PS Instructor Mr. Santosh S. Khandgave

Week: 26th July to 3rd August

Plan for the Week:
1. Going through various study material provided by sir (scientist in charge) to build a background
for the project.

2. Completed the lecture series on packed bed NPTEL (referred by sir) and made notes.

3. Completed 2 research papers out of 4 given by sir to study.

Learning Outcomes of the Week

About the PS 1 Station
1. The Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP) was established in 1960 and is one of the laboratories
of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

2. It is dedicated to R&D in the hydrocarbon sector. Almost every refinery in the country has
technologies licensed by the institute.
3. Development of processes for petroleum refining/petro chemicals/petroleum products, evaluation
of crudes and petroleum products, conducting techno-economic feasibility studies and market
demand surveys of petroleum products, training personnel of oil/petrochemical industry are
some works among the many taken up by this institute.
About the Project Domain
My project is “designing a trickle bed reactor”. Trickle bed reactor (TBR) is the most prevalent fixed bed
reactor in industrial applications like petrochemical and chemical industries, waste treatment,
biochemical and electrochemical processes.

Major Learning & Project Milestones

Understanding of flow regimes of TBR
In a trickle bed reactor, the liquid and gas phases flow co currently downwards through a fixed bed
of catalyst particles while the reaction takes place. Trickle bed reactors operate in a variety of flow
regimes ranging from gas continuous to liquid continuous patterns.
low interaction regime- trickle flow regime - occurs at low liquid and gas flow rates- partial wetting
regime & complete wetting trickling regime exists
high interaction regime - pulse, spray, bubble and dispersed bubble flow regimes- relatively high
gas and liquid input flow rates

Intrinsic kinetics and diffusion studies of Jatropha oil as oxygenated renewable fuel over Ni-
W/SiO2-Al2O3 catalyst in a fixed bed reactor
Oxygen content is undesirable for hydrocarbon-based transportation fuels.
Unwanted waxy oxygenated products forms during hydro treatment of oxygenated feeds
They choke and deactivate the catalyst.
Effective diffusivity depends on Knudsen and bulk diffusivity.

Work Plan for Next Week
