1
Vessel’s grounding & cargo shifting – Ferry / Ro-Ro vessel “AMADEO 1”

2
1) Vessel’s name, type, size, cargo transported:
“AMADEO 1” / Ro-Ro ferry, transporting HAZMAT, trucks, containers, trailers, cars / vehicles.

3
2) Vessel’s characteristics and particulars:
LBP= 126 x 20m, 6,000 mt lightship. Photos and 2 videos available (graphic and real ones).

4
3) Type of accident / incident and date:
Vessel hit a rock, it breached cargo holds & master intentionally ran her aground at “Kirke” Canal, Chile.
Vessel partly submerged with list 70 degrees and encountered danger of sliding in deep water. Actually,
it was an intentional grounding by Master to avoid the vessel’s sinking.

5
4) Accident location, country, closest city/ port:
Grounding in way of very southern tip of Chile –
near entrance of “Magellan straits”.
Accident place was 35 n. miles to nearest port.

6
5A) Accident / incident conditions-description:
Very south, with very low ambient temperatures.

7
5B) Accident / incident conditions-description:
First priority to establish holding back system to ensure not sliding in
very deep waters (need to secure in position - see video).

8
6) Crew injuries, cargo and vessel’s damages:
No known injuries but most cargo and residual fuels removed, but vessel became C.T.L.

9
7) Oil pollution or fire incident:
Some oil spreaded, but finally collected, no fire incident.

10
8) Available photos:
Two (2) videos, photos & complete / detailed presentation (ppt).

11
9A) Type of Resolve involvement:
It started in October 2014 to recover cargo (cars, lorries, trucks), plus to remove this wreck
and up to its scuttling-off coast of Chile, through mobilization of assets all around the world .

12
9B) Type of Resolve involvement:
Extensive hold back system, as vessel was resting on the underwater ledge –
needed to drill 28 anchor points.

13
9C) Type of Resolve involvement: Scuttling-off coast of Chile

14
9D) Type of Resolve involvement:
Finally, it sunk at a distance of 70 km from Chile at sea-depth of 2,700 m.

15
10A) Conclusions as to be made:
• Remoteness of location meant limited available resources, so coordinating logistics
proved crucial aspect of operation.
• Working 4 months in freezing conditions (out of 9 months of project duration).

16
10B) Conclusions as to be made:
Par-buckle and refloat vessel and removal of HAZMAT.

17
10C) Conclusions as to be made:
Experiences collected from “RENA” / New Zealand, helped experts of
Resolve to comply with Chile strict environmental rules.

18
10D) Conclusions as to be made:
Sub-polar climate (no dry season) / average temperature -3 up to 3°C.

19
10E) Conclusions as to be made:
• Redundancy of equipment / spares to avoid delays.
• Accommodation of workers was provided on barges.
