Let’s Talk...Chemical Attack Safety
During these justified protests against continued police violence in Black communities, we are
seeing the spread of misleading advice relating to what to do during a Chemical Attack (ie
pepper spray and tear gas). This zine will provide information to better navigate and protect folx
after being exposed to Chemical attacks. Pepper spray and Tear gas are lachrymatory agents
which are chemical compounds that irritate the eyes, to cause a burning sensation, pain, and
temporary blindness.

So what is a Chemical Attack?

Chemical attacks vary, and KKKops often use pepper spray or tear gas to cause the most
damage. This zine will cover both pepper spray and tear gas.

First, yall need to know what each is...

Mace, pepper spray, and tear gas are DIFFERENT chemical warfare products:
- Mace is the brand name of phenacyl chloride (CN) tear gas, dissolved in hydrocarbon solvents
and packaged into a small aerosol spray can.
-Pepper Spray is an inflammatory agent with the active ingredient capsaicin, which is a chemical
derived from the fruit of plants including chilis; It should be treated as an OIL based product.
- Tear Gas defining component is a compound 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile, a cyanocarbon,
commonly referred to as C S gas. T
ear gas is not actually a gas, it is a fine POWDER.

KKKOPS WILL USE PEPPER SPRAY AND TEAR GAS AS “RIOT CONTROL”.

PEPPER SPRAY
Pepper Spray is Oleoresin Capsicum (O.C.) The active ingredient in pepper spray is capsaicin,
which is a chemical derived from the fruit of plants like chilis. Extraction of oleoresin capsicum
from peppers requires capsicum to be finely ground, from which capsaicin is then extracted
using an ethanol solvent. The solvent is then evaporated, and the remaining waxlike resin is the
oleoresin capsaicin.
An emulsifier, like propylene glycol, is used to suspend OC in water. The suspension is then
pressurized to make an aerosol pepper spray. Therefore (O.C.) is an oil derived compound and
must be treated as such.
Pepper spray is an inflammatory agent meant to immediately incapacitate. It inflames the
mucus membranes in the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. It causes immediate closing of the
eyes, difficulty breathing, runny nose, and coughing. The duration of its effects depends on the
strength of the spray, with the average effect lasting from 30 to 90 minutes. However, eye
irritation and redness can last for up to 24 hours after contact.
KKKops will aim for the eyes.

WHAT TO DO WHEN ARE PEPPER SPRAYED:

-First, stay calm; Ask for a medic, or have a friend pull you aside.
-avoid rubbing your eyes and adapt the steps outlined below:
If you are helping someone who has been sprayed...
-Put on gloves, if you have them available; Getting pepper spray on your own fingers SUX.
-Ask them if they are wearing contacts. If they are, either remove the contacts for them, or give
them a glove and have them remove the contacts from their eyes immediately. It is imperative
that the contact is removed.

- Whoever is sprayed must avoid rubbing their eyes, it’s a common first response but will fuck
you up in the longer term. The best thing to do is to tell the person to sit on their hands.
-Get water, (water bottles with the “sports cap” are the best). They provide a better trajectory to
control and some necessary pressure. Have the person tilt their head back slightly.
-Hold open your comrades’ eye, with your index finger and thumb. Starting from the center of
the eye, begin to flush the eye, leading the water away from their eye toward the side of their
head. Do not flush the eye straight downwards, your comrade will have pepper spray on their
lips!
-Use a full water bottle to flush out their eyes and ask them to blink as much as possible.
-Once you’ve done this, use a dry compact, like a paper towel or cloth and hold it against their
eye.
-Use “tear free” baby shampoo or mild dish detergent and lightly massage on the lid and outside
of the eyelid. Mild detergent soaps and shampoos help break down the O.C. oil.
-Then flush again with water. Continue to flush with water and use soap a couple of times. This
helps, but does not completely absolve the symptoms. Time will heal.

NOTES:
-Avoid poorly ventilated spaces after your pepper spray altercation, it will only make it worse.
Pepper spray will “off gas” so being in a confined space can make the burning worse.
-Use cold water, hot water also activates the oils.
-Wash any clothes that came in contact.

Things NOT to do:

-DO NOT USE MILK-its does not help break down the oils within the pepper spray
-DO NOT RUB your eyes, and avoid touching your face
-DO NOT try to salvage your contacts, they must be removed and thrown out
-DO NOT PANIC, it makes everything worse.

TEAR GAS
Tear gas, formally known as a lachrymator agent or lachrymator, (and sometimes colloquially known
as mace) is a chemical weapon that causes severe eye and respiratory pain, skin irritation, bleeding,
and blindness. It stimulates the nerves of the lacrimal gland to produce tears and it stimulates your
mucus membranes to produce mucus and snot. ALSO, the tear gas canisters themselves are
heat activated, so if you try to pick one up to throw back at kkkops, remember that you will
experience pain.

Tear gas is made of a powder substance, and includes capsaicin, which is found in hot foods. Do
not rub the tear gas on your skin; You will be essentially grinding powder particles into your skin,
tear ducts, mucus membranes, and skin, causing micro abrasions which will make the burning
sensation last longer.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU COME IN CONTACT WITH TEAR GAS:

-Get to a well ventilated area; fresh air is best.
-Flap your arms up and down to dispel the powder off of you.
-Try to open your eyes, so the air can get to your eyes.
-If you can determine which way the wind is blowing, stand in the opposite direction so wind blows
against you and blows away the compound.

ALLOW THE EFFECTS TO HAPPEN

-Tear gas is an irritant and attacks mucus membranes; you will cough, your nose will run; let it
happen! Your body is flushing it out!

-Bend at the waist and let the mucus, snot, tear, etc run.

-Tear gas will stay on your clothes and in your hair, and is activated by water. Powder caught in your
hairline will be activated by sweat.

-Do not wipe sweat or tear gas away with hands; Use a clean cloth and wrap around your head to
avoid sweat from dripping into the eyes.

-The powder will stick to your clothes, be careful as to how you remove your clothes and keep the
collar of your shirt away from your face.

WASHING YOUR BODY:

-Make sure you wash your hair with your head tilted back or bend at the waist and wash your hair
away from your body.

-Avoid water running down the length of your body;It will drip down onto your genitals and it will
BURN.
-Baking soda and water will only help if you have A LOT of baking soda and access to buckets full of
water or a hose. Once you let the powder dry, you can try and wash it off, carefully with lots of water
in a shower.

NOTES:
-Avoid poorly ventilated spaces after your tear gas altercation, it will only make it worse. Tear gas
powder spreads, so being in a confined space can make the burning worse.
-Remember, when you go to the bathroom, the particles are on your hands and under your
fingernails. Wash your hands thoroughly BEFORE using the bathroom and AFTER.
-Wash any clothes that came in contact.

Things NOT to do:

- DO NOT PANIC
- DO NOT touch your face or skin
-DO NOT use water to “wash off” until the powder is dry on your skin.

WHY DID I MAKE THIS ZINE:

I compiled this zine to combat misinformation; and also to shift the narrative of medic care into the
hands of the people most targeted. Chemical attack safety knowledge is often hoarded by the
milaray, police, and medically trained. It is our duty to NOT re-share their advice, but re-author the
work and reclaim the hierarchy of knowledge. DO NOT SHARE information from kkkops or military
service people; WE KEEP US SAFE! BLACK LIVES MATTER.
