The importance of drama in learning English

There are many ways of learning English. One of the ways is through drama. Why drama?
The first one is because drama is seen as one of the very useful activity to be done by the
students. This concept is strengthen by Mattevi (2005) through the statement "the use of
drama in the language classroom allows the teacher to present the target language in an
active, communicative and contextualized way. Dramatization helps the teacher address the
four skills of language learning (speaking, listening, writing and reading), and it also favors
and facilitates the study of some often neglected aspects of language such as pronunciation
and body language." Hence, learning English through drama could help students to perform
the four language skills as well as pronounciation and body movement simultaneously.

The second one is that drama helps students on developing critical thinking. Özdemir and
Çakmak (2008) declare that drama is beneficial to develop intellectual skills for example
creativity , problem solving, communication, socialization and empathy. Creativity is
extremly needed in drama to acting out naturally and in order for the story to be well-
communicated to the audiences. Moreover, this is due to a reason that usually in drama
students commonly work in a team in which it requires them not to be selfish and to control
their attitude towards others. Those things are really help to build character building.

Additionally, drama is a fun activity but the seriousness also included there. Many people
might wonder how does drama can be beneficial in learning English? Heikkinen (2005, p. 34)
argues that there is seriousness involved inside the act of playing. Surely, if the players do not
take their actions seriously, it is not played indeed. So, the students have to learn how to build
serious atmosphere not in the same way as they have in common.
All in all, drama has in important role in learning English that it allows students to practice
the language skills itself. The aspects of creativity and humanity are also built to have a good
deal with others. Then it is also brings students into the new learning dimension.
