RECONSTRUCTIONISM AND HUMANISM IN EDUCATION

Social reconstructionism is a philosophy that emphasizes the addressing of social

questions and a quest to create a better society and worldwide democracy.
Reconstructionist educators focus on a curriculum that highlights social reform as
the aim of education.

Students individually select their objectives and social priorities and then, with
guidance from the teacher, create a plan of action to make the change happen.
For example, a class may read an article on texting while driving and watch a
documentary on the need for awareness in school systems.

Reconstructionism Is an educational philosophy that views schools as tools to solve social

problems. Social reconstructionists reason that, because all leaders are the product of schools,
schools should provide a curriculum that fosters their development. Reconstructionists not
only aim to educate a generation of problem solvers, but also try to identify and correct many
noteworthy social problems that face our nation, with diverse targets including racism,
pollution, homelessness, poverty, and violence. Rather than a philosophy of education,
reconstructionism may be referred to as more of a remedy for a society that seeks to build a
more objective social order.

Humanistic learning is student-centered, so students are encouraged to take

control over their education. They make choices that can range from daily activities to
future goals. Students are encouraged to focus on a specific subject area of interest for
a reasonable amount of time that they choose.
Self-directed learning is the "process in which individuals take the initiative, with
or without the help from others, in diagnosing their learning needs, formulating
goals, identifying human and material resources, choosing and implementing
appropriate learning strategies, and evaluating learning outcomes" (Knowles,
1975). Learners have the freedom to create their goals and the manner in which
to achieve them. Teachers serve as advisors, facilitating the learning experience
and providing consultation as appropriate.
