Gerunds and infinitives

When we use a verb followed by another verb, the second verb used will either be in the gerund form (-ing) or the infinitive form (to + verb). Here are
some tips to remember:

- The verbs start, begin and continue can be followed by either gerund or infinitive

- Many verbs such as try, stop, regret, remember, forget, mean and go on can be followed by either gerund or infinitive, but will have different meanings.

I started writing / to write you, but then my mum called.

I stopped to smoke. (I took a break from what I was doing to smoke a cigarette.)

I stopped smoking. (I gave up smoking for my health.)

She heard whispering behind the door.
