Home-School Connection

Dear Family Member:

This week our class will be focusing on money. We’ll learn about
money and how we use it.

Here are some activities that you can do

with your child to help reinforce the skills
we’ll be practicing.

Word Workout (see page 144)

• Words to Know: paragraph clues
You and your child will make up
sentences using the list words to tell about shopping for a gift for
a friend’s birthday. You will each use the same list word in two
sentences.
• Spelling/Phonics: vowel team syllables You will let your child
look at the spelling words for two minutes. Then cover the words
and ask your child to spell all the words. Keep time as your child
spells, then encourage your child to try to beat the time.

Comprehension: problem and solution (see page 145)

Comprehension: Problem and Solution

The Walkathon
Listen as I read a short story. Think about the problem that is described.
Then circle the answers to the questions below. What solution would you
suggest?

Keisha and Malik were talking

about the walkathon. The second-
graders at their school were having
an event to raise money for a hunger
center. The money would be given to
the center to buy food for people
who didn’t have enough to eat.
“The weather report says it may
be stormy and windy that day,” said
Malik. He looked worried. “Do you
think people will walk in the rain?”
“Maybe, maybe not,” said Keisha. “Let’s stop here to get some poster
board to make signs for the walkathon.” The children walked into the
covered mall where their families shopped.
“If we change the date, we’ll probably lose walkers,” said Malik.
“Keisha, what should we do?”
