while the boat was sinking. Soon, it disappeared under the sea.
Fortunately, we had enough food and water for twenty days. We also
had a fishing line. It helped us survive during our terrible experience.
For the next fifty days we caught about ten fish a day and ate them raw.
We drank only rain water. We saw about twenty ships, but although we
waved and shouted while they were passing, nobody saw us. We were
becoming weaker and weaker. Then, just as we were beginning to lose
hope, a fishing boat rescued us. Our disastrous holiday was over.

off his coat, I will be the winner », said the Wind. « OK, try ! », replied the
Sun smiling. The Wind began to blow and blow. The harder and colder it
blew, the tighter the man pulled his coat round his body to protect himself
against the wind. « I give up, I can’t do », said the
Wind. « Come on! It's your turn to try » And the Sun started to shine and shine gently. It shone
