Kolb’s Learning Cycle Assignment

Brief Description:
The learning activity I am choosing to describe for this activity is a workshop about the concepts behind
clinical reasoning and how to use a concept-based tool to assess a learner’s skills after a case
presentation. It is a 2-hour long workshop which combines didactics with visual aids and multiple
interactive activities.

Kolb Cycle

Reflection
After completing the experiential learning circle for this activity, there are a few things I have noticed.
While this particular workshop is able to have some activities in each of the domains, it is unbalanced.
While the image does not quite reflect it, the majority of the workshop time is spent between abstract
conceptualization (introducing, explaining and visualizing the concepts behind clinical reasoning) and
reflective observation (multiple reflection and think-pair-share types of activities). There is considerably
less time spent in the more active domains of active experimentation and concrete experiences. Ideas
for additions to the workshop would be the concrete experience of handling, reading, and testing the
tool by themselves or in groups. This way they could become more familiar with the tool and use it to
apply and relate to the concepts which are reviewed in the rest of the workshop. I also think it would be
helpful to dedicate more time to experiment with the tool in the context of assessing and providing
feedback in different learner scenarios.
