OBJECTIVES:
• Making student learn the art of collecting data and to carry out analysis for the process of
evolving design and individuality of approach.
• Understanding site planning: organization, scale, hierarchy, orientation and climate.
• Understanding complex services in multi-storied buildings; understanding the architectural
content of services in buildings.
• Implication of knowledge of design fundamentals and knowledge gained in other subjects
to develop better design solutions.
• Developing appropriate graphic skills and presentation techniques (models, rendering) to explain
the contents of a design.

CONTENTS:
Unit I 63 Hrs
Residential:
Residential buildings for defined clients and requirements framed for specific plot/ land in urban context.
Suggested studio exercise: Detached and semi-detached houses, terraced housing, Group housing,
Housing for specific socio-economic groups, Apartments etc.

Unit II 69 Hrs
Non-Residential:
Designing for unidentified users- the buildings other than residential uses e.g., middle order educational
buildings, commercial and health-care facilities etc. Suggested studio exercise: Neighborhood shopping
centers, commercial banks, polyclinics/ diagnostic centres, Senior Secondary School etc.

Unit III 72 Hrs


High Rise buildings and interiors:
5-star Hotels, Malls, Multiplexes, multi-storied Office Building etc.

Units IV 60 Hrs
Industrial & Transportations Buildings:
Factories, Milk Plants, Power stations, Transport terminals etc.

Units V 60 Hrs
Designing for Earthquakes & Barrier Free Environment:
The Design exercise of multi-storied buildings to cater to parameters required for Seismic Zone V &
barrier free environment.

Time Problem is also recommended for students to get equipped with time constraint projects.
All buildings should have accessibility to the physically challenged persons.

METHODOLOGY:
• The methodology for a design should include: Data collection and its analysis, impact of Climatic
conditions and socio-economic factors, formulation of user requirements, philosophy based

concept development and final design (Plans, elevations, Sections, views, 3Dimensional physical
model, perspectives etc).
• Library study is necessary to understand the basic functions of building, codes, byelaws, norms,
standards, anthropometric etc.
• Prototype case-studies may be done in groups of 2-5 students.
• Design submission should also integrate knowledge of anthropometrics and standards.
• Regular assessment shall be done through internal/ external Juries.
• For better supervision and guidance all students are to be equally evaluated by all the concerned
design teachers and the teachers should properly maintain students teacher ratio during studio
hours. Moreover, students can be equally distributed among allotted design teachers for
extra guidance and could be rotated accordingly for the succeeding design projects.
• It is mandatory that at the end of studio hours class work assessment should be done and
recorded on students sheet.
• For better understanding and to enhance visual perception of the student city tours shall be
scheduled on regular basis. Moreover for exposure to various forms and style prevalent in
architecture in our country, educational tour should be scheduled. The report to be submitted by
the student shall be assessed as part of the studio work of Architectural Design.
• For annual subjects, the sessional marks will be finalized by adding both semesters marks.
• Mode of submission can be manual or Digital.

CONDUCT OF EXAMINATION:
Theory:
There will be a theory examination in Architectural Design of 100 marks. The topic of design shall be
declared one week in advance of the examination date. The duration of the Design theory examination is
18 hours. The examination is conducted over two days with a session of 6 hours per day (Two shifts of

three hours each per day). At the end of 1 day, the students shall submit their 1 day sketch which will
be submitted with the final submission; however the students may make a duplicate of the submission

made on the 1 day for reference or if they desire, may start the final work on the first day itself. A

maximum of 30 marks shall be for the sketch submitted on the 1 day. Announcement of the design
topic to the students for examination shall be made 10 days in advance.
For the Design theory examination, the examiners are required to prescribe any special stationery to be
issued to the students for the examination of this subject besides cartridge, graph sheet and tracing
paper.
Viva-voce:
The viva-voce examination of 100 marks shall relate to the work done in the design studio and the topics
listed in the syllabus.
The viva-voce examination shall be conducted by two examiners: one external and one internal.

SUGGESTED EXAMINATION PATTERN:
Q 1: One compulsory question of design proposal is to be set from the entire syllabus. The breakup of
marks shall be as follows:
• Concept and Philosophy = 15 marks
• All building plans including site plan = 40 marks
• Elevations (preferably two) = 15 marks
• Sections = 15 marks
• Supporting views and sketches = 15 marks
TOTAL = 100 marks

NOTE: Question paper should clearly define design proposal and provide site details and user
requirements.

OBJECTIVE:
• To develop understanding about construction principles.
• The subjects should also focus on developing design abilities by applying basic principles of
construction and choosing appropriate materials and techniques.
• Construction technology and appropriate materials for structural systems, roofing, enveloping and
interior finishes shall be considered under this subject from simple examples to complex.
• To introduce and familiarize the students with the basics of seismic design and construction
methods.
• To understand the use of temporary construction on the site and to generate awareness about
new materials and methods of construction being employed in construction industry.
• To understand design limitations due to authority guidelines and making drawings/ details
necessary for final execution of a project.

Temporary Construction: Centering, shuttering and scaffolding; hutments for construction labour
Staircases (R.C.C., stone and metal): Terminology, R.C.C stairs and details of reinforcement, Stone
stairs and Joint details, Mild steel and cast iron staircases
D.P.C. (Vertical): Basement and treatment of expansion joints

Unit II 42 Hrs
Prefabrication: Open prefab system, large panel prefab system, joints, pre-casting methods, materials,
on-site and off-site prefabrication, components, etc.
Pre-stressed Concrete: Introduction, methods of pre-stressing and their application to large-space
structures
Industrial Construction: Structural steel works: portal frame, north-light truss and lattice girder roof with
various roof coverings.

Unit III 46 Hrs


Curtain Walls, Doors and Windows: Curtain walls in glass, aluminium, precast concrete units etc. for
buildings like laboratories, offices, cinemas etc., PVC doors and windows
Special Construction:
Methods, types of floor construction: Beam & slab, waffle grid slab, drop beam and slab, flush slab
and lift slab construction, Cast-in-situ service and stair cores, 5Cross wall and box frame construction.
Sound Proof Construction: Sound proof partitions and doors for recording studios, Cinemas,
broadcasting studios etc.

Unit IV 50 Hrs
Working Drawings:
Making complete set of working drawings and details for the residence presented earlier or any other
small project designed earlier. The drawings also to incorporate electrical and plumbing details complete
with schedule and all specifications.
The Working Drawings and details to include: Site plan; foundation layout with details of foundations;
ground floor plan; first floor plan; terrace plan; sections; elevations; door and window schedule; door and
window details; electrical layout; plumbing layout; toilet details complete with all fixtures and
specifications; kitchen details complete with all fixtures and specifications; flooring pattern; staircase
details including railings; details of grills, parapet and/or railings; typical wall section showing foundation,
D.P.C., skirting, sill, lintel, slab and terracing details.

Unit V 36 Hrs
Designing for Earthquakes:
Building earthquake resistant buildings: Characteristics as regards size of buildings, horizontal and
vertical layout of buildings, adjacency of buildings,
Ductility for good seismic performance: type of materials, elementary design concept, flexibility,
working drawings to cater to details required for earthquake resistant building in Seismic Zone V

METHODOLOGY:
• For better grasp of the subject, the students shall do major amount of work in the studio.
• It is mandatory that at the end of studio hours class work assessment should be done and
recorded on students sheet.
• Site visits and related assignments are mandatory in each unit as desired by the course content.
• The emphasis should be on construction details as applicable to Indian conditions.
• It is recommended that student should prepare working drawing of at least one design
project along with implication of Earthquake design parameters.
• Course should be covered through lectures and digital presentations.
• For annual subjects, the sessional marks will be finalized by adding both semesters marks.
• Market surveys and sampling is essential so as to acquaint students with the latest
construction technology & materials.

CONDUCT OF EXAMINATION:
Theory:
There will be a theory examination of 3 hours duration of 100 marks.
Viva-voce:
The viva voce examination of 50 marks shall relate to the work done in the studio and the topics listed in
the syllabus.
The viva-voce examination shall be conducted by two examiners: one external and one internal.

colouring; Preparation & Signing of plans; Fees, Duration of sanction; Deviations, Violations and
Penalties, Completion Certificate, Qualifications and Competence of professionals, Introduction to
compounding.
An exercise in terms of preparation of complete set of Submission (Municipal) drawings for a small
project.

Storage Stacking & handling of materials, Safety in construction of elements of building – Temporary
constructions, foundations, Walling, roofing, finishes, electrical installations and lifts: safety in Demolition
of Buildings – Sequence of demolition operations, precautions prior and during demolition, mechanical
demolition, Lowering, removal & disposal of materials.
Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act -1958,
Defining ancient & protected monuments and areas, Rules regarding construction and other operations in
protected/ regulated Areas.

Unit V 24 Hrs
Uttar Pradesh Apartment (Promotion of Construction, ownership & maintenance) Act 2010, U. P.
Urban Planning and Development Act 1973 and U. P. Housing & Urban Development Act 1965.
Duties and liabilities of Promoters, Rights and obligations of Apartment Owners; Ownership, Heritability
and Transferability of Apartments, Declaration of Building and deed of apartment, Association of
apartment Owners. An exercise in terms of preparation of complete set of Submission (Municipal)
drawings for a small project.
Study of different codes.
Detailed study of National Building Code, The Environment (Protection) Act -1986 and The Disaster
Management Act – 2005, The Energy Conservation Building Code of India- 2006

METHODOLOGY:
• Visit to a Plan Sanctioning Authority is mandatory for interaction and first-hand information
regarding plan approval process.
• Development of design by keeping in mind design limitations due to authority’s guidelines
and making drawings/ details for the same.
• The lectures and seminars by the experts in the field should be arranged for greater exposure to
practical field.
• It is recommended that at least one design project should be analyzed according to
building bye laws and codes of practices and implication of same should be done in the
design proposal along with submission of project report.
• For annual subjects, the sessional marks will be finalized by adding both semesters marks.

• The lectures and tutorials will be arranged for the students so as to give them exposure to the
practical aspects of design.
• For better understanding of the subject site visits of ongoing projects (in and off campus) shall be
scheduled on regular basis.
• Structural Design and System work shall be conducted as a part of Architectural Design Studio.

OBJECTIVES:
• To initiate the students into theory and practice of estimating and quantity surveying.
• To inculcate awareness regarding factors effecting cost of buildings.
• To familiarize the student with the commonly used methods of preparing estimates of
Architectural Projects.
• To acquaint students with methodology of writing specifications with reference to building trades,
materials, workmanship and performance of different items of work and introducing the students
to specifications as an integral part of contract document for building projects.

CONTENTS:
Unit I 09 Hrs
Estimating and its various methods
Definition, Aim and object, Scope and importance of subject, types of estimates - approximate and
detailed. Methods for estimation viz-a-viz Plinth area method, carpet/floor area method, cubic content
method, approximate quantity method and number system.

Unit II 12 Hrs
Detailed estimates
Procedure of estimating: Calculation of quantities, schedule of rates. Exercises of estimating (with
different methods) of small buildings including interior schemes, plumbing work and electrical installations
etc.
Rate analysis: Principles of analysis of rates, rates of labour and materials, exercises in rate analysis of
different building works, e.g. earthwork for foundations, flooring, timber work etc.
Costing: Final costing exercise to be carried out where students can undertake the costing of their studio
design project.

Unit III 12 Hrs


Specification - Introduction:
Definition, importance and scope of the subject. Correct form of specification writing – avoiding ambiguity
and conflicting statements. Form and sequence of clauses, study and use of standard specification vis-à-
vis drafted by C.P.W.D., etc.

Unit IV 12 Hrs
Specification Writing of Materials & sub-structure Work:
Detailed specification writing of various building materials, e.g. bricks, sand, lime, glass, paints, metals,
timber and its products, which includes about selection of materials with their trade names,
manufacturer’s specifications of allied products such as block board, plywood, soft board, aluminum, steel
etc. Identifying a section by their weight, gauge etc.
Sub-Structure Work: Water Proofing: In toilets, kitchen, terraces, water tanks etc.

Unit V 09 Hrs

Specifications of Items of work for super structure:
Superstructure in cement mortar, plastering and painting, flooring, whitewashing, distempering and
painting, cement paint, stone masonry, mud phuska, terracing and others. Specifications for concrete
work including mixing, transportation, placing and curing of concrete, scaffolding required for R.C.C.
works.

METHODOLOGY:

practical field.

OBJECTIVES:
• To initiate students into theory and practice of acoustics.
• Applying in architectural design and preparing layout and details.

CONTENTS:
Unit I 09 Hrs
Introduction & terminology:
Properties of audible sound, intensity & loudness, frequency & pitch, quality.

Unit II 09 Hrs
Behaviour of audible sound and common acoustical defects:
Reflection of sound, absorption, transmission.
Echo, sound foci, dead spots, sound shadows, resonance, insufficient loudness, external noise.

Unit III 12 Hrs


Noise control:
Indoor noise, planning against indoor noise, outdoor noise, planning against outdoor noise (traffic &
buildings in built – up area)

Unit IV 12 Hrs
Constructional measures for sound insulation of buildings:
Materials, hollow & composite wall construction, flooring & ceiling.

Unit V 12 Hrs
Sound system and Acoustic design exercise:
Sound reinforcement system, public address system, sound system equipment specification.
Auditorium, conference rooms.

METHODOLOGY:
• The lectures and seminars by the experts in the field should be arranged for greater exposure to
practical field.
• Assignments shall be done in the form of exercises based on analysis, calculation and
consequently preparation of services layout for buildings.
• It is recommended that at least one design project should be analyzed according to mechanical
services and implication of same should be done in the design proposal along with submission of
project report.

CONDUCT OF EXAMINATION:
Theory:
There will be a theory examination of 3 hours duration of 50 marks.
