Ozymandias
Percy Bysshe Shelley

I met a traveller from an antique land

Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert… Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on those lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
“My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!”
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Explanation: Ozymandias is a greek name of the Egyptian pharaoh Ramesses II. He ruled the
Egyptian New Kingdom for sixty-six years. His reign began in 1279 BC and lasted until his death in
the summer of 1213 BC. Because of his remarkably long, prosperous rule, Ramesses II had the
option to manufactured huge amounts of goliath structures to laud himself and his domain. Many
epic sculptures of him have endure. Ramesses II's most celebrated development venture today,
however, is the Great Temple of Abu Simbel, which was worked compelled between c. 1264 BC and
c. 1244 BC. Four situated titanic sculptures of Ramesses II remain outside the sanctuary. Percy
Bysshe Shelley, a famous english poet, was born in 1793 at Horsham, England. His influences
includes William Wordsworth, typically, Shelly's works reflects his life circumstances, friends, and
political beliefs. The poem was actually written in 1817 wherein it is a phase of England's darkness.
After the long wars in Napoleon's France, England was left with victory but badly in debt. It resulted
to scarce in work and exorbitant price on food. Even the habeas corpus was suspended. In relation
to the sonnet of Ozymandias, it provide a clear picture of a temporary power, whereby, the
powerful will be powerless and its subject will suffer. The sculptor of the statue possesses an
intelligence with the emphasis on Ozymandias' wrinkled lip and sneering look clearly portraying the
absolute ruler's way looking down to his subject with a cold heart and vanity. On the pedestal of the
statue's words, “My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye mighty, and
despair!” illustrates his tyranny. The ancient king oppression to his subject especially the poor class
(slaves) and his ruthless ruling that envokes the subjects' rights according to his desire. The statue
once marked a power and control is now unrecognizable and deemed to be seen by chance.
Symbollically represent a power of man which believed to be permanent will fade its cogency over
time.
