Увод
Робови су чинили неизоставни део античког грчког друштва. Атина, као можда и
највећи грчки полис, имала је знатну популацију робова. Немогуће је тачно одредити
када су се први робови појавили у Атенином полису, али су чинили саставни део
становништва у класичном, хеленистичком и римском периоду. После Солонових
реформи, робови у Атини су по пореклу били из других грчких полиса или из
Тракије, Анадолије и Сирије.

пребројано је 400.000 робова. Ова цифра је свакако превелика, али одсликава веровање
о многобројности робова у Атини.

С друге стране, нешто је лакше одредити њихова занимања. Робови су радили као
испомоћ на имањима, радили су у кућама, радили су у занатским радионицама, а
понеки су управљали имањима или учествовали у банкарским пословима, као на

Већина атинских робова је радила у лауријским
рудницима, копајући сребро у тешким условима. Тукидид наводи да је почетком
Декелејског рата чак 20.000 робова побегло из Лауриона. Да је Лаурион остао велико

насеље робова, са лошим условима, казује чињеница да је током 130-их г.п.н.е. дошло
до велике побуне робова баш у Лауриону. Ти побуњеници су вршљали по Атици
неколико година и чак успели да заузму тврђаву Сунион.

Робовска имена се могу делити у више категорија, али две су најважније: имена
потврђена само међу робовима и имена потврђена међу грађанима. Искључиво
робовска била су имена страног порекла или која су указивала на етничко или
географско порекло: Даос, Карион, Менодор, Манес, Манија, као и имена која су се
односила на неку особину: Ксантија (плавокос), Пирија (црвенокос), што је опет
указивало на потенцијално порекло (Тракија).

Композитна, теофорна или имена дата
по некој животињи посведочена су међу робовима и међу грађанима: Артемидор,
Хераклид, Антиген...

Посебан случај биле су проститутке, од којих су већина биле
робиње. Оне су носиле имена која су указивала на њихово занимање и која је требало
да привуку муштерије попут Гликера (Слатка) или Малтаке (Мекана). Најпознатија је
бивша робиња Неаира, предмет једне Демостенове беседе.

Извори
Готово сви извори који доносе имена робова су из класичног периода и баве се
класичним периодом. Ниједан сачувани наративни извор није се бавио самим робовима,
али су они "разбацани" кроз многа дела.

Међутим, нису сва дела подједнако
поуздана. Наиме, неретко робови споменути не представљају стварне личности, него
замишљене идеале. То је најбоље видљиво у Аристофановим и Менандровим
комедијама. С једне стране, та дела су вредан извор робовских имена, а са друге,

Поред тога, Аристофан и Менандар су приликом именовања својих робова рачунали на
стереотипе својих суграђана, те су давали имена за које се очекивало да их носе
робови и која су у атинском друштву препозната као робовска, попут Даос, Ксантија
идр.

Са њима се слаже и Страбон који каже да су Атињани робовима имена у
односу на њихово географско и етничко порекло: Даос и Гетас за Дачане и Гете,
Карион за Каријце, Лида и Лидос за Лиђане, Манес, Фрикс за Фрижане, Тибеј за
Пафлагонце.

близини Лауриона може се односити на роба, с обзиром на бројно робовско
становништво у близини тих рудника. Од помоћи је свакако ако је име и другде
посведочено код робова, попут Артемидор, Хермија, Сосија или Хераклид.

Међутим, ако се узму у обзир сви посведочени робови и
ослобођеници, онда је ситуација другачија. Већина робова/ослобођеника је носила
имена слична атинским грађанима, теофорна или композитна.

Овде треба обратити
пажњу на пар ствари: на распоред имена током година и статус. Потврђени робови су
често носили етничка или страна лична имена, док су ослобођеници носили теофорна
или композитна.

Врло је могуће да су бивши робови по свом ослобођењу бирали
нова, уобичајена имена, како би се лакше уклопили у друштво. Друга објашњења су
да су то робови рођени у оквиру робовских породица у Атини и да су добили грчка
имена, да су робови имали више слободе у одабиру личних имена него што се
мислило, да су робови на бољим положајима имали уобичајенија имена и друго.

Етничко име Асириос посвећено је на једном надгробном споменику из II/I
века п.н.е.

Слично класичном периоду, највећи број робовских имена могао се срести и код
атинских грађана. Највише посведочених личних имена у хеленистичком и римском
периоду припада теофорним личним именима. Имена датих по Дионису има 20,
углавном су облика Дионисиос и Дионисиа, уз једног Дионисогена и једног
Дионисидора.

Скоро подједнако бројна су имена дата по Деметри: Деметриос и
Деметриа. Деметриа је, уз то, једно од најчешћих женских имена које се јавља у
корпусу.

Други богови су мање заступљени међу теофорним личним именима. Аполон
и Афродита су заступљени са двоцифреним бројем, једанаест и десет имена.

појмове. Апстрактни појмови попут зопирос (сјајан), протос (први), клео (слава), логос
(разум), ирене (мир), елпис (нада), кратеиа (снага, моћ) били су такође и лична имена

робова и ослобођеника.

Под исту категорију би могла да се подведу имена која
почињу на Еу-, попут: Еубиос (добар живот), Еудаимон (добар дух), Еунус (пријатан,
љубазан), Еупорос (добро опремљен), Еубула (добар савет), Еуноја и Еупорија као
женске верзије имена Еунус и Еупорос.

Најпосле, посведочена су имена дата по извесним животињама. Лично име Мис (миш)
посведочено је три пута, исто колико и име Мелита, док су Таурискос и Таурокос,
имена дата по бику, посведочена по једанпут.

Закључак

још већи број њих се својим именима није разликовао од атинских грађана. Једну
важну чињеницу треба имати на уму: слободни Атињани су својим робовима давали
нова имена, док су ослобођеници имали слободу да сами бирају своја имена. Постоји
могућност да су ослобођеници узимали имена популарна међу Атињанима како би се
боље уклопили у друштво.
