Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you , our dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, quesrions, directions.
Exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Eac part should part should guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understandthe lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM. This
will tell you if you need to proceed on completing thus module or if you need to ask
your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson.
At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test tp self-check your
learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you will
be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also provided
to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best
help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this
SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And read
the instructionscarefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks

You see percent (%) sign everywhere, in the market, malls, magazines,
newspapers and on your cellphones or tablets. So, it is important that you know and
understand the meaning of percent as well as the relationship of percent, fraction,
ratio and decimals.

Lesson Relationship of Percent,
1 Fractions, Ratios
and Decimals
It was in the 15th century when the idea of percent began. It came from the Latin
word, “per centum “ which means “ for every hundred”. A percent is a ratio of a
number to 100. It is represented by the symbol “% ”.

Changing Percent to Decimal

Example:
1) 15% = 0.15
2) 9% = 0.09
3) 68% = 0.68
Percent is a ratio with 100 as the second term. So, to change percent to ratio,
remove the percent sign and write 100 as the second term.
Example:
1. 27% = 27 : 100
2. 5% = 5: 100
3. 87% = 87:100
4. 1% = 1:100

What I Have Learned
Directions: Fill in the missing words to complete the meaning. Choose your answer
from the choices given inside the box. Copy and answer on a sheet of paper.
Percent means per (1) ____________. Percent can be written as a ratio with 100 as
the second term or a fraction with 100 as the denominator. It can also be written as
decimal number.
To change percent to fraction, remove the percent sign and write the number as
the (2) ____________, then write 100 as denominator. Change the fraction to (3)

In writing percent to decimal, remove the percent sign, then move the (4)
___________ twice to the left. In changing decimal to (5) ____________, we move the
decimal point twice to the right and affix the percent sign.

4. 36% of Grade 5 pupils walk to school every day. Write 36% in decimal.
5. Kristine packed 20 grapes and a pear in her lunch. She ate thirteen grapes and
a pear. What percent of the grapes did Kristine eat?

Lesson
In Mathematics, percent are used like fractions and decimals, as a way to describe
parts of a whole. When you are using percent, the whole is considered to be made
up of a hundred equal parts. In order to apply percent in our daily life,
understanding its elements, rate, base and percentage is a must.
