Message from the Consul General

O
n behalf of my wife, Mariza and my son Matthew, and my Philippine Consulate General Office in San
Francisco family, I wish to congratulate and send my warmest felicitations to the the Filipino-American
Arts Exposition (FAAE) headed by its President, Mr. Al Perez, on the occasion of the 27th Anniversary of the
Pistahan Parade and Festival.

This year’s festivities are done in an unprecedented milieu -- a pandemic that has affected millions of people
around the globe and which could have stopped us from celebrating our Philippine history and culture.

The pandemic comes with the proverbial blessings in disguise. With technology, Pistahan is able to reach more
Filipinos, even beyond the United States.

Thanks to the persistent and resilient nature of the Filipino, the pandemic has not only made us more creative as
a people, but rather it has inspired us to forge on and continue to celebrate the best of our identity and culture.

Pistahan has continued to provide Filipinos a platform to honor one’s roots and showcase the richness of our HENRY S. BUENSURTO, JR.
culture. CONSUL GENERAL

The Consulate General is proud to partner with FAAE and the Pistahan Parade and Festival under the ambit of
the Spark*Connect*Empower* Movement. The SCE has served as our framework in doing our mission here in the
United States. We aim to spark curiosity, interest and pride in our roots, in our culture and in our heritage and
connect Filipinos with their culture and heritage and help empower them in the process.

It is our fervent hope that we are all able to connect with our roots, empowered with the knowledge of our strength
as a people. We hope that we are all able to connect with one another with the aim of helping those in need during
the pandemic. We pray and hope that we all come out stronger and more resilient after this crisis.

Pinay ako, taas noo. Pinoy ako, proud ako! Mabuhay!

HENRY S. BUENSURTO, JR.

Pistahan goes virtual to celebrate
“One Community: United in Hope and Healing”
By Rob Chua

T
his year’s Pistahan Parade is
unlike any other that came
before it. For this, our 27th
year, Pistahan will be
conducted completely virtually to
ensure the safety and health of parade
goers in the light of COVID-19. Indeed,
this year has posed many challenges
to our community in the advent of so
many momentous global events:
COVID-19 has affected the world over
in ways many of us have never
experienced in our lifetimes. As rallies
and conversations on social justice
pervade the media, we accentuate
the sentiment of Pistahan that’s
inextricably tied to a community’s
desire for hope and healing. This year
we usher in a new parade format that
echoes that sentiment and introduce
the #PistahanParadeChallenge!

This year’s Pistahan Parade is taking a

new form, utilizing produced videos
showcasing our contingents’ creativity
and talents. Short form videos in social
media platforms like Tik-Tok, Instagram,
and YouTube have dominated the
zeitgeist. The #PistahanParadeChallenge
affords participants an opportunity to
demonstrate cultural pride, heritage,

M
aligayang Pistahan,
mga kaibigan at
kapamilya! Welcome,
my friends and family to
our 27th Anniversary of Pistahan
Virtual Parade and Festival. Known to
be the largest celebration of Filipino-
Americans in the United States,
Pistahan attracts approximately
100,000 people over the course of one
weekend in experiencing Philippine
culture and traditions of art, dance,
music and food.

This year marks a different approach

due to the Covid-19 pandemic and
other current events happening in our
community, like the Black Lives Matter
(BLM) protests. For the first time in our
Pistahan history, the Pistahan dream
team of volunteers dedicated their
time and talents in transforming the
Pistahan Parade and Festival into a
virtual festivity. For the first time in
Pistahan history, there will be
webcasts of live-streamed
performances on Facebook and
YouTube, and some pre-recordings
