What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you master the skill in measuring time using a 12-hour and a 24-hour
clock, calculate time in the different world time zones in relation to the
Philippines and solve problems involving time. The scope of this module
allows it to be used in many different learning situations. The language used
recognizes the different vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged
to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you
read them can be changed to be similar with the textbook you are now using.

After going through this module, you are expected to be able to:

1. measure time using a 12-hour and a 24-hour clock (M5ME-IIIg-14);

2. calculate time in the different world time zones in relation to the

Lesson

1 12-Hour and 24-Hour Clock

Time is a significant part of our lives. It can determine the ongoing and
continuous sequence of events. We will learn more about it through this
lesson.

Let’s begin!

What’s In

Directions: Answer the following questions. Write your answers on a separate

sheet of paper.

1. How many minutes are there in one and a half hour?

_____________________________________________________________________
2. How many hours are there in 390 minutes?
_____________________________________________________________________
3. The digital clock in your room is showing quarter to 10. What time is it
now?
_____________________________________________________________________
4. Chinie arrived at the Bus station 10 minutes before noon time. At what
time did she arrive at the station?
_____________________________________________________________________
5. Mayie left home at 5:30 in the morning. She returned 5 ½ hours later. At
what time did she return?
_____________________________________________________________________

3
What’s New

May and her family are going to

attend Church. She always attends 7:00
in the morning together with her family.
Before everything else, she always follows
her morning routine. She needs to pray
for 5 minutes before going out of bed, fix
her bed for 10 minutes, 10 minutes to eat
breakfast, 20 minutes to take a bath and
dressed, help a little in some house hold
chores for 15 minutes and travel for 10
minutes. If she wants to be in the church
at 6: 45 a.m., how much time does she
need to get ready?

The table below shows her morning routine before going to church and
the time she spends for each task.

Morning Routine Time Needed

Prayer Time 5 minutes

Fixing her bed 10 minutes

Breakfast 10 minutes

Bath/Dressing up 20 minutes

Household chores 15 minutes

Travel time 10 minutes

Total 70 minutes

May needs 70 minutes to get ready. She needs to wake up 70 minutes

before 6:45 a.m.

4
What is It

Time is an ongoing sequence of events that happens in our daily lives.

Time is used to measure the duration of an event. The basic unit of time is
the second. The other units are minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years,
decades, centuries and millenniums. We can measure the time using clocks
and calendars.
Units of Measurement Equivalent
(Time)
1 millennium 10 centuries
1 century 10 decades
1 decade 10 years
1 year 12 months
1 month 4 weeks
1 week 7 days
1 day 24 hours
1 hour 60 minutes
1 minute 60 seconds

For us to identify what time is 70 minutes before 6: 45 a.m. , we must

know the conversion of time using the table above and the proportion:

1 hour: 60 minutes= n hour : 70 minutes

1_ = _ n_ 60n = 70x1 1 -hour

60 70 60n = 70 60 70
60 60 60
10 - minutes
N= 1 hour and 10 minutes

Therefore, May needs to wake up 5:35 a.m. to be able to make it at 6:45

a.m. To know what time is it, we should subtract it.
6:45 a.m.-1:10= 5: 35 a.m.

Examples:
1. Noon 12:00 nn
2. Midnight 12:00 m.n
3. 5 hours after 5:00 a.m. 5 + 5 hours = 10 a.m.
4. 2 hours and 5 minutes before 9 – 2 hours = 7 20 – 5 minutes= 15
9:20 p.m. 7: 15 p.m.

5

12:00 3:00 6:00 9:00 12:00 3:00 6:00 9:00 12:00

a.m. p.m.

The 12-hour clock is a time convention in which they are divided into
two periods which is the a.m. (ante-meridian) and p.m. (post-meridian). We
classify morning time as a.m. and afternoon time as p.m.

9:30 a.m. 9:30 p.m.

While 24-hours is counted after 12 midnight. We indicate 12 midnight

as zero hour. In the 24-hours, the day is not divided into 2 parts and it’s a
continuous period of hours. It is written in 4 digits.

6
Converting 12-Hour Time to 24-Hour Time Format:
1. If the time is between 12:00 a.m. and 12:59 a.m., we just subtract 12
hours.
2. If the time is between 1:00 p.m. and 11:59 p.m., we will add 12 hours.

Examples:

✓ What is 5 p.m. in a 24-hour time?

- 5 + 12 = 17 ----→add the hours
- 5 p.m. is written as 17:00 in a 24-hour clock

✓ What is 12:00 m.n. in a 24-hour time?

- 12 – 12 = 0 ----→ subtract 12 hours
- 12 a.m. is written as 00:00

Converting 24-Hour Time to 12-Hour Time Format:

1. If the time is between 00:00 and 00:59, we just add 12 hours and make it
a.m.

2. If the time is between 01:00 and 11:59, just make it a.m.

3. If the time is between 12:00 and 12:59, just make it p.m.

4. If the time is between 13:00 to 23:59, subtract 12 hours and make it p.m.

Examples:

✓ What is 22:45 in a 12-hour time?

- 22 - 12 = 10 ----→ subtract first the hours
- 0 – 45= 45 ---→ subtract minutes
- 22:45 is written as 10:45 p.m. in a 12-hour clock.

✓ What is 00:57 in a 12-hour time?

- 00:57 + 12 = 12:57 ---→ add 12 hours
- 00:57 H is written as 12:57 a.m. in a 12-hour clock.

What is It

If you have been to an airport, you would see clocks with different
time as the pictures shown below.

Ottawa, Canada Washington, D.C. USA London, United Kingdom

Paris, France Manila, Philippines Warsaw, Poland

Tokyo, Japan New Delhi, India Beijing, China

Philippines and Canada belong to different time zones so therefore the

time of these two countries are different from each other in a particular time.
To determine or calculate the difference between two countries, we have to
use the World Time Zone.

Time Zone defines as one of the longitudinal regions which divide the
world with approximately 15 ° and each time zone is counted at 15 ° interval
and extends 7 ½ ° to the left and right of a central meridian.

Time Zones are counted starting from the Prime Meridian or/at 0 °
longitude and each time zone have a 15 ° intervals and extends with 7 ½ ° to
the left and right of the central meridian.
