Weird Situations & Odd Solutions

Foreword

Foreword
This book is about Weird and Odd things, people, situations & happenings. It’s a
fun and interesting way to find out about the world we live in, how things came to be, and
where we’re heading from there. The words Weird & Odd are general words which
basically mean, out of the ordinary, unexpected, different, unreasonable, unacceptable,
gross, un-uniform, shoddy, questionable, and any number of words that denote a change
from normal and expected routines. This brings us to another point. Looking at it from a
different perspective, normal and routine are not the same for every person. What’s weird
for one person may be normal for another, and what’s routine for one may be odd for the
next. Now that we’ve gotten the situation full of confusion and everyone is all shaken up,
let’s move on to some examples.

Let’s suppose a person got up one morning and started to dress for the day. In
dressing he puts the left shoe on the right foot and the right shoe on the left. He puts on
his jacket inside out and upside down. Finally, his hat is turned over and pulled down
around his head. What would you make of this situation? The normal conclusion would
be that there are some missing aces from his deck. His elevator stops between floors.
There are screws inside that need tightening. He forgot to wake up this morning & any of
a thousand other things, but suppose there are reasons for what he does. Then he doesn’t
look so crazy does he? If his weird actions really had a purpose we would look at him
differently.

Maybe he switched shoes to throw people off his track. They would think he was
going one way when he really went another. His jacket could be an indicator of his life
and state of mind at the time, inside-out and upside-down. Finally, the hat could have
been and indicator that he didn’t want to see what else was in store for him as the day
progressed on. Granted, these may be wild explanations for what he did but they are
reasons, and that helps you look at the situation from another perspective. There are
always reasons for what a person does even if it turns out that a person is deranged or
crazy. Take the shoes for instance. You and I know if that was his purpose for wearing
his shoes turned around it would not have worked, but he did have a reason. In this case,
his reason may also point out that he really is irrational or crazy.

This points out that there are reasons for what people do. There are also reasons
why things happen a certain way in nature. The things you are about to deal with are
natural and man-made weird oddities. The only thing that makes them weird or odd is
how we perceive them. The things contained in this book cover a wide range of subjects
from many disciplines but remember this; they are all thought of as weird or odd in some
way, there are man-made or natural reasons for each oddity, and they are all true.

Here are some examples of what you’ll find in these crosswords:

 Animals that can sleep for three years

 Skin color is not what you see
 Surprise ingredients contained in products

6
Foreword

 Things you inherit from parents & relatives

 How certain names originated
 Who invented what? & when?
 Health issues and remedies
 Legal issues and resolutions
 Odd animals and situations
 Weird happenings & phenomenon’s in nature
 Control of bodily functions & organs
 Spectacular records & accomplishments

These crosswords delve into these mysteries in a manner that facilitates learning
and understanding of subject matter not normally included in a daily routine. It is
presented in a practical and interesting way stimulating curiosity, the gateway to learning.
These crosswords are also designed to be fun and those are the two main reasons people
work crosswords; knowledge & fun the main reason for doing this book in crossword
format. Crosswords are a fun way to learn and exercise your mind. Exercising the mind is
just as important as exercising the body. With crosswords you look at things differently
and when you do that you open the door of creativity, bringing the mind alive & snapping
it to a state of alertness. Crosswords increase your ability to play “what if?” to work
outside the box.

Doing crosswords is a delightful mind game much like playing checkers or Tic-
Tack-Toe. You learn things you didn’t know, improve focus and attention, and enhance
problem solving skills. There has been a lot of debate over the years about Crosswords
and Alzheimer’s disease. Psychiatrists entertained the thought of mind games preventing
or curing the disease. It turns out that crosswords are a great cognitive workout for the
brain but they can’t help prevent Alzheimer’s. Don’t sell short activities that cause you to
use your mind in ways that are taxing or different. It frees your mind up to think in an
unchecked manner. I have solved many problems while thinking of something totally
different. The idea came to me in a flash, when my mind was free to do just that---Think!

I think of crosswords as a fun way to learn new things and an excellent tool for
mind exercise. I hope after tackling the puzzles in this book you will feel the same way.
These crosswords are chock-full of information that the average person would not know
if their life depended on it and that’s what makes solving them so much fun, the obscurity
and oddity of the answers. I know you’ll have fun and learn a lot working these puzzles
so be my guest and jump right in.

How to Solve the Crosswords

There are several tactics that can be employed to ease the pains of solving
crosswords. First, look through the clues and solve the ones that you know. In solving the
clues you know, more letters are available to help solve other clues. Next, tackle the fill-
in-the-blank clues as they tend to be easier than the non fill-in clues. The more fill-in-the-
blanks you solve; the more letters you will add to the solution of other clues. Next check
the three and four letter clues. They may be easier to figure out because of the small
number of letters involved. Finally, it’s okay to take a guess. Guessing has solved many
puzzles when everything else has failed. Crossword puzzle solving is cumulative and any
clue solved puts you that much closer to solving the whole puzzle. Always approach
crossword puzzle solving with an open mind and think freely and creatively when
searching for the answers.

The crosswords in this book are at a difficulty level of around medium. They are
not overly hard to solve but the obscurity and absurdity of the information more or less
compounds the situation. That is also what makes solving these puzzles so much fun, the
unexpected solutions peaks the imagination and spurs the solver on to find more gems to
awe and gag upon. These puzzles are a study in geographical and cultural state history.
With a little resourcefulness you will be able to work them and find that the answers were
well worth your efforts. One thing to keep in mind in working these crosswords is this:
90% of the clues have very little to do with word-play. The clues are usually
straightforward and mean just what they say. Have fun in solving them and be creative.
