1. On blank cards for inkjet printers designed for this purpose. These cards are available at
low cost at www.pearl.de, order number VM-6361-909. Please click here for a direct link
to order these cards. To print on these cards, please use the templates without visible
grid lines.

 Nouns with special endings
You learned from the workbook, starting at page 17, that some nouns have special endings that
enable you to deduce the correct definite article. Among experts, these endings are called
"gender-specific endings".
To help you remember these endings, we have arranged them into so-called "quasi-words“.
This allows us to pronounce the endings as though they were one single word, and makes them
easier for us to remember. In addition, we have associated each quasi-word with a picture, in
order to make the whole thing more vividly descriptive. To refresh your memory, we'll list the
three quasi-words and their corresponding images again:

Nouns with these endings -ig, -ling, -or, (i)smus

are always masculine (der)
For example:
der König, der Monitor

Der Iglingorismus

Nouns with these endings -heit, -ung, -keit, -ei, -schaft, -

ion, -(i)tät, -ik
are always feminine (die)
For example:
die Zeitung, die Freundschaft

Die Heitungkeiteischaftionitätik

Nouns with these endings -tum, -chen, -ma, -ment, -um,

-lein
are always neuter (das)
For example:
das Eigentum,

You will find lots of nouns with special endings, and their matching cards with the symbols for
the corresponding quasi-words, on the memory cards. If you turn over a noun card and its
matching quasi-word symbol card, then you get to keep these two cards.

There are two different levels of difficulty:

Level 1 - the symbol cards are not labelled

In this level, it is sufficient to turn over a card that has a symbol which matches your noun card.
You must, however, know which symbol you need.
Thus, the following two cards match:

Level 2 - the symbol cards are labelled with one ending each
Here, you must find the card with the exactly matching special ending for each noun.
Thus, the following two cards match:
