Introductory Message

This module is carefully designed to continually facilitate learners

to achieve mastery on the Most Essential Learning Competencies and
develop their 21st century skills. This module consists of essential
components developed appropriately for self-instructional mode of
learning. The components come in various developmental purposes that
are designed to diagnose (pretest), recall and associate (review),
discuss, explain and even provide practice activities, enrichment tasks,
assessments and answer keys.

Upon taking the pretest, determine whether you need to take or

skip this module. At 100% accuracy, you possess the mastery of the
topic in the module; hence, you don’t need to take it and you may choose
to proceed to the next module. At 99% and below, you are recommended
to undertake the module to acquire the necessary skills.

Though allowed, adult supervision is limited only to providing

assistance in accomplishing this module. It is highly recommended that
YOU, the learner, should try to engage independently in doing the
different tasks for you to become a critical thinker and problem solver
which are the twin goals of Mathematics.

May this module be utilized to its fullest extent in the purpose of

learning the competencies construed as Most Essential for a learner in
this level.

God bless and enjoy learning!

What’s New

Task 1
Read the situation. Then answer the questions that follow.
According to the report of the Local Government of Sibonga, there
were 22 768 families who received relief goods during ECQ. About how
many families who were able to receive the relief goods?

1. What is the actual number of families who received relief goods?

2. Is the number 22 768 closer to 22 000 or 23 000?
3. About how many families received the relief goods?
4. Is the number rounded down or rounded up?
5. To what place value is the number rounded off?
Task 2
Round off the number to the nearest underlined digit.
1. 5 496
2. 94 635
3. 87 914
4. 452 351
5. 316 285

What is It

In the first task, 22 768 is closer to 23 000. When rounding off

22 768 to the nearest thousands, it is 23 000. The number at the right of
2 in 22 768 is 7 which is greater than 5, thus, the digit 2 in the thousands
place of 22 768 becomes 3 by adding 1 in the thousands digit.

In the second task, the table shows the steps on how rounding off
numbers to the nearest thousands and ten thousands will be done.
Rounding off to the Nearest Thousands
Given What is the digit at Is it 5 or Round up or Rounded
number the right of the more? Round down? off Number
thousands place?
5 496 4 No Round down 5 000
94 635 6 Yes Round up 95 000

Module 4: Rounding Off Numbers

Rounding to the Nearest Ten Thousands

Given What is the digit at Is it 5 or Round up or Rounded
number the right of the ten more? Round down? off Number
thousands place?
87 914 7 Yes Round up 90 000
452 351 2 No Round down 450 000
316 285 6 Yes Round up 320 000

In rounding off numbers to the nearest thousands and ten thousands:

a. Find the place to which you are rounding
b. Look at the digit at the right of the round-off place
 If it is 5 or more, add 1 to the digit in the round-off place;
 If the digit is less than 5, retain the digit in the round-off
place; and
c. Drop all the other digits to the right of the round-off place and
replace them with zeros.
