Problem Solving Involving Addition and Subtraction of
Decimal Numbers
Lesson 3.1. Solving Routine Problems Involving Either Addition or
Subtraction of Decimal Numbers

Niño and Eliah wanted to have a surprise for their

mother’s birthday, so they planned to save money
from their weekly allowance.
Let’s analyze and solve the problem.
Niño saved Php 250.65 from his weekly allowance.
Eliah saved Php 186.75.
How much money did they save altogether?
Follow the four step-plan to solve the problem.

First, read and understand the problem.

Know a. What is ask for?
It is the amount of money they saved altogether.

b. What are the given facts?

These are the Php 250.65 Niño’s savings and Php 186.75 Eliah’s
Plan savings.
w Second, plan how you will solve the problem.
a. What is the process to be used? (addition)
b. What is the number sentence?
Php 250.65 + Php 186.75 = n
Third, solve.
Solve Php 250.65 + Php 186.75 = n
Php 250.65
+ Php 186.75
Php 437.40
Check Fourth, verify if the answer is correct.
To check:
w
Php 437.40 amount they saved Php 437.40
- Php 250.65 Niño saved - Php 186.75 Eliah saved
Php 186.75 Eliah saved Php 250.65 Niño saved

Answer: Niño and Eliah saved Php 437.40.

4
Let’s have another problem.

Niño and Eliah saved Php 437.40. They bought a bunch

of flowers that cost Php 150.50 and a cake that cost Php
245.50 for their mother’s birthday. How much money was
left to them?

Let’s solve the problem.

Read and understand the problem.

a. What is ask for?

Know
It is the amount of money left for them.
b. What are the given facts?
They had Php 437.40 from their savings.
The flowers cost Php 150.50 and the cake cost Php 245.50.
c. What is the hidden question?
it is the total amount of money they spent.

Plan Plan how you will solve the problem.

w a. What operations to be used?
These are addition and subtraction.
b. What is the number sentence?
Php 437.40 – (Php 150.50 + Php 245.50) = n

Solve Php 437.40 – (Php 150.50 + Php 245.50) = n

Step 1.
Php 150.50 bunch of flowers
+ Php 245.50 cake
Php 396.00 amount they spent
Step 2.
Php 437.40 amount they saved
- Php 396.00 amount they spent
Php 41.00 amount left

Check Verify if the answer is correct.

To check:
w
Php 396.00 amount they spent
- Php 41.40 amount left
Php 437.40 amount they saved

Answer: Nino and Eliah had Php 41.40 left with them.

Plan.
- Choose a strategy. - Working backward.

Solve.
- Perform the strategy. -Start with the amount of money left. Add this
amount to the cost of items bought.
Php 46.35 left
Php 486.25 for meat
+ Php 256.15 for canned goods
Php 54.75 for a loaf bread
Php 843.50
Answer: Mother had Php 843.50 at first.
Check.
- Verify if the answer is From Php 843.50, subtract all the costs of the
correct. items bought to arrive at the amount of money
left.
Php 843.50 at first
-Php 54.75 for a loaf bread
