E
I
t is an honor to be chosen as this year’s Hermana Mayor for the 27th
Annual Pistahan Festival. I’m very excited to welcome you to the first
ever Virtual Pistahan Parade and Festival! In a time of such uncertainty,
and a time where we must physically distance ourselves from our
friends and family. It brings me so much joy to be able to carry on this
celebration and bring our community together.
The theme this year, One Community United through Hope and Healing,
reminds me of the strength and resilience of the Filipino community in the
Bay Area. We have faced many challenges in our history and persevered
through them all. I have no doubt in my mind that we will come through on
the other side of this pandemic stronger than before. And while we may not
be able to come together in person now, I hope this virtual festival serves
as a reminder of the hope we hold for the future when we are able to come
together in person and celebrate our food, our art, our traditions, and our
people in person. For now, please take full advantage of all of the virtual
offerings part of this year’s celebrations. Enjoy takeout from the pop up food
market, browse offerings from local merchants at the Sari Sari marketplace,
and tune in for two days of amazing programing.
Thank you to the Filipino American Arts Expo for innovating this year’s
festival and bringing it online. Your commitment to celebrating Filipino
American heritage is unparalleled and we are eternally grateful for it.

Message from the FAAE President
H
ello and welcome to the 27th Annual Pistahan Parade and Festival.
Pistahan has always been a festival out of San Francisco with over 80,000
people attending the Pistahan Parade & Festival each year. Pistahan has
represented the largest celebration of Filipinos in the United States. As we
decided to go entirely digital this year, we took it as an opportunity to extend the
celebration of Filipino community, culture and cuisine to new communities across
the globe.
What’s amazing this year? Pistahan is creating new connections, discovering
hidden collaborations, and connecting with new communities from all around
the globe, from all corners of the U.S. – Los Angeles, Oregon, Illinois, Boston and
Washington DC, and from around the world including the Gulf Region, UAE, Australia,
and of course, the Philippines.
We’re proud of our partnership with Kumu, the Pinoy live-streaming super
app that’s taken off in the Philippines. We launched our first-ever international
community talent show through a collaboration with Kumu. As the fastest growing
social media app in the Philippines, Kumu’s Pistahan campaign sparked hundreds of
livestream entries from over a hundred Kumu streamers — all bursting with creative
talents and potential — which we are proud to feature in our entertainment lineup. AL S. PEREZ
I’m so grateful to our amazing volunteers. They have literally transformed from PRESIDENT
physical event experts into digital and virtual reality magicians. Our technical team
spent countless hours, day and night, figuring how do make things work. Our
production team wrangled folks around the world to sort, sequence and schedule
the shows. W’re excited to present two days of entertainment that will amaze and
amuse you.
May I request for your patience and consideration? This weekend’s virtual format
is our first attempt to bring our festivities to homes of our viewers throughtout the
world. We ask for your patience and understanding ahead of time for any difficulties
we might exprience. We hope you’ll enjoy watching our show as much as we enjoy
producing it for you. Let’s celebrate as One Community: United in Hope and Healing.

Although we come together a different way this year, our commitment to everyone’s health
and well-being is strong as ever. During this unprecedent time, I appreciate your commitment and creativity
in demonstrating how the Filipino Community will always rise above any challenge it faces. The theme this

You will be able to enjoy two days of programming celebrating heritage, art, culture, health, and so
much more, all at the comfort of your own home.

O
n behalf of my wife, Mariza and my son Matthew, and my Philippine Consulate General Office in San
Francisco family, I wish to congratulate and send my warmest felicitations to the the Filipino-American
Arts Exposition (FAAE) headed by its President, Mr. Al Perez, on the occasion of the 27th Anniversary of the
Pistahan Parade and Festival.

This year’s festivities are done in an unprecedented milieu -- a pandemic that has affected millions of people
around the globe and which could have stopped us from celebrating our Philippine history and culture.

The pandemic comes with the proverbial blessings in disguise. With technology, Pistahan is able to reach more
Filipinos, even beyond the United States.

Thanks to the persistent and resilient nature of the Filipino, the pandemic has not only made us more creative as
a people, but rather it has inspired us to forge on and continue to celebrate the best of our identity and culture.

Pistahan goes virtual to celebrate
“One Community: United in Hope and Healing”

T
his year’s Pistahan Parade is
unlike any other that came
before it. For this, our 27th
year, Pistahan will be
conducted completely virtually to
ensure the safety and health of parade
goers in the light of COVID-19. Indeed,
this year has posed many challenges
to our community in the advent of so
many momentous global events:
COVID-19 has affected the world over
in ways many of us have never
experienced in our lifetimes. As rallies
and conversations on social justice
pervade the media, we accentuate
the sentiment of Pistahan that’s
inextricably tied to a community’s
desire for hope and healing. This year
we usher in a new parade format that
echoes that sentiment and introduce
the #PistahanParadeChallenge!

This year’s Pistahan Parade is taking a

new form, utilizing produced videos
showcasing our contingents’ creativity
and talents. Short form videos in social
media platforms like Tik-Tok, Instagram,
and YouTube have dominated the
zeitgeist. The #PistahanParadeChallenge
affords participants an opportunity to
demonstrate cultural pride, heritage,
and perhaps a few dance moves in
short 30-second clips that our team will
edit together to form our parade
procession.

As with tradition, Pistahan will
deliberate on the winners of best
contingent, best spectacle, best
performance, best dressed, and most
spirited. Each contingent has received
a special #PistahanParadeChallenge

ow do we distinguish
knowledge from wisdom?
Smart people seek to know the
right answers. Wise people
seek and ask the right questions. Knowledge
flourishes as we look outside ourselves for
answers about our visible world. Wisdom
proliferates as we look deep inside into our
invisible world of emotions, hopes, dreams
and imagination. In our introspection and
self-examination, we develop insight,
hindsight, foresight and then discover our
out-a-sight true self. A GURO is both smart
and wise, knowing himself, mastering skills
of his Art and developing love of wisdom.
Guro Dan Arca Inosanto is such a man
exemplifying virtues of being smart and
wise. He is the world’s top authority in Jeet
Kune Do (JKD) and Philippine Martial Arts
(PMA). We’re honored to have Guro Dan as
our Grand Marshal of our 2020 Pistahan
Parade and Festival.
FAMILY HISTORY
Born in Stockton, California on July 24,
1936 during the 1928-1945 silent generation
– Dan exemplifies a strong, silent persona.
In fourth grade, he was beaten up. He
remained silent, but upon discovery his
grandpa Pepe Arca taught him the secrets
of Philippine Martial Arts. His mother Mary
Arca (b.1912) valued education. She
graduated high school as valedictorian at
age 16. She received scholarship to attend
Stanford, when only five women were
allowed. She declined and waited for better
social climate to enter college. Dan’s
father, Sebastian Navarro Inosanto, became
a political activist. He established a
Farmer’s Union years before Cesar Chavez.
Sweating for years with little support, he
redirected his efforts after planting the
seeds for justice and equality. Upon his
death (d.1989), Cesar Chavez sent
representatives to pay their respects.
The great (1901-1927) generation worked
hard to be accepted into mainstream
America. Dan’s Aunt Flora Arca became the
first Filipino to graduate from UCLA and the
first Filipino certified teacher in Stockton,
California. She was followed by Dan’s Aunt
Connie, then by Dan’s older sister Lilian
Paula Inosanto Howe who died in early
1950s, then by his mom who returned to
college at age 40 graduating in late 1950s.

Paula Penderson (b.1954) ministered by a
friend of his Muay Thai boxing instructor
in Las Vegas. When Dan was hospitalized
two years earlier with swollen body looking
like elephant man, Paula was his nurse who
cared for him. Dan and Paula had two
children, Lance and Danielle.
TRAGEDY
In 1973 at age 32, Bruce’s life abruptly
ended. He died of cerebral edema while in
Hong Kong. Upon Linda’s requests, Bruce’s
body was flown back home to be buried in
Seattle. Dan became one of six pallbearers
along with James Coburn, Steve McQueen,
Ray Chin, Taky Kimura, and Robert Lee
(Bruce’s brother). Dan became deeply
depressed with Bruce’s demise. He
withdrew from public eye. Encouraged by a
private letter from actor Steve McQueen in
1975, Dan resumed teaching martial arts
under the JKD guideline “keep the numbers
low, but the quality high”. Eventually, he
complied with popular demand and trained
more martial arts students and instructors.
RECOVERY
Dan found solace in writing. To honor
his heritage and ancestors, Dan published
his book The Filipino Martial Arts as
taught by Dan Inosanto. In memory of his
best friend, Dan singlehandedly wrote
classic books on Jeet Kune Do – Jeet Kune
Do: The Art and Philosophy of Bruce Lee; A
Guide to Martial Arts Training with
Equipment; and Absorb What Is Useful.
Later, he collaborated with French savate
champ Salem Assli in writing Jeet Kune Do
and the introduction to Jeet Kune Do:
Conditioning and Grappling Methods.

PROMINENCE
Dan became the World’s Top Authority on
Philippine Martial Arts (PMA) and Jeet
Kune Do (JKD). During Filipino-American
National History Month on October 27, 2010,
Smithsonian Institute honored Dan as he
demonstrated mastery of PMA weaponry
and empty-hand combat. To extol his
remarkable achievements, Perry William
Kelly wrote his biography entitled Dan
Inosanto – The Man, The Teacher, The Artist.
MAGAZINES
Black Belt Magazine Hall of Fame
inducted Dan as “Man of the Year” in 1996.
Dan graced magazine covers worldwide.

On the silver screen, Dan debuted in The
Game of Death (1972) film with Bruce Lee.
He began appearing in numerous action
movies – The Killer Elite (1975), Game of
Death (1978), The Chinese Stuntman (1981)
as Filipino Fighter, Skirmish (1981), Long de
ying zi (1981), Sharky’s Machine (1981) with
Burt Reynolds, Big Trouble in Little China
(1986) with Kurt Russell, Out of Justice
(1991) fighting sticks with Steven Segal,
Brazilian Brawl (2003), Big Stan (2007),
and Redbelt (2008). He also dabbled as TV
stuntman actor in Green Hornet “Praying
Mantis” episode.

As Bruce Lee’s sole certified instructor
in his three martial arts systems, Dan
frequently appeared in movie

NFL SPORTS
Setting new records, Dan became the
first martial artist in NFL. He taught
martial arts to Dallas Cowboys under
Coach Tom Landry. He engaged players in
Chia Sao sparring and PMA unarmed
combat with strikes, parry, grapple, clinch,
twist, evade, lift, throw. They developed
focus, flexibility, speed, power, stamina that
helped them excel and become NFL
champions (1972, 1978).
ACADEMY
Dan remains humble as a student –
learning new systems, discarding what
does not work, and making something
unique. To synthesize his knowledge of
PMA, JFG, JKD, BLTCG, other mixed
martial arts (MMA) – Dan trained under
various schools and consolidated them into
his Inosanto Academy of Martial Arts Ltd.

His pre-eminent students include his
stunt-actress daughter Diana Lee Inosanto
(named after Bruce) and Brandon Lee
(deceased son of Bruce). His other
prominent pupils include Ron Balicki (Dan’s
son-in-law stuntman), Chai Sirisute (founder
of Muay Thai Boxing Association of USA),
Denzel Washington and Forrest Whittaker
(both Academy Award-winning actors),
Edgar Sulite (Lameco Escrima founder), Jeff
Imada (fight choreographer of Bourne Series,
Iron Man 2, Green Hornet, Hanna).
LOVE LIFE
Admired and endeared by many, Guro
Dan Inosanto has remarkable lifelong
achievements that make him a living
legend. As One Community: United in
Hope and Healing – Guro Dan shares his
pearls of wisdom. “Love is the highest art.
In ancient times you trained so hard, not for
the sake of killing people, but for the love of
your family. For the love of your mother,
your father, your children, your tribe and
your body. It is the love of life. That’s why
we train so hard, so we can preserve life.”

Marjan Philhour
I
n the city by the bay where
cable cars climb halfway to the
stars, visitors worldwide sing “I
left my heart in San Francisco.”
Some never left. They made our city,
their home. Chinese immigrants
settled in Chinatown, Japanese and
Koreans in Japantown, Filipinos in
South of Market and nearby Daly
City, Russians in Russian Hill, and
Italians in North Beach with their
native son A.P. Gianini establishing
the world-renowned Bank of America
in 1904. Indeed, home is where the
heart is… where love flourishes.
Marjan Philhour is the fruit of such
love. We honor her and her husband
Byron as our 2020 Pistahan Hermana
and Hermano Mayor.
GROWING YEARS
In the late 1960s while attending
San Francisco State University,
accounting student Mark Ghafour-
pour of Iran met and fell in love with
fellow business student Alicia
Payuran Tinitigan of the Philippines.
They got engaged. They got married.
They settled in Richmond District of
San Francisco and had their first
child. On May 15, 1974 Marjan was
born at French Hospital along Geary
Boulevard. As the eldest, Marjan
taught her siblings Daryush (1975),
Charles (1984), Sarah (1986) to
respect their parents, to love their
neighbors, and to relish family
dishes from Iran and Philippines.
Marjan learned Tagalog expressions
from her mom and Farsi greetings
from her dad. She speaks English
and French fluently. C’est la vie,
n’est-ce pas? Merci! Au revoir!
LEARNING YEARS
“Joie de vivre” describes Marjan’s
childhood. She enjoyed school. In
1978 she began studying at French-
American bilingual school and in
1982 at Benjamin Fox School, both in
San Francisco. In 1983, she traveled
to Makati, Philippines where she
briefly studied at San Agustin
elementary school. She returned to
San Mateo, California to continue
studies at Fiesta Gardens elementary

(1984-1985), Borel middle school
(1985-1988) and finally at Aragon
High School (1988-1992). In 1992, she
was accepted to the best public
university in America which is
known as “Poor Man’s Harvard.” In
1996, she graduated from University
of California, Berkeley.
EARNING YEARS
With her newly minted baccalau-
reate degree in Political Science,
Marjan headed straight to our
nation’s capital. She served as
special assistant to U.S. Congress-
man Tom Lantos of San Mateo
(1996-1997). From 1997-1998, she
worked as staff assistant for U.S.
Congresswoman Nita Lowey of New
York. From 1998-1999, she served as
legislative assistant to U.S. Congress-
woman Lynn Rivers of Michigan.
From 1999-2000, she worked as legis-
lative assistant of minority labor
staff for the U.S. House of Represen-
tatives Committee on Education and
Work Force. From 2000 to 2001, She
worked as program consultant for
Leading Authorities Inc., providing
speakers and entertainers to
corporate and public events of
Fortune 1000 clients.
In 2001, Marjan returned to the
Golden State serving as senior
advisor to the Chief of Staff at the
Office of California Governor Gray
Davis in Sacramento until 2003.
From 2003 to 2004, she traveled
frequently between San Francisco
and San Diego as caucus coordinator
and northwest deputy finance
director for then Democratic

Presidential candidate John Kerry. In
2005 Marjan returned to Sacramento
as regional director of Alliance for a
Better California. Then she worked
as finance director of Joe Nation for
Congress in San Rafael.
Thereafter she settled back home
in San Francisco to build her nest
and raise her family.
NESTING YEARS
On July 8, 2006, at the beautiful
resort of Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe,
California, Marjan married her
dashing beau, Byron Philhour. Marjan
met her husband through a blind date
arranged by Byron’s brother Bob
Philhour of LA Times whom she met
while working in Sacramento with
Governor Davis (2003). Born on June
1973, Byron’s emotional Cancer finds
serenity with her Taurus stability.
Any crab who locks his claws on a
Taurus will undoubtedly never want
to let her go as she can truly under-
stand and comfort him like no other.
He has never stopped holding her,
kissing her and hugging her lovingly
to this day.
Marjan describes Byron as smart,
kind, caring, and inspiring. As a
career educator, he is brilliant and
impressive. He taught at San
Francisco State University, Saint
Ignatius College Preparatory, and
served as Academic Dean of San
Francisco University High School.
He acquired his PhD degree in
Physics from California Institute of
Technology (CalTech) where world
renowned Astro-Physicist Stephen
Hawkins did most of his seminal

After their honeymoon, Byron and
Marjan built their family nest in the
golden city of her birth. San Fran-
cisco is where their hearts reside and
where the fruits of their love blossom.
PARENTING YEARS
Joey, their eldest, was born in
April 2007. He exemplifies leader-
ship with his “strong but silent”
Taurean demeanor. He is smart, kind,
and caring. While campaigning in
their neighborhood, he wrote on the
leaflet, “Sorry we missed you, vote
for Marjan,” Their neighbors find
him charming.
Sophia, their second child, was
born in September 2009. Like her
name suggests, she is wise and
emotionally intelligent. She can read
a person’s mood and respond
appropriately. With her Virgo
tendencies, she is meticulous,
industrious, and a relentless
perfectionist.
Natalie, their youngest, was born
in August 2013. She is gregarious,
magnanimous, and easily makes
friends. Her Leo personality makes
her the life of the party. Her amusing
expressions keep guests entertained.

unique, individual gifts and needs
and being committed to encourag-
ing them to develop their self-es-
teem so each can make an active
contribution to the community ~

Byron and Marjan enrolled their
three children at St. Thomas of the
Apostle school located next to their
Catholic Church in their Richmond
district neighborhood. Joey attends
8th grade and graduating middle
school. Sophia attends 5th grade
and graduating elementary school.
Natalie attends 2nd grade and
learning to read time and do
addition and subtraction with a
clock. All are adjusting well with
online learning during Covid-19
social distancing.
In her spare time, Marjan enjoys
yoga, pilates, walking, and running.
With her family she enjoys walking
to nearby Golden Gate Park and
eating in Filipino, Persian, Mexican,
and Shabu Shabu restaurants. With
her children, she enjoys playing
board games like Trouble, Settlers of
Catan, Banana Gram and Scrabble.
With her friends, she enjoys attend-
ing community events and dining at
Irma’s, Kadok’s, and Goldilocks.
CAREER RESTART
While raising her children, Marjan
worked at home or near home. She
worked as an independent consul-
tant in politics, communications, and
event management from 2006-2009,
then as CEO of The California Group
from 2009-2013, then as President of
Philhour & Associate from 2013-2018.
Since 2018, she has ventured with
her sister as co-owner of Village
Place, LLC providing gifts, pottery,
and classes.

PERSONAL DISPOSITION
Marjan said that she’s ENFJ based
on her Myers-Brigg personality test.
This means that she’s Extravert (E),
Intuitive (N), Feeling (F), and Judging
(J) individual. ENFJ personalities are
known as Protagonists. They are full
of passion, compassion, and charisma.
Forming two percent of the popula-
tion, they become politicians, coaches,
and teachers inspiring others to do
well and to achieve great things. With
confidence generating massive
influence, Marjan is a Protagonist who
takes great pride and joy in mobilizing
people to collaborate and ameliorate
their community. As a natural-born
leader, she is prime for politics.
POLITICAL ASPIRATIONS
From seeing things happen,
Marjan aspires to make things
happen. She decided to enter
politics. For the first time in 2016,
Marjan ran as a San Francisco
Supervisor candidate in her home
District 1. Considered to be a
novice and political unknown, her
chances among ten candidates
seem to be pessimistic. With her
confidence and charm, she orga-
nized her successful campaign that
raised over $650,000. She qualified
for the final runoff. She garnered
the second largest votes with 10,634
(47.6%) losing only by 1,053 votes to
Sandra Lee Fewer who won with
11,087 (52.4%).
‘Tis better to have loved and lost
than never to have loved at all. Love
is sweeter the second time around, so
Marjan filed her candidacy to run
again for Supervisor in 2020. This
time she has growing support to win
on Tuesday, November 3 election
day. She received enthusiastic
endorsements from San Francisco
Mayor London Breed, California
Board of Equalization Chair Malia
Cohen, State Senator Scott Wiener,
Assembly member David Chu,
Assessor-Recorder Carmen Chu,
County Sheriff Paul Miyamoto, and
more. She has received outstanding
commendations from Planning
Association of the Richmond district
and Balboa Village Merchants
Association where she serves as
Board Member. Her political future
looks auspicious.
Gaining national recognition as one
of the Top 100 Filipina Women in the
United States, she hopes to be the First
Filipino San Francisco Supervisor. She
offers solutions to numerous problems
that beset the city such as campaign
finance, public health, quality
education, homelessness, clean streets,
public safety, supporting small
businesses, housing, and transporta-

UNITED IN HOPE AND HEALING
Promoting “One Community:
United in Hope and Healing” during
this Covid-19 pandemic, Marjan and
Byron organize volunteers to deliver
personal protective equipment
(PPE), to collect and distribute food
for the needy, to shop for groceries,
and to pick up prescriptions for
neighbors who are home-bound.
They are movers and shakers who
make things happen. They join the
ranks of previously honored leaders.
Marjan and Byron express their
deepest gratitude as we hail them as
our Hermana and Hermano Mayor
for our 27th Annual Pistahan in 2020.
With inherent optimism of being
American and the resiliency of being
Filipino, Marjan is hopeful that our
community will heal. She finds
comfort in the adage: “it is not how
hard you fall but how high you bounce
back that determines your success in
life.” She relies on her attitude and
aptitude to reach higher altitudes in
life and acknowledges that our worth
is determined not by what we have but
by how much we give.
As she gives back to our commu-
nity, Marjan joins prominent native
sons and daughters born in San
Francisco. They include Ansel
Adams, Bruce Lee, Clint Eastwood,
Carlos Santana, Darren Criss, Ellen
DeGeneres, Gavin Newsom, George
Lucas, Huey Lewis, Jerry Brown,
London Breed, Nancy Pelosi, Robin
Williams, Steve Jobs, Tom Hanks, and
William Randolph Hearst. The song

Pavilion explores the Inner meaning of The
Hinabi Project (THP) and the artwork of seven
artists. All these are featured at www.
pistahan.net.
ART Pavilion manager Edwin Lozada from
Philippine American Writers and Artists, Inc.
(PAWA) and The Hinabi Project (THP) hosts the
Art Pavilion segments of the Pistahan
Facebook Livestream with interviews and art
demos. The first four of the guest artists
appear on Saturday, August 8 and the other
four on Sunday, August 9, both events
happening after the Culinary Pavilion
scheduled for 12pm.
Bren Bataclan was born in the
Philippines, raised in Daly City, California, and
based in Boston, Massachusetts. Receiving his
BA in design from UCLA (summa cum laude)
and his MA in computer animation from
Ohio State University, Bren taught design
and computer animation at the University of
Massachusetts Amherst and Boston
Museum School.
Bren left his paintings in public spaces
with a note saying, “This painting is yours if
you promise to smile at random people
more often.” He has given 3,000 paintings
throughout 50 states and 80 different
countries. With “Pay-It-Forward” project,
he did 250 mural paintings for schools.
Angeli Clarisse Lata
San Francisco Bay Area artist Angeli
Clarisse Lata proclaims: “People say
‘Innovation comes from necessity.’  In that
sense, creativity and innovative thinking flow
from me as an essential means to not only
express myself as I see the world but use
my individual perspective to contribute to
something greater than myself.”
Angeli presented Art and Augmented
Reality at Pistahan Innovation Pavilion in 2019
and in 2020 Art Pavilion she presents “Art and
Activism” on video followed by a slideshow.
After downloading an app from our website
and pointing your smartphone to her
drawing, you’ll surprisingly discover her art,
unveiling its inward significance.
Ramon H. Lopez, born in the
Philippines, dreamed of becoming famous.
He joined “Samahang Makasining” in the
Philippines where his discipline evolved. In
2008, he placed second in the BPRE National
Painting contest which motivated him to be
unique. He experimented with unconven-
tional elements. He discovered RUST and
mixed it with acrylic paint to produce
masterpieces with themes ranging from

Carlyle Nuera, born and raised in
California, graduated from Otis College of Art
and Design in Fashion and Product Design. Bren Bataclan Jeff Quintano
He is the lead designer for the Barbie line at
Mattel and has contributed to the ethnic
diversity portrayed in toys that empower all
children to feel seen and represented. Carlyle
has designed over a hundred Barbie dolls. To
reflect his Filipino heritage, designed the
Filipina Mutya Barbie wearing a terno with
butterfly short sleeves detailed with the sun
in the Philippine flag.
Jeff Quintano is a Philippine-born
tattoo artist who grew mindful of the need to
preserve the tradition of Philippine culture.
After receiving his BA degree in Arts from the Carlyle Nuera Ramon Lopez
University of Santo Tomas, Jeff immersed
himself in a nomadic tattooing lifestyle.  After
a decade traveling Manila, Singapore,
Malaysia, New York and California – he
distinguished himself as the modern Filipino
tribal design artist of the tattoo world.  He
now resides in Northern California, practices
his tattoo art full-time, and continues
traveling to lecture around the world.
Rosencruz Sumera, born in the
Philippines, immigrated to America in 1967,
and has been living in San Francisco for 53
years. He took Art classes from junior high
Rosencruz Sumera The Hinabi Project
school to college. Upon winning a nationwide
“Draw-me” art contest in 1971, he was
awarded a scholarship from the Art
Instruction Schools of Minneapolis,
Minnesota. Rosen has an incredible eye for
detail that is immediately conveyed upon
seeing his portraitures. He creates portraits
for clients throughout the San Francisco
Bay Area.
The Hinabi Project: The Art of
Philippine Textiles (THP) began as a pet
project of Philippine Writers and Artists, Inc. Jenifer K. Wofford Angeli Clarisse Lata
(PAWA), a 501(c)3 non-profit based in San
Francisco. As of this summer, THP has
incorporated as an independent organization Cordillera and Ilokos at the Mills Building in Hyde Street Art Wall. In this work she

Tayag. Filipino artist-chef Claude Suarez
Tayag is both an accomplished painter,
author, restauranteur and professional
chef. He shows his beautiful depiction

Philippines. He demonstrates some of
the food he prepares as customers dine
in his restaurant with his beautiful
paintings hanging on the wall to bring
serenity as groups gather to dine.

Northeast side of Luzon, Philippines –
Ginoong Cocoy Ventura discusses and
demonstrates local favorites including

o matter what generation,
Filipinos love to dance and
that’s just a fact. Dancing has
brought us together as one
community in learning about our
Philippine culture and healing through
our struggles, while adapting to
American culture in hopes of creating
memories with one another. 
As Filipino-Americans, we give
tribute to our heritage by dance through
Philippine Cultural Dancing. The
Philippines has about 12 to 15 million
indigenous people, belonging to about
10 ethnic communities that speak
around 170 different languages.  
The indigenous majority of about
60% live in Mindanao Region, where a
dance from the Maranao Indigenous
People called “Singkil” includes fans and bird’s flight.   For any dance, it takes true technique

ow do we take good
care of ourselves during
these unprecedented
times of COVID-19 global
pandemic? How do we keep ourselves
disease-free and healthy? Is there
a vaccine for purchase, like the $20
flu shot from Walgreens, to induce
immunity & prevent the disease? Are
there any therapeutic treatments
approved by the US Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) for minor and
major symptoms? The sad answer to
the last two questions is “currently
there are none” that can help us stay
COVID-19-free.
According to the Center of
Disease Control (CDC), COVID-19 is
a novel disease caused by a novel
SARS-CoV-2 virus. The virus is highly
transmittable, person to person,
where most individuals carrying
the virus will exhibit no symptoms
initially, a perfect time for spreading.
Then for some carriers, fast escalating
severe symptoms will develop within
days that will require urgent care &
hospitalization. About 1% of COVID-19
cases lead to death, with the age group
of 65 and older at the highest risk.
Data shows that 33 out of 10,000
people infected with COVID-19 end
up dying. As of the date of this writing,
US is fast approaching 150,000 deaths
with over 4,450,000 cases while the
World have over 668,500 deaths with
over 17.1 million cases. So where will
the drugs and vaccines come from?
South San Francisco, San Diego, or
Cambridge? They are three of the best
biotechnology hubs of the world.
For novel diseases with a novel
virus as a target, vaccine and drug
development typically can take up
to 20 years. All vaccine and drug
candidates go through a well-defined
multi-staged process from laboratory
to the clinic to FDA approval:1) target
discovery, 2) drug design, 3) pre-clinical
lab optimization, 4) three phases
of dose safety and efficacy human
clinical trials, and 5) the approval
process. I had the pleasure of working
in an innovative biotech startup in
the past that led the accelerated
drug development revolution and
shortened the waiting time to half
which lessened the total costs.
Alternatively, there are some drugs
that can be repurposed, like Remdesivir
originally developed for Ebola patients.
As a repurposed drug, Remdesivir
will have much shorter waiting time
budgeted for dose escalation, safety
and efficacy clinical trials for treatment

of COVID-19 patients. Lucky for us all,
Remdesivir Phase 3 clinical trials has
shown convincing safety and efficacy
data for treating hospitalized patients
with severe manifestations of COVID-19
(Gilead Press Release, April 29, 2020).
In 5 months since COVID-19 started,
Remdesivir is promising to help ease
the pressure on our health care system.
It is bringing light and hope to the
dedicated doctors and nurses whose
passion is to save lives of patients in
intensive care.
So how much longer do we have to
wait for COVID-19 vaccine and a cure?
To eradicate COVID-19 and keep
the novel coronavirus under control,
the biopharma industry together
with the US FDA, CDC, World Health
Organization (WHO), and National
Institutes of Health (NIH), are working
together to produce a safe and effective
vaccine for immunity, and therapeutic
drugs for cure less than two years from
Jan 2020. This is unheard of “pandemic
speed” and never been done before.
The quality of life of humanity depends
on the collective efforts of many
private, academic, and government
institutions. So far, there are more than
135 vaccine candidates in the pipeline
of multiple innovators in academia and
private institutions.
For now, while we are waiting for
a vaccine and a COVID-19 cure, the
best self-care to keep us disease-free
is to go back to basics: 1) wash your
hands often; 2) avoid close contact and
practice social distancing in public;
3) cover your mouth and nose with a
cloth face cover when around others;
4) cover coughs and sneezes; 5) clean
and disinfect; 6) monitor your health;
7) strengthen your immune system by
eating fruits and green leafy vegetables,
and taking multivitamins; 8) stay put
and minimize potential exposure.
Until COVIC-19 vaccine is available
worldwide, we must have “mens sana
in corpore sano” or a healthy mind in a
healthy body. Our health depends on
our choices, our routines, our actions.

Minneapolis and countless other
African- Americans spurred
different races, including Filipinx
Americans, to stand in solidarity with Black
Lives Matter, also known as the BLM
movement. BLM is a decentralized
movement here in the United States that
advocates for justice, healing, and freedom
for Black people across the globe. If you are

Mindanao) and Philippine Kuntaw
derived from the Filipino expression
“kunsagradong hataw” which
means “sacred strike” which is the
oldest form of PMA predating
Spanish colonialization. In the 1972
film Game of Death, Bruce showed
his nunchaku mastery and Dan

hat do Tuba, Tequila, and
Tiki cocktails have in
common?
Tuba, Tequilla, and Tiki
cocktails can trace their genesis from
the people of the Philippines as
declared by Randy Ramiro, President of
Infanta International Incorporated and
confirmed by our two Pistahan Tavern
guests – two-time Emmy award
winning Celebrity Makeup Artist
Gabbie Pascua and Mireya Paulos who
is a daytime show makeup artist,
creator of the viral “Bay Area Tinikling
Dance” and host of Kumu Social Media.
Indeed, Tuba, Tequilla, and Tiki cocktails
were originally created by Filipinos.
Let’s explore how they accomplished
these feats.
Philippine Coconuts for Lambanog
and Tubâ
Philippines is the world’s largest
coconut producer per year (15.3 Million
tons) placing second only to Indonesia
(18.3M tons). From coconuts, Filipinos
make Philippine liquor called
lambanóg (coconut vodka from Luzon)
and tubâ (coconut wine or Bahalina
from Visayas). Lambanog is made from
coconut or nipa palm sap derived from
tuba (palm toddy) that has been aged
for at least 48 hours. It is nicknamed
“coconut vodka” for its clear to milky
white color and high alcohol content of
80 to 90 proof (40 to 45% abv or
alcohol per volume) after a single
distillation. After the second
distillation, lambanog may go as high
as 166 proof (83% abv). Its smoothness
is comparable to Japanese sake and
European schnapps.
Manila-Acapulco Trade and Tequila
Manila-Acapulco Galleon trade
(1565-1815) established the first link of
Asia to America with both Mexico and
Philippines as colonies of Spain. In
exchange for Silver in Acapulco, Manila
ships delivered “pearls of the orient,”
silk, coconuts, hardwood, Philippine
hemp, Manila brown envelopes and
folders, porcelains, fruits and spices.
Trans-pacific route headed 38 degrees
North through Hawaii and California to
Mexico. The trip lasted 129 days from
June 1 to October 8, 1565.

hat is the history and legacy of Filipinos in America? Representation is key when it comes to government; having people in policy making
power matters and crucial for Filipino citizens. Pistahan is a festival to celebrate the accomplishments and culture of Filipino heritage.
We are honored to speak to elected FilAm officials about celebrating our history and creating history, and we asked them what is their
message to the community during this difficult time?

This year, I want to congratulate Pistahan Parade
and Festival on 27 years of dedication to the preser-
vation of Filipino culture. Pistahan continues to be a
way for all of us to connect in celebration of our food,
our dances, and our traditions. Of course, our circum-
stances this year have forced us to shift to a virtual
format to respect public safety, but that won’t stop us
from having fun! We are resilient, we are united, and
we will persevere. Mabuhay ang Pistahan!
