Semi-Final Assignment

1. Out-of-field teaching – teachers teaching subjects for which they have little education or
training – has long been and continues to be an important issue in both private and public
schools not only in the Philippines but even in the United States. As head of the school how will
you address this issue? Explain explicitly your answer.

  Nothing is ever simple in education. The answer is that teachers - whether they are
subject specialists or generalists - need a wide range of different skills and attitudes
if they are to assist their students achieve high outcomes. These should include
relationships with students, subject matter knowledge and also an understanding of
pedagogical processes to develop the understanding that is required. Should a
teacher fail to have any of these, then it is likely that the learning in the classroom
will not be as successful. However, it would be foolish to isolate one of these skills to
the exclusion of all others: teaching, like most people-centred professions, requires a
range of abilities and skills that the practitioner carefully weaves together, in such a
way as to provide the most meaningful experience possible.

2. This issue creates both negative and positive to both proponent and oppositions of giving
homework to the learners. What's appropriate? What particular level be given or not given?
What benefits can be expected with or without homework? (please present your argument with
research studies not with your own opinion)

Homework is the best way to initiate the habit of self-study in us. Whatever we learn in
our classes is not sufficient for us but requires few hours of self-study for understanding that
matter. Initially, we hate homework but realize its value as we grow up and reach higher
classes. It fosters our communication with our parents and teachers as they are helping us in
completing and correcting our homework. I must say that in my opinion homework is essential
for every student. The basic issue lies in excessive homework that becomes a burden for
students and thus must be optimized. There are many advantages of homework for students in
comparison to the disadvantages. The homework should be less that can be completed fast.
Excessive homework requires a lot of time. It is not healthy to work and study all time.

3. Oftentimes we become “prisoners of time” according to study, this is the best-researched


piece for arguing for longer school days, a longer school year, and more time dedicated to
learning (National Education Commission on Time and Learning, April 1994), with this
information, what could be our ways and means to ensure quality education having learners
who underwent calamities and crisis that resulted to academic loss? Elaborate your answer.
To support education systems in addressing learning gaps and minimising disruption to
students’ educational journeys.
Before the pandemic, issues of quality of basic education have been raised as the
Philippines ranked lowest in recent regional and international learning assessments. DepEd is
seeking innovative strategies to address problems in education during the pandemic and in
achieving learning outcomes as students transition to in-person classes. Innovations for Poverty
Action (IPA) proposes to conduct exploratory research on Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL)
with DepEd. TaRL OR teaching at the Right Level is a potential strategy to address the learning
gaps among Filipino students. The J-PAL grant will enable IPA to explore opportunities for
DepEd to incorporate TaRL in the Philippine education. Government teachers are trained and
supported. In these models, teachers re-group children in Grades 3 to 5 based on learning
level for 1 or 2 hours a day to focus on basic skills. Teachers receive strong mentorship
support.

4. Academic -Ability grouping, also known as tracking, is the practice of grouping children
together according to their talents in the classroom. At the elementary school level, the
divisions sound harmless enough, but in secondary schools, the stratification becomes more
obvious these are their findings. Would you agree to their arguments? What are the pros and
cons of this practice?
When you place students of the same ability together, they usually are able to work at
about the same pace. This means the students that understand the concept you are teaching
can move on to a more advanced stage and the ones that need extra guidance can slow down
and get extra help. No one is waiting on someone else to grasp a concept (that they already
understand) and no one is being forced to move on before they are ready.

Teacher Can Work More Intensely With Those That Need Help When you divide your
class into ability groups, you will have groups that completely understand the topic and are
ready to move on to something new. You will have groups that understand most of the concept
but need some extra practice, and you will have groups that need extra instruction and
guidance before they can progress. Since they are seated and working together, you can take
this opportunity to sit with the ones that need extra instruction and provide it for them. The
other students have their assignments, so they are busy working on material that has been
tailored to fit their needs, so this frees you up to spend some time with those who need it.

Additional Work For The Teacher. Ability grouping can add additional work for the
teacher… and teachers are certainly busy enough. Ability grouping is not something that has to
be done every day, or even every week if you are having a particularly busy week. Figure out
the concepts where you seem to have the most differing abilities and use ability grouping only
in those areas. Ability grouping can be very beneficial, but only if it is done thoughtfully and
with a plan in mind. If you are simply too busy to undertake it one week, put it off until the
next.

Ability grouping can be looked at as simply another tool in your toolbox. Pull it out when you
need it and when it will work for both you and your students.
