Course Synopsis This course is intended for undergraduate students who are required to pursue
their degree studies in English. The course focuses primarily on the literacy
skills of research – reading and writing with a secondary focus on listening and
speaking skills. Listening and speaking skills are emphasized and evaluated
during lectures and in-class participations. Grammar and vocabulary skills are
integrated in all the steps.

This is a 6 – hour per week course that comprises of 3 hours of mass lectures
and 3 hours of tutorials sessions: 2 hours in the computer lab and 1 hour in
tutorial room. The course material is also available at http://10.23.1.250/portal/

This course is designed to equip students with the abilities to:


 Gather the source materials needed to complete their research
papers independently.
 Discuss the views and findings (online: in the discussion board
and chat room or face to face).
 Write a research paper using APA format.

The research paper requirements are as follows:


i. 2, 500 words.
ii. Topic must be related to Kuliyyah.
iii. The style of writing is argumentative.
iv. The inclusion of Islamic Perspective in the research paper.

This course is divided into ten steps:


i. STEP 1: Choosing a topic
ii. STEP 2: Gathering information
iii. STEP 3: Developing argumentative thesis statement
iv. STEP 4: Evaluating materials
v. STEP 5: Paraphrasing, summarizing, quoting and
synthesizing
vi. STEP 6: Outlining the paper
vii. STEP 7: Starting to write
viii. STEP 8: Citing resources and writing references
ix. STEP 9: Writing drafts and editing
x. STEP 10: Preparing for the exam

Course Objectives
General Objectives:

At the end of this course students should be able to:

i) Identify Kuliyyah related topics/ issues and formulated


argumentative thesis statement.
ii) Read academic texts efficiently and skillfully.
iii) Choose topic related to their Kuliyyah and formulate
argumentative thesis statements.
iv) Find relevant academic supporting materials for the
argumentative research papers.
v) Write argumentative research paper using APA format.
vi) Provide Islamic perspectives in relation to topics or issues
presented in research paper.
vii) Give briefing on topics, views, arguments and findings in class
in a fluent, clear and concise manner.

Specific Objectives

At the end of each step students should be able to:

1. STEP 1:
i) Identify possible kuliyyah related topics
ii) Consider suitable strategies for choosing a topic.
iii) Identify relevant academic sources for research
information.
2. STEP 2:
i) Locate and gather relevant academic sources.
ii) Familiarize themselves with library personnel.
iii) Use library and computer sources.
3. STEP 3:
i) Narrow topics for research papers.
ii) Write and stand with effective and focused working thesis
statements.
iii) Support thesis statements with possible arguments and
logical reasoning.

4. STEP 4:
i) Analyze academic sources from secondary ones.
ii) Read effectively and critically.
iii) Provide critical evaluation of primary and secondary
sources.
iv) Select and use relevant academic sources for
argumentative research paper.
5. STEP 5:
i) Differentiate the 4 writing techniques used for in-text
citations-paraphrasing, summarizing, quoting, and
synthesizing.
ii) Provide reasons for the chosen writing techniques to be
used in argumentative writing paper.
iii) Demonstrate the use of the 4 writing techniques-
paraphrasing, summarizing, quoting, and synthesizing
academic source material in writing exercises.

6. STEP 6:
i) State the requirements of the outline.
ii) Produce an outline of an argumentative essay.
iii) State the requirements of the term paper.

7. STEP 7:
i) Use discourse markers that signal the functional value of a
sentence in argumentative writing.
ii) Use acknowledging phrases in argumentative writing.
iii) Use reporting verbs and nouns in argumentative writing.
iv) Write paragraphs with topic sentences, supporting details
and concluding sentences.
v) Write coherent argumentative paragraphs and essays.

8. STEP 8:
i) Acknowledge the work of other authors by using in-text
citations and avoid plagiarism.
ii) Use in-text citations effectively and accurately in a
consistent manner using the American Psychological
Association (APA) format.
iii) List references of academic sources correctly according to
the APA format.
9. STEP 9:
i) Organize parts and functions of the research papers
according to the required layout format.
ii) Peer edit the language and techniques used in
argumentative research papers.
iii) Produce coherent and complete argumentative research
paper for submission.
10. STEP 10:
i) State the topic areas tested in the final examination.
ii) Provide answers for final examination questions using the
correct tenses.
iii) Provide answer for final examination questions using
appropriate phrases and discourse markers.
iv) Provide answer for final examination questions using
appropriate techniques for acknowledging authors.
v) Answer examination question within time.
