They are formed high above the Earth’s surface and sometimes at ground level. The three main forms of clouds are cumulus, stratus, and cirrus. (2) Their shapes are clues to predicting weather. But, tall, bulky cumulus clouds called cumulonimbus can produce thunderstorms. Stratus clouds are flat, sheetlike clouds. They normally mean warm or possibly wet weather. Cirrus clouds are wispy clouds that are found at great heights. Full of ice crystals, these clouds often indicate stormy weather. (3) So, the next time you leave the house, look up the sky, observe the clouds, and find out whether you will bring an umbrella or pack up a raincoat. After answering the questions above, you will notice that the text that describes the clouds begins with a definition, followed by the facts or information that support the topic, and ends with a purpose, to instruct the readers. Now, it’s your turn to recognize or specify which information classifies or describes. But first, let us learn the difference between classifying and describing. CLASSIFYING DESCRIBING What paragraph or information from the text classifies the topic?
What paragraph or information from the text

Elephants are mammals that are distinguished by their large or massive size and long trunk which is used for breathing, smelling, touching, feeding, drinking lifting heavy objects, and trumpeting. The pond was a beautiful place to visit. The falling leaves, all different colors, decorated the surface of the water. At the edges of the pond, small wildflowers grew. The golden forest glowed faintly in the distance. Text structure refers to the way an author arranges information in his writing. Text structure enables authors to organize their thoughts as they write. It also helps the reader in that it provides a structure in which information can be found and understood while it's being read. There are several different types of text structure, including: • Chronological: discussing things in order • Cause and effect: explaining a cause and its results • Problem and solution: presenting a problem and offering a solution • Compare and contrast: discussing similarities and differences • Classification: provides information organized according to categories • Explanation: is a text which tells processes relating to the forming of natural, social, scientific, and cultural phenomena. It is saying ‘why’ and ‘how’ of the forming of the phenomena Classification text, also known as text tagging or text categorization, is the process of categorizing text into organized groups. In this type of text, items or ideas are sorted according to commonalities. Also, in this type of text, the writer presents the overall idea then splits it into parts to provide clarity and description. Readers can recognize classification text through signal words such as: first, finally, to begin, next, in addition, on the other hand, for example, or then. To start with, I want you to look at this paragraph, this is about medical document and I want you to think about the specialty that this relates to. TINEA PEDIS, or ATHLETES FOOT, is a very common fungal skin infection of the foot. It often first appears between toes. It can be a one- time occurrence or it can be chronic. The fungus, known as Trichophyton, thrives under warm, damp conditions so people whose feet sweat a great deal are more susceptible. It is easily transmitted in showers and pool walkways. Those people with immunosuppressive conditions, such as diabetes mellitus, are also more susceptible to athlete’s foot. The answer is b. Looking to the paragraph, you would really think that it is podiatry because there is a word foot, there is something to do with fungal infection and skin infection. Aside from that Nephrology is the study of kidney. Therefore, podiatry is the correct answer. And what you just did is classification. Assigning the correct class label to the given output is classification.
There are several steps to be followed in the process of developing a written
piece that follows a classification text structure: 1. Decide on a main topic. 2. Divide the main topic into two or more subtopics. 3. For each subtopic, provide information and details to clarify and explain, or divide each subtopic further by creating categories for each subtopic. 4. If categories have been developed, provide information and details to clarify and explain each category. Example of Classification Directions: Read the following texts and distinguish which of them is a classification text-type. Write C if it is a Classification Text and NC if it is not. Summer Fun By: Rachelle V. Villamar, Nina went on a short one- week vacation, camping in the high mountain peaks of Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija with her parents and her little brother Jay-ar. Together, they put up a five-foot - high, eight-foot-long tent, which Nina’s father believes is enough for the four of them to sleep on. Nina thinks it is quite cozy inside. However, they did not have any electricity, internet connection, or running water from the faucet. But even so, Nina finds it fun to have a campfire at night and bathe in the cold mountain stream! Dogs Dogs are domesticated animals that have been living with humans for generations. Dogs can be classified in a number of different ways. For example, they can be classified by breed. Examples of different breeds include beagles, basset hounds, poodles and countless others as defined by the American Kennel Club (AKC). They can also be classified by their role in the lives of their masters and the work they do. For example, a dog might be a family pet, a working dog, a show dog, or a hunting dog. In many cases, dogs are defined both by their breed and their roll. For example, a dog could be a beagle that is a family pet. Public schools are funded by the state, and the majority of students in the United States attend them. Private schools are schools that do not receive federal funding but are instead supported by a private organization or funding from individuals. Private religious schools are based around a particular faith, such as Catholicism, Protestantism, Judaism, and so forth. Religion is part of the everyday lives of the students and they also learn about their faith in addition to regular subjects. On the other hand, private nonreligious schools do not receive state funding and have the ability to make their own rules. Alternative schools can be made up of a variety of different categories, such as the Montessori program or technical schools, which are typically self-paced and hands-on. Most students who attend class in a school building go to one of these types of institutions.
