1. Woods can be classified into two varieties namely harwood and softwood.

Softwood comes
from tress which grows fast and straight.
Species like cedar wood are used for making furnitures. It is mosly used for otudoord furnitures,
decks, and building exteriors because it is resistant to weather conditions
Hardwoods are denser. For this reason, they are used for flooring, construction, decks and high
quality furniture.
Softwoods aren’t always dense. For instance, softwood is used for framing lumber, such as
studes, joints and beams . It is also used for trim and finish components . used in many more
applications than hardwoods because it is less expensive, fairly abundant, weighs less.
Hardwoods price and availability. Costly option for prices. Slower growth rate. They are more
fire resistance. Has higher density than softwood
2. Wood defects- the nature, size and location of defects affect the strength of wood. They affect
the finished appearance of the member. Seasoning defects result from the effect of uneven and
unequal shrinkage.
Moisture content- the strength of wood is greatly influenced by its moisture content. As the
moisture content increases up, the wood strength decreases, and as the moisture content
decreases, the wood strength increases.
Slope of wood grain- the strength of wood depends on the dircetion of the stress applied. Thus
wood is trongest when the load applied si parallel to the grain direction.
Density- the density of wood is the most important wood quality. High density woods is usually
associated with high lumber strengths abd stiffness.
