 CORONA DISCHARGE
Corona discharge occurs when the air around a charged conductor get ionized.
Occurance of corona discharge is mostly due to the high voltage in power
system.Ionization of air produce hissing noise and violet glow moreover Power loss,
production of ozone and interference occurs .Alternating potential, Atmospheric
conditions and spacing between conductor are the factors responsible to produce
corona discharge.
TYPES
There are following three types of corona discharge
1. Streamer corona
2. Star corona
3. Leader corona

ANALYSIS:-
1.STREAMER CORONA
It is the pre-onset discharge. By increasing applied voltage cross electrodes initial
discharge occurs due to avalanche as a result of it streamer corona happens. Pre on-
set discharge is shown below in figure .Streamer corona happens in short gaps at
high voltage. Formation of various streamer depends upon the applied voltage and
shape of electrodes. By keeping voltage maintained electric arc can also be sustained
as shown in figure.

2.STAR CORONA

Star or glow corona occurs when the applied voltage(dc voltage) is changing slowly
and electrodes having short gap. Slow change in voltage transit the streamer corona
into glow corona as shown below. When applied voltage is not sufficient to cause a
streamer breakdown or a leader breakdown in the gap, glow corona discharges are
restricted around the surface of the electrodes and are uniformly distributed.

3.LEADER CORONA
Leader discharge occurs when the electrode gap is about >1m and contraction of
streamer corona happen into particular stems. Leader corona can be incepted when
the temperature of streamer approaches to 2000k.Streamer zone and leader channel
is shown in above figure. leader discharges are important in long gap. After reaching
at opposite electrode streamer causes breakdown known as leader breakdown. Due
to the maintained applied voltage electric arc can be formed. Glow corona and
streamer corona are called non thermal due to low temperature while leader and arc
are called thermal plasma because of high temperature.
