What I Need to Know

In this module you are going to learn the following terms related to a
circle: center, diameter, radius, chord, arc and circumference.
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
 identify the terms related to a circle (M5GE-llld-23.2);
 draw circles with different radii using a compass (M5GE-llle-24).

What I Know

Directions: Write T if the statement is true and F it is false. Write your

answers on a sheet of paper.

1. The diameter is one-half of the radius.

2. The arc is a part of the circumference.
3. The diameter is the longest chord in a circle.
4. A circle is named by its center.
5. The chord is also a diameter.
6. A compass is an instrument used to draw circles.
7. The plural form of radius is radii.
8. Circles are polygons.
9. If a radius measures 12 cm, then the measure of the diameter is 6 cm.
10. A Circle is a closed plane figure made up of line segments.

Lesson
Identifying the Terms Related
1 to a Circle

A circle is round-shaped figure that has no corners or edges. It is the

set of all points in a plane with same distance from a certain point. This
point is called the center of the circle.

What’s In

Directions: Write C if the object suggests a circle and NC if not. Write your
answers on a sheet of paper.

1. 2. 3.

4. 5.

2
What’s New

Circles are around us. The shape of a P10-coin, pizza and a hula hoop
are some examples.

A circle is the set of all points in a plane with same distance from a
certain point. This point is called the center of the circle.

What are the basic terms related to a circle. Can you identify them?

Let’s try this!

Segment ̅̅̅̅ passes at the center of the

circle. How is it called? It is the
diameter of the circle. How many radii
are there in ̅̅̅̅? There are 2 radii, ̅̅̅̅
and ̅̅̅̅.

How about ̅̅̅̅ ? Is it a diameter or a radius? It is a radius, a line segment from the
center to a point on the circle.

What part of a circle is ̅̅̅̅ ? It is a chord, a line segment joining two points on a
circle. Do all chords have the same measure?

What part of a circle is ̅̅̅̅ ? It is an arc. It is a part or portion of the circumference

of the circle.

3
What is It

The following terms are related to a circle.

A circle is a simple closed curve. It is a set of all points

that are at the same distance from a given point in the
plane called center. the midpoint of a circle is called
center.

A chord is a segment whose endpoints lie on the circle.

A diameter is a chord that connects two points on the

circle and passes through the center of the circle. Every
diameter is a chord. The diameter is two times the radius.

A radius is the segment from the center to any point in

the circle. ( plural-radii). The length of the radius is one-
half the length of a diameter of a circle.

The circumference is the distance around the circle.

The arc is the part of the circle between any two points. It
is a part or portion of the circumference of the circle.

4
What’s More

Activity 1. Directions: Label the parts of the circle. Write your answers on a
sheet of paper.

Activity 2. Directions: In column B are terms related to a circle and their

corresponding definitions are written in column A. Write the letter that
corresponds to the correct answer on a sheet of paper.

A B
___1. A line segment A. Arc
from the center of the circle B. Center
to any point on the circle. C. Chord
___2. A chord that connects D. Circumference
two points on the circle and E. Diameter
passes through the center F. Radius
of the circle.
___3. A line segment joining
two points on the circle.
___4. The distance around
the circle.
___5. A part or portion of
the circumference.

5

Lesson Drawing Circles

2 with Different Radii
Using a Compass

What’s New

Using your bare hands will not guarantee that you will be able to draw
a perfect circle. Do you know that we have an instrument use to draw a
perfect circle?

In drawing circles we need a compass. A compass is an instrument

used in drawing circles.

7
What is It

Here are the steps in drawing circles using a compass.

1. Insert a sharp pencil into the holder of the compass

2. Open the compass to the radius desired for your circle. The radius is the
distance from the centerpoint of the circle to the outer edge.
3. Place the compass point on a piece of paper where you would like the
centerpoint of the circle to be.
4. Place the point of the pencil on the paper.
5. Rotate the compass to mark a circle on the paper with the pencil. Draw
without lifting the point of the compass off the paper.

Directions: Try drawing circles with radii (plural form of the word radius) of
3 cm, 4 cm and 7 cm, respectively. Use a sheet of paper for your answers.

How about if you are tasked to draw big circles? How will you do it?

You may draw big circles by using a pencil tied to a piece of string.
Tightly holding one point on the string (center of the circle) and moving the
pencil makes a circle.

8
Another Example
Can you draw a circle with a radius of 3 cm without using a compass?
Try this.

Get a strip of cardboard. Make two tiny holes 3 cm apart. Place a

pencil through each hole. Fix one pencil inplace as you move the other
pencil around.

What’s More

Activity 1. Directions: Draw a circle with the following conditions: Write

your answers on a sheet of paper.

1. Radius is 6 cm
2. With center O
3. With radii OP and OQ
4. With diameter PQ
5. With chord PR

Activity 2. Direction: Do the following on a sheet of paper.

Construct a circle with radius of 5 cm. Name the center of the circle point A.
using a ruler, draw line segment BC whose endpoints are on the circle
passing through the center. Construct a line segment whose one endpoint is
the center A and the other point is on the circle. Name the segment as AF.
Now, label the parts of the circle as center, diameter and radius.
