Mathematics
Quarter 3 – Module 1:
Understanding Percent
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you , our dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, quesrions, directions.
Exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Eac part should part should guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understandthe lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM. This
will tell you if you need to proceed on completing thus module or if you need to ask
your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson.
At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test tp self-check your
learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you will
be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also provided
to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best
help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this
SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And read
the instructionscarefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks
in this module, do not hesitate toconsult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

Lesson Relationship of Percent,
1 Fractions, Ratios
and Decimals

It was in the 15th century when the idea of percent began. It came from the Latin
word, “per centum “ which means “ for every hundred”. A percent is a ratio of a
number to 100. It is represented by the symbol “% ”.

What’s In

Directions: Complete the table by writing the number word in fraction and decimal
forms. Write your answer under the proper column. Do it on a sheet of paper.

Number word Fraction Decimal

1. Eighty-two hundredths
2. Seventy-five hundredths
3. Two-hundredths
4. Fifteen- hundredths
5. Nine-hundredths

3
What’s New
Read and understand the problem.

Luis and Ernie earned ₱100 for

selling junk. They gave ₱73 to their
mother and spend ₱27 to buy
candies. What percent of their
earnings did they give their mother?
What percent did they spend?

a. How did Luis and Ernie earn money?

b. How much did they earn?
c. How did they spend their earnings?

The figure below represents Luis and Ernie’s earnings and savings. The 100
boxes show the total earnings while the 73 shaded boxes represents the amount
given to their mother.

“73 out of 100” can be written as:

Percent: 73%
Ratio: 73:100

Fraction: 73
100

Decimal: 0.73

4
What is It

Compare the shaded part in each grid.

35

percent ratio decimals fraction

Changing Percent to Fraction

Percent may be written in fraction form. To change percent to a fraction, remove

the percent symbol (%) and write the number as numerator, then 100 as
denominator. This is from the definition that percent means for “every hundred.”

Change the fraction to lowest term, if possible.

Example:

Percent Fraction Fraction in lowest term

1) 42% 42 21
100 50
0
9 9
2) 9% 100 100

25 1
3) 25%
100 4

16 4
4) 16%
100 25

5
Changing Percent to Decimal

Percent may also be written as a decimal number. To change percent to decimal,

write the percent as a fraction, then divide the numerator by the denominator.

Example:
Percent Fraction Decimals

1) 15% 15 0.15
100
9
2) 9% 0.09
100
13
3) 13% 0.13
100

Another way of changing percent to decimal, change percent symbol (%) to

decimal point then move it twice to the left.

Example:

1) 15% = 0.15

2) 9% = 0.09

3) 68% = 0.68

Changing Percent to Ratio

Percent is a ratio with 100 as the second term. So, to change percent to ratio,
remove the percent sign and write 100 as the second term.

Example:

1. 27% = 27 : 100
2. 5% = 5: 100
3. 87% = 87:100
4. 1% = 1:100

What I Have Learned

Directions: Fill in the missing words to complete the meaning. Choose your answer
from the choices given inside the box. Copy and answer on a sheet of paper.

decimal point hundred lowest numerator percent

Percent means per (1) ____________. Percent can be written as a ratio with 100 as
the second term or a fraction with 100 as the denominator. It can also be written as
decimal number.

To change percent to fraction, remove the percent sign and write the number as
the (2) ____________, then write 100 as denominator. Change the fraction to (3)
__________ term.

In writing percent to decimal, remove the percent sign, then move the (4)
___________ twice to the left. In changing decimal to (5) ____________, we move the
decimal point twice to the right and affix the percent sign.

What I Can Do

Directions: Read the problem carefully. Answer each item. Write your answer on
a sheet of paper.

1. What fraction of the cellphone’s battery is used if the screen says that the
remaining battery is 29%?
2. Carlo scored 65 out of 100 item test in Math. What percent of the test did he
get correctly?
3. Forty percent of the pupils ride to school. What fraction (in lowest term) of the
pupils ride to school?
4. 36% of Grade 5 pupils walk to school every day. Write 36% in decimal.
5. Kristine packed 20 grapes and a pear in her lunch. She ate thirteen grapes and
a pear. What percent of the grapes did Kristine eat?

2 Base, Percentage and Rate

In Mathematics, percent are used like fractions and decimals, as a way to describe
parts of a whole. When you are using percent, the whole is considered to be made
up of a hundred equal parts. In order to apply percent in our daily life,
understanding its elements, rate, base and percentage is a must.

What’s In

Directions: Determine whether the missing element is percentage (P), rate (R) or
base (B). Write your answer on a sheet of paper.

__________1.)____% of 10=10

__________2.) 12% of 72=____

__________3.) 8% of ____=7

__________4.) 6% of 200= ____

__________5.) 20% of ____=16

What’s New

Seventy-five percent of the 40 pupils of Mrs. Robles attended the Magic Show.
How many pupils attended the magic show?

The number sentence in this problem:

75% of 40 is ________.

What is the missing part in the mathematical sentence?

a. How many pupils did Mrs. Robles have in all?

Answer: 40 is a whole or total number. It is called base.

b. How many percent of the pupils attended the magic show?

Answer: 75% is the rate which can be expressed as a ratio or as fraction

10
c. How many pupils attended the magic show?

Answer: 30 is 75% of 40.

30 is the percentage. It is a part of the whole.

Therefore the missing element is percentage.

What is It

Study these examples.

15% of 60 is 9.

Rate
Base

Percentage

 15% is the rate. It is given as percent. It can be expressed as a ratio or

as a fraction.
Rate is the number with the % sign.
 60 is called the base. It is the whole of which you take the percent.
Base is the number that usually follows the phrase “percent of”.
 9 is called the percentage, meaning part of the whole.
Percentage at a constant rate is directly proportional with base.

In symbols:

P = R x B , where P is the percentage, R is the rate and B is the base.

Another example:

54 is 45% of 120

Rate = 45%

Base = 120

Percentage = 54

11

the income is spent for food?

4. Leo saved 30% of his monthly earnings. If he saved ₱4000 a month, how
much was his earnings?
5. If Justin scored 75% on a 20 item test, how many points did he get?
