ADAM COHEN

BAYLOR COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

CURRICULUM VITAE
PERSONAL STATEMENT
Famous educator Harry Wong has said, “the person who does the work is the only one who learns.”
This quote reflects my philosophy of education with one caveat: the work must be worthwhile. This
means that while learner-centered strategies are key, they must be paired with best evidence, grounded
in solid educational theory, well-planned, and evaluated to ensure outcomes are being met. I apply this
philosophy throughout my pursuits in medical education, where my goal is to be a leader and innovator
who improves education throughout the spectrum of medical learning. Through formal training in
certificate programs during residency and the Master’s of Education program at the University of
Houston, I have developed a well-rounded understanding of educational theory, as well as design and
assessment frameworks to begin to develop education innovations. Additionally, I have strived to gain
experience in leadership through a number of local and national roles.

When applying these skills to my medical career, my major focuses includes learner assessment as well
as teaching critical thinking both about their patients and about medical evidence, to medical trainees.
As part of my role on the Curriculum Renewal Ad Hoc Committee at Baylor College of Medicine, I am
involved in creating a critical thinking curriculum for the next generation of medical students. My
research has targeted assessment and feedback of learners and their clinical reasoning skills, a key
application of critical thinking. Furthermore, my focus of clinical research as part of the BRUE Quality
Improvement Research Collaborative is based on a diagnosis which requires careful thought and
reasoning to make. When teaching in the patient care setting, I focus on probing the reasoning behind
learner decisions to ensure a deep understanding of the patient and their hospitalization.
