Lesson 1
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
• solve multi-step routine and non-routine problems
involving division and any of the other operations of
decimals, and whole numbers including money using
appropriate problem solving strategies and tools

Introduction:
This lesson will help and guide you in dealing with multi-step problems. Living
our daily life pertains to solving a lot of problems from simple to complicated ones.
Word problems are fun and challenging to solve because they represent actual
situations that happen in our world. In a multi-step math word problem, one or more
problems have to be solved first in order to get the information needed to solve the
very question being asked. In any word problem, the true challenge is deciding which
operation is to be used.

LESSON PROPER
In a multi-step word problem, there may be two or more operations
needed. Before rushing to solve for the final answer, it is worth your time to slow
down and clarify your understanding of each sequence or process. Be sure you
know what is being asked, what you already know from the problem, and what you
need to know in order to arrive at the final answer.

1. Beth takes a ribbon that is 48 inches long and cuts it in 2 pieces. One
piece is twice as long as the other. How long is the shorter piece?
2. Karantin has Php30 000.00 in her bank account. She deposits another

Let us study this problem:

Riza wants to buy her sick mother bananas for Php65.50,

oranges for 44.75 and apples for 100.25. How much is her change if
she gives three 100-peso bills?

• Why do you think Riza wants to buy her mother some fruits?
• If you were Riza, would you do the same? Why?

What is It

For this kind of routine problem, we do the following steps:

STEPS THINK OF THIS
1. Understand the problem
• Know what is asked The amount of change Riza will receive
from her three 100-peso bills.

• Identify the relevant facts or Php65.50 cost of bananas

What is It (communication and character building)

Before the opening of classes, Joel is thinking of a way on how he could help
his mother earn money for their daily expenses. He then decided to collect things he
could sell. He collected 250 empty plastic bottles and some metal scraps in their
neighborhood. After selling all of them, he earned Php137.50. If the buyer gave him
Php100.00 for the metal scraps alone, how much was the cost of each plastic bottle?
• Before we proceed to discussion, what are your thoughts about Joel?
• How do you describe him as a son?

Here’s how we solve the problem: (non-routine)

1. Let us represent the problem thru this diagram:

metal
Cost of 250
bottles
+ scraps=Php100.00 = Php137.50 as the total earnings
2. Since we were asked to find the
cost of each bottle, we eliminate first the cost of metal scraps to get the
remaining amount for the 250 bottles. We work backwards.

metal
= Cost of 250
Php137.50 as the total earnings - scraps=Php100.00
bottles

3. Let us represent the problem thru a number sentence:

Php137.50 – Php100.00 = cost of 250 bottles
Then: Php37.50 = cost of 250 bottles
4. Knowing the cost of 250 bottles as Php37.50, we can now find the cost of each
bottle.
Php37.50 ÷ 250 bottles = Php0.15

Answer: Each plastic bottle cost Php0.15

Use an illustration to solve this problem.

Php10.00 to the gasoline boy. How much does a liter of gasoline cost?

Lolo Jose’s rectangular lot has a perimeter of 55.5 m. If the length is

double the width, how long is grandfather’s lot?
To solve this problem, we will use a diagram.

Given:
P = 55.5 Lolo Jose’s rectangular lot width
m

From the given

condition “length is length = 2w or length = w + w
double the width”

Based on the formula: (Perimeter) P = 2l + 2w

Let us substitute 2w instead of l : P = 2(2w) + 2w
Then
P = 4w + 2w
Use Division
P = 6w Property of Equality

And to find the value of w, we both divide the equation by 6

6

GRADE6
Mod10Q1W10: Numbers and Number Sense

!

"

𝑷
We can now use the formula W = to find the value of each width
𝟔

Therefore:

𝟓𝟓.𝟓𝒎
W =
𝟔

W = 9.25 m

Now that we know the value of the width, let us go back and substitute it to the
original formula : P = 2l + 2w

substitute : 55.5 m = 2l + 2(9.25m)

multiply : 55.5 m = 2l + 18.5m

do transposition: 55.5m – 18 .5 m = 2l

subtract : 37 m = 2l

𝟑𝟕𝒎
=l
𝟐

18.5 m = l

FINAL ANSWER: 18.5 m – length of Lolo Jose’s rectangular lot

To check, use the formula : P = 2l + 2w

Substitute the values : 55.5 = 2(18.5) + 2(9.25)

Use PEMDAS rule: 55.5 = 37 + 18.5

The equation is TRUE : 55.5 = 55.5

Remy bought two handkerchiefs with different prices for Php112.20. The
higher price was twice as much as the other. How much was the cheaper price?

Use an illustration to solve this problem.

In using Elimination Process or Transposition, always

remember these:

Rule1: Do the same thing

When working with equations remember to do the same thing to
both sides of the equation.

Rule2: Choose Opposite Operation

To transpose something do the opposite operation on it when
carrying it across the equal sign.
