(Week 3, Day 1)
Title: Division of Simple Fractions

Background Information for Learners:

To divide fractions, rewrite the division as a related multiplication in which

you multiply the dividend by the reciprocal of the divisor.

Reciprocals – if the product of two numbers is 1, then they are

reciprocals or multiplicative inverse of each other. To find the reciprocal of a
fraction, interchange the numerator and denominator.

Example 1: (Reciprocals)

2 3 6 5 9 45
𝑥 =6=1 𝑥 5 = 45 = 1
3 2 9

Title: Solving Non-Routine Problems Involving Division of Fractions
and Mixed Numbers

Background Information for Learners:

Example 1: Mang Ambo makes decorative candles to sell on “All Souls

1 1
Day”. He has 15 2 𝑘𝑔 of wax. He bought 20 4 𝑘𝑔 more. If
3
he uses 1 5 𝑘𝑔 for each candle, how many candles can he
make?
Understand.
c. What is asked?
• The number of candles that Mang Ambo can make.
d. What are the given facts?
1
• Mang Ambo has 15 2 𝑘𝑔 of wax.
1
• He bought 20 4 𝑘𝑔 more.
3
• He uses 1 5 𝑘𝑔 for each candle.

Plan. What operation shall we use to solve the problem?

1 1
• Add 15 2 kilograms and 20 4 kilograms of wax. Then
3
divide the sum by 1 5
1 1 3
• (15 2 + 20 4) ÷ (1 5) = 𝑛

Solve. Show your computation.

1 1 3
Solve: (15 2 + 20 4) ÷ (1 5) = 𝑛
Let’s add first the mixed fractions inside the parenthesis.
1 1 1 1 2 1 3
(15 2 + 20 4) = (15 + 20) + (2 + 4) = 35 + (4 + 4) = 35 4
3
Now, divide the sum by the divisor 1 5
3 3 143 8
35 4 ÷ 1 5 = ÷5
4
143 5 143 𝑥 5
= 𝑥 =
4 8 4𝑥8
715 11
= = 22 32
32

Answer: Mang Ambo can make 22 candles.

Check. Check your answer.

11 3 715 8 715 𝑥 8
22 32 𝑥 1 5 = 32 𝑥 5 = 32 𝑥 5
