According to the article written by Robert M.

Goldman, in the near future, computers

will be smarter than humans. It is not a surprise given the fast rate of technological
advancement nowadays. Of course, it would be good for us humans since there are a lot of
benefits that comes with it that would make life a lot easier. However, the same cannot be
said for traditional industries that are operating and are successful today. As mentioned in
the article, software will drastically affect traditional industries in the future. Businesses that
are successful now might not be profitable in the so called Exponential Age. Because
technology can do work a lot more efficiently and accurately than humans, it would be
completely integrated into future businesses to the point that human labor won’t be
necessary in business operations. The article predicted that 70-80% of jobs will disappear in
the next 20 years. One branch of business that would drastically be affected by this is
human resource management. The reason to this is that human labor won’t be used as
much as it used to in the past. Some jobs would be in demand like those specializing in
computers like programmers and web developers, however, a lot of jobs would be affected
by software taking over. Human resource managers would be hiring fewer employees and
thus would be more critical in analyzing applicants. The ones that would be chosen and
accepted into the organization are only the best of the best. When it comes to managing and
training the employees, human resource managers would stricter than ever. The article
mentioned something about a medical device that might be invented in the future that can
detect a person’s sickness just by taking some samples from the person. If that were to be
invented, then a trip to the hospital won’t be needed if ever a person suspects an illness and
needs a check-up. The information needed will be generated instantly and won’t be
expensive. If this would be the case in the future, then there would be a significant decrease
in the profits of hospitals. Also, fewer nurses and doctors would be hired by human
resources. It’s the same with the rise of 3D Printing. Consumers would be able to 3D print
what they would normally buy stores like shoes, clothing, even buildings can be 3D printed.
A huge amount of human labor used to be needed to be able to produce these things. The
rise of the exponential age, even when beneficial, can also be scary especially for us who
are just about to enter the industry. It is uncertain whether we’ll be successful in our chosen
careers. It would be wise for young people today to really think about what careers would still
be needed in the future.
