1. Introduction
Section A of this specification outlines the installation procedures for the temporary
cathodic protection system for buried piping to be installed at the Reliance
Petroleum Limited, Jamnagar Export Refinery Project,

Temporary cathodic protection is required for buried piping due to:

 the corrosive environment.

 Time period between the first pipe burial and the energisation of the permanent
impressed current system. The temporary cathodic protection is designed for a
18 month life.

Specification 25194-3PS-GAW-036 (Section A) provides a detail design for the

temporary cathodic protection system. This design not only covers the temporary
anodes but also other material ( classed as early material) which are normally part of
the permanent Cathodic protection system that needs to be installed during pipe
laying so as to avoid expensive excavation at a later date.

The early material includes items such as test posts, pipe to cable connections
leading to test posts, bonding cables, permanent reference electrodes and negative
connections.

The cathodic protection installation sub-contractor will have the responsibility to

provide layout drawings showing all of the material for each area together with
responsibilities for installation supervision, testing and commissioning of the
temporary CP system.

A unit wise breakdown of material and an installation check list has been included
with this document.

2. Underground services that need protection

Items to be Protected

The underground services that would need temporary protection would in general
cover the following (all are carbon steel coated pipes);

Storm water (CS)

Oily water (OS)
Fire water (FW).
Sanitary water (SS)
Potable water (WP)
Closed drain desorbants (CD).
Closed drain aromatics (AS)
Cooling water (CW).

All buried piping shall be double coated and wrapped to provide a primary barrier
against corrosion. Details of coating systems can be found in document 25194-3PS-
GAW-008

Buried Seawater piping within the plant is assumed to be non metallic and hence no
cathodic protection needed for this service.

Buried vessels are excluded from temporary protection since these are installed
within concrete enclosures and bedded in washed and graded sand.

Appendix I to this document provides a listing (with unit numbers) of various units
within the JERP wherein the buried piping would require temporary cathodic
protection. Appendix II provides a unit wise breakdown of material while Appendix
III provides a check list for installation.

A total of 245 kms of buried piping has been estimated, ranging from 2 inch and
lower (0.75 and 1 inch) and up to 84 inches (in case of cooling tower pipe work).
(Attachment II of Specification 25194-3PS-GAW-036 (Section A) provides a unit
wise and a pipe size wise breakdown of the buried pipe work.)

3. Bill of Quantity
The estimated bill of Quantity for the temporary cathodic protection is as follows for

5. Design Notes
The permanent impressed current cathodic protection system design shall be based
upon consideration that the buried piping is classed as a “complex structure” which
by definition (BS EN 14505) is defined as a structure to be protected and one or
more foreign electrodes such as earthing cannot be electrically separated from it and
universal electrical continuity will have to be considered while designing the
cathodic protection system and current drains to be suitably accounted for.
However, the design of the temporary cathodic protection system is based upon
achieving isolation of the pipework from all earthing and foreign electrodes. It is
preferable to not connect the pipework at above ground/underground interfaces in
the event there is no isolation at these interfaces. Besides, the following additional
considerations will assist in reduction of extraneous current drains.
(a) Isolation of puddle flanges within catch basins (isolation of rebars from
puddle flange as well as coating of the flange within concrete) to be
considered as these constitute a large current drain and would be beneficial
for the temporary cathodic protection system on the storm water drain
pipework.

(b) Incorporation of 50 x 50 mm welded connection with M10 hole, on all pipes

entering/exiting catch basins as these would facilitate connection of
continuity jumper cables

(c) Isolation of oily water pipework(OWS) from drain funnels , as these again
constitute a large current drain and would be beneficial for the temporary
cathodic protection system

(d) Isolation of OWS pipe work from rebars in manholes

(e) Incorporation of 50 x50 mm welded connection with M10 hole on the

isolated side of pipe at above ground/underground interface (lug on the
isolated section). These may be used as negative connection points for the CP
system.

25194-3GS-GAW-002 Rev 1 Page 8 of 32

Reliance Petroleum Limited
Jamnagar Export Refinery Project

(f) Incorporation of 50 x 50 mm welded connection with M10 hole on either side

of pipe to provide continuity across rubber lined valves located in pits

(g)A review of the ISBL piping layout shows that the storm water pipes are
located in the centre of each plot/unit compared to the other pipe work that may
be located in the periphery and it may be difficult to protect the storm water
pipes in its entirety using a distributed system of anodes. Sections of the storm
water pipe work that is remote from the periphery may be left unprotected. This
will be addressed in detail in the Section covering permanent design of the
buried piping.

Other Considerations

The temporary system is based upon the following considerations:

(a) Temporary system also includes reference electrodes, test posts and cable
connections that will be installed with pipe burial to avoid re-excavation.
(b) All magnesium anodes will be connected through test posts using a link ,
which can be disconnected upon energisation of the permanent system
(c) Test posts will be Big Fink type or equivalent, installed at suitable
intervals. There will be two types of Test posts considered – one free
standing using a hot dipped galvanized pipe and the other type equipped
with flange connector which may be anchored to pipe rack columns
(d) Each pipe , if located in a corridor of parallel pipework will have a
common test post
(e) Each pipe will have a dedicated potential monitoring cable ( 6mm 2)
connected to a dedicated terminal in the test post and likewise thermit
welded to the pipe. Parallel pipes will have their monitoring cables
leading to the same test post.
(f) In case of fire water lines, the hydrant may be used for potential
monitoring, in which case a dedicated test post may not be required. A
temporary magnesium anode may be connected on a hydrant using
thermit welding if the layout so demands.
(g) Permanent reference electrodes may be suitably installed connected to
the test post. These will be Ag/AgCl type, non-packaged, chosen on
basis of high chloride content in the native soil.
(h) Bonding between pipework may be achieved using a negative test box at
regular intervals. This bond box/negative box will also serve as
additional drain point connections. The bondbox may be installed at the
time of installation of temporary cathodic protection. , however if this is
not possible support frame /pipe can be installed for cable termination.
The test post may be used as a bonding connection point, if the situation
so demands.
(i) Bonding between pipes will be done via the bond box using a 16 mm 2
cable, thermit welded or pin brazed to the pipe, bonded via the busbar
inside the box.

25194-3GS-GAW-002 Rev 1 Page 9 of 32

Reliance Petroleum Limited
Jamnagar Export Refinery Project
(j) Pipe to soil potential measurement in paved areas adjacent to hydrants,
test posts and at above ground /underground interfaces and including
locations where permanent reference electrodes are installed shall be
provided through portable reference cell placed on soil pits (reference
electrode pits). Test points shall be minimum 0.75 meter deep and 89
mm dia PVC pipe to extend below the concrete cover to reach the soil
and shall be used and filled with natural soil. These pits shall be flush
with the paving.

6. Installation Guidelines
The following installation guide lines may be adopted for installation of all materials
that constitute the temporary cathodic protection system (Refer Appendix II of this
document):
1) From the above, the following inference can be made on anode
installation

a) Pipes 1 inch and below (if not in common trench) – 1 anode

every 1000 m

b) Pipes from 2 inch and up to 6 inch (if not in common trench) –

1 anode every 500 m

c) Pipes from 8 inch to 20 inch – 1 anode every 200 m (no separate

anodes for pipes 4 inch and below if laid in same trench)

d) Pipes from 24 inch to 42 inch – 1 anode every 100 m (no

separate anodes for pipes 4 inch and below if laid in same
trench)

e) Pipes from 48 inch and greater – 2 anodes every 100 m ( one on

either side of the pipe- no separate anodes for pipes 4 inch and
below if laid in same trench )

2) Test posts to be installed, generally one every 100 metres of pipetrench,

also ensuring that there is one test post at or near every above
ground/underground interface. An estimated 1500 test posts have been
considered, 500 out of which will be anchored to columns using flange
adaptors. Hydrants will be used as test posts

3) Soil pits for measurement in paved areas could be located one per test
post as well as at every hydrant location and if possible inside every valve
pit as well as at every above ground/underground interface. An estimated
1500 soil pits have been considered.

4) Permanent reference electrodes, one to be installed every 400 metres,

connected to the test posts, a total of 450 electrodes have been considered.

5) As seen from the breakdown of piping, an estimated 30 groups of units

within JERP require cathodic protection of buried piping. It is assumed
that each unit will have 10 negative connections, out of which 5 negative

25194-3GS-GAW-002 Rev 1 Page 10 of 32

Reliance Petroleum Limited
Jamnagar Export Refinery Project
connections can be via above ground welded connection attached to the
pipe.

6) The remaining 150 connections will be belowground to the pipe using

thermit welds and 16 mm2 cable, serving as negative and/or bond
connections .It is preferable to connect these cables using separate bond
boxes / negative splitter boxes .The bond/negative boxes could be part of
the permanent CP system, but cable connections may have to be carried
out along with the temporary cathodic protection, with cables leading to a
support frame, which can be installed with the temporary CP system.
Bonding my also be carried out at test posts if the situation so demands.
However, as a rule, the potential monitoring cable should never be used as
a bonding cable.

7. Typical Installation Drawings

Following typical drawings have been provided which should assist in installation
work.
1) Typical test post and magnesium anode installation
2) Cable connections on pipe
3) Permanent reference electrode connections/installation
4) Negative / bonding connections on pipe
5) Cross over from temporary system to permanent system
6) Hydrant detail
7) Soil pits detail (for paved areas)
8) Typical bond/negative box detail

The following sketches will also be provided to assist installation

1) Isolation of puddle flanges within catch basins
2) Isolation of oily water pipework(OWS) from drain funnels
3) Incorporation of 50 x50 mm lugs with M10 hole on the isolated side of
pipe
4) Incorporation of 50 x 50 mm lugs ( steel plate ) with M10 hole on either
side of pipe to provide continuity across rubberlined valves
