Performing a Series of More Than Two Operations on Whole Numbers.

I. Learning Competency based on MELCs

Performs a series of more than two operations on whole numbers applying

Parenthesis, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction (PMDAS) or Grouping,
Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction (GMDAS) correctly. ( M5NS- Id-62.2)

II. Objectives:
Performs a series of more than two operations on whole numbers applying
Parenthesis, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction (PMDAS) or Grouping,
Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction (GMDAS) correctly.

III. Key Concept

This activity sheet serves as a self-learning guide for you to facilitate lesson
comprehension as it specifically aims to master your skill on performing a series of
more than two operations on whole numbers applying Parenthesis, Multiplication,
Division, Addition, Subtraction (PMDAS) or Grouping, Multiplication, Division, Addition,
Subtraction (GMDAS) correctly.

To solve the order of operations, these are the following rules:

1. Perform the operations within each pair of grouping symbols (parenthesis,

brackets, and braces) beginning with the innermost pair.

2. Simplify the expression with exponents.

3. Perform multiplication and division as they occur from left to right.

4. Perform addition and subtraction as they occur from left to right.

Example 1. 14 ÷ 7 × 2 + 4 – 5
Solution:
14 ÷ 7 × 2 + 4 – 5 Rule 3

2 ×2+4–5 Rule 3

4 +4–5 Rule 4

8 –5 Rule 4

3 Answer

Example 2. 8 × 2 ÷ 2 + 6 – 2

Solution:
8×2÷4+6–2 Rule 3

16 ÷ 4 + 6 – 2 Rule 3

4 +6–2 Rule 4

10 –2 Rule 4

8 Answer

Example 3. 3 × [4 - 2 × (10 - 8) + 12 ÷ 6 × 1]

Solution:
3 × [5 - 2 × (10 - 8) + 12 ÷ 6 × 1] Rule 1

3 × [5 - 2 × 2 + 12 ÷ 6 × 1] Rule 1

3 × [5 - 4 + 2 × 1] Rule 1

3 × [5 - 4 + 2 ] Rule 1

3×[ 1 + 2 ] Rule 1

3× 3 Rule 3

IV. Activity

Activity 1

Directions: Solve the expression below by following the rules.

1. 64 ÷ 2 × 3

2. 9 ÷ 3 +1 × 4

3. (10 – 6) + (5 – 1) × 15

4. 2 × [2 + 3 × (12 -3)]

5. 11 + 2 × 4 + {3 × [6 +(9 – 7) – 3] – 2}
ACTIVITY 2

Directions: A. Perform the indicated operations.

1. (14 + 3) – 7 = N

2. 5 × (5 + 9) = N

3. 35 ÷ 5 + 8 = N

4. (16 – 4) + (7 + 3) = N

5. (12 ÷ 3) + (11 × 3) = N

Directions: B. Place parenthesis in the equation so that each will be a true statement.

1. 18 + 6 – 4 = 20

2. 12 × 8 – 4 = 32

3. 27 ÷ 9 × 3 = 1

4. 16 – 8 + 8 = 0

5. 14 ÷ 3 + 4 = 2
ACTIVITY 3

Directions: Evaluate the following expressions.

1. (9 – 2) + (3 × 21)

2. (18 + 14) ÷ (4 + 4)

3. (36 ÷ 2 + [ 4 × (4 – 2) ]

4. (36 – 6) + [(2 × 42) + 7]

5. (42+ 15) × 2 – (500 ÷125)

6. 4 × (32 – 15) + 16

7. (93 + 7) × 6 + 20

8. 12 × 32 + (880 ÷20)

9. [(156 ÷ 12) × 2 × 4] ÷ 4 × 2

10.(44+82)÷(10+4)
ACTIVITY 4

Directions: Use the numbers 3, 4, 6, and 8 once in each exercise to make a true
statement.

1. ( ______ × _______ ) ÷ ( _____ + ______ ) = 3

2. ______ × _______ ÷ ( ______ × _______ ) = 2

3. ______ × ( ______ × ______ ) ÷ _______ = 16

4. ______ ÷ ( _______ - _______ ) + _______ = 12

5. (______×_________) + _________ - _______= 35
