What I Need to Know
In this module you are going to learn the following terms related to a
circle: center, diameter, radius, chord, arc and circumference.
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
identify the terms related to a circle (M5GE-llld-23.2);
draw circles with different radii using a compass (M5GE-llle-24).
What I Know

Lesson
Identifying the Terms Related
1 to a Circle
What’s In
Directions: Write C if the object suggests a circle and NC if not. Write your
answers on a sheet of paper.
1. 2. 3.
4. 5.
2
What’s New
Circles are around us. The shape of a P10-coin, pizza and a hula hoop
are some examples.
A circle is the set of all points in a plane with same distance from a
certain point. This point is called the center of the circle.
What are the basic terms related to a circle. Can you identify them?
How about ̅̅̅̅ ? Is it a diameter or a radius? It is a radius, a line segment from the
center to a point on the circle.
What part of a circle is ̅̅̅̅ ? It is a chord, a line segment joining two points on a
circle. Do all chords have the same measure?
3
What is It
The arc is the part of the circle between any two points. It
is a part or portion of the circumference of the circle.
4
What’s More
Activity 1. Directions: Label the parts of the circle. Write your answers on a
sheet of paper.
A B
___1. A line segment A. Arc
from the center of the circle B. Center
to any point on the circle. C. Chord
___2. A chord that connects D. Circumference
two points on the circle and E. Diameter
passes through the center F. Radius
of the circle.
___3. A line segment joining
two points on the circle.
___4. The distance around
the circle.
___5. A part or portion of
the circumference.
5
What I Have Learned
Directions: Supply the missing term in the blank. Choose the correct
answer from the words inside the box. Write your answers on a sheet of
paper.
What I Can Do
Directions: Identify the terms related to a circle using the given figure.
Write your answers on a sheet of paper.
1. H ___________
2. ̅̅̅ ___________
3. ̅̅̅̅ ___________
4. ̅̅̅̅̅ ___________
5. ̅̅̅̅ ___________
6. ̅ ___________
7. ̅̅̅̅ ___________
8. ̅̅̅ ___________
9. ̅̅̅̅ ___________
10. ̅̅̅̅ ___________

Additional Activities
What’s New
Using your bare hands will not guarantee that you will be able to draw
a perfect circle. Do you know that we have an instrument use to draw a
perfect circle?
7
What is It
Directions: Try drawing circles with radii (plural form of the word radius) of
3 cm, 4 cm and 7 cm, respectively. Use a sheet of paper for your answers.
How about if you are tasked to draw big circles? How will you do it?
You may draw big circles by using a pencil tied to a piece of string.
Tightly holding one point on the string (center of the circle) and moving the
pencil makes a circle.
8
Another Example
Can you draw a circle with a radius of 3 cm without using a compass?
Try this.
What’s More
1. Radius is 6 cm
2. With center O
3. With radii OP and OQ
4. With diameter PQ
5. With chord PR
Construct a circle with radius of 5 cm. Name the center of the circle point A.
using a ruler, draw line segment BC whose endpoints are on the circle
passing through the center. Construct a line segment whose one endpoint is
the center A and the other point is on the circle. Name the segment as AF.
Now, label the parts of the circle as center, diameter and radius.

What I Have Learned
Directions: Choose the correct answer from the words inside the box. Write
your answers on a sheet of paper.
2. The distance from the centerpoint of the circle to the outer edge is
___________.
What I Can Do
1. 1 cm
2. 1.5 cm
3. 1 dm
4. 2.5 cm
5. 9 cm
10
Assessment
I. Directions: Choose the letter of the correct answer. Write your answers on
a sheet of paper.
4. It is a line segment whose endpoints are in the circle passing through the
centerpoint.
A. chord C. radius
B. diameter D. segment
II. Directions: Use a real compass or an improvised one to draw circles with
these given radii. Do this on a sheet of paper.
1. 4 cm
2. 3.5 cm
3. 10 cm
4. 7.5 cm
5. 1.5 dm
