What I Need to Know

1
At the end of the lesson you are expected to solve routine and
non-routine problems involving multiplication without or with addition or
subtraction of fractions and whole numbers using appropriate problem
solving strategies and tools.
Routine problems are those ordinary situations which can be
answered immediately while non-routine involves careful analysis and
critical thinking.
However, both can be solved following simple steps. This module will
help you guide to understand it better.
Good luck!

In converting dissimilar fractions to similar fraction, we

need to get the LCD.
Add the whole numbers and the fractional parts.
Simplify whenever possible.

To multiply a fraction by another fraction, multiply the

numerators and the denominators.
Simplify the product whenever possible.
Cross multiply or cancel common factors appearing in the
numerator and the denominator of any of the two fractions
being multiplied.

What’s New
2
To start, read and analyze the problem inside the box. Then answer the questions
that follow. This activity will guide you to learn more about the topic.

Tatay Nardo harvested 2 sacks of rambutan from his farm, each sack weighed
1
25 kilograms. For him to share his blessings during this time of the pandemic, he
4
1
gave of all the harvested rambutan to his neighbors. How many kilograms of
3
rambutan were left to Tatay Nardo?

Let us follow these steps below to solve the given word problem.

1. Understanding the problem

How many kilograms of rambutan were left to Tatay

a. What is asked?
Cardo?
b. What are the given
facts?
1
25 kilograms
4
1
of all the harvested rambutan
3

2.Plan
a. What processes are Multiplication and Subtraction
involved in the
problem?
b. What should we do to We should find first the total weight of the rambutan
solve the problem? 1
and get part of it.
3
c. What would be our 1 1
(2 x 25 )− =N
number sentence? 4 3
3.Solve
Write the correct units/label of Solution
your answers
Number Sentence:

The whole number 2 can (2 X 25 14 )− 13 =N

be written as a fraction
whose denominator is 1.
Change the mixed
number to improper
Multiply first the proper fraction and whole numbers.
fraction. Multiply.
Change the answer to
simplest form if needed. 2 1 2 101 202 2 1
x 25 = x = ∨50 ∨50
1 4 1 4 4 4 2
3
Subtract 1/3 of all the harvested rambutan.

1 1 3 2 1
50 − =50 − =50
2 3 6 6 6

1
❖ Therefore, there 50 kilograms of rambutan were
6
left to Tatay Nardo.

4. Check and Look Back

Review and check to justify your answers.

Another example:
2
Mercy spent ½ of an hour doing her homework. She spent of it doing English. How
3
much time did she spent doing her English homework?

Understand.
a. What is asked?
● The amount of time Mercy spent doing her English homework

b. What are given?

1
● of an hour doing all homeworks.
2
2
● Spent of it doing English
3

Plan. What strategy can we use to solve the problem?

a. What operation will be used?
● Multiplication
b. Write a number sentence.
2 1
● x =N
3 2

Solve.
2 1 3 1 1
x = ∨ Therefore, Mercy spent of an hour doing her English homework.
3 2 6 3 3

Check.
One way to check your answer is to go back to your solution or try another method.
2 1 2 1
x = ∨
3 2 6 3

4
What Is It
We can solve routine and non – routine problems involving multiplication
without or with addition or subtraction of fractions and whole numbers using
appropriate problem solving strategies and tools by following the steps in
solving problem. Here are the steps.

Understand
Know what is asked.
Know the given facts.

Plan
Determine the operation to be used.
Give the number sentence.

Carry out the plan

Show your solution (following the
rules).

1. Understand the problem

a. What is asked: The meters of cloth left.

5
b. What are the given facts: 4 3/4 meters long cloth of Sam and 2 1/2 cloth she
used

2. Plan
a. Processes are involved in the problem?
______SUBRACTION_____
