MELC 29: Visualizes decimal numbers using models like blocks,
grids, number lines and money to show the relationship to fractions

A. Introduction and Discussion

This module is all about visualizing decimal numbers using models like
blocks, grids, number lines and money to show the relationship to fractions.
It also includes pre-requisite skills and concept on fractions with factors of 10
as denominator and naming fractions for the parts shaded.

B. Illustrative Examples:
Use the illustration below to visualize 0.5. Observe that there are 10
squares representing the whole.

There are 5 shaded squares out of

10 squares. 5 out of ten can be
written as 0.5 in decimal form.
Whole

Let’s try another example. Observe that the whole is equally divided
into 100 squares.

There are 14 shaded squares out

of 100 squares. 14 out of 100 can
be written as 0.14 in decimal form.

Note:
• To visualize a decimal number, we use grid, blocks, number
line or money.

MELC 30: Renames decimal numbers to fractions, and fractions

whose denominators are factors of 10 and 100 to decimals

A. Introduction and Discussion

This module is all about renaming decimal numbers to fractions, and
fractions whose denominators are factors of 10 and 100 to decimals. It also
includes pre-requisite skills and concept on: naming fractions for the parts
shaded and; fractions with factors of 100 as denominator.

B. Illustrative Examples:
Study the examples below.
3
The decimal number 0.3 can be written as in fraction as shown by
10
the shaded regions below.

As a decimal, 0.3 has one digit after the decimal point. So, we
3
rename 0.3 as 10 in fraction.

Look at how 0.19 is written as a

fraction. The decimal number 0.19 is
19
written as in fraction form as shown
100
in the hundred squares.

Study these examples of renaming decimals to fractions.

5 5 1 4 2 2
1.) 0.5 = ÷ = 2.) 0.4 = ÷ =
10 5 2 10 2 5

6 2 3 28 4 7
3.) 0.6 = ÷ = 4.) 0.28 = ÷ =
10 2 5 100 4 25

55 5 11
5.) 0.55 = ÷ =
100 5 20

Now, look at how these fractions are written as decimals.

8 32 9 45
1.) = = 0.32 2.) = = 0.45
25 100 20 100

12 24 3 6
3.) = = 0.24 4.) = = 0.06
550 100 50 100
Note:
• To rename decimal numbers to fractions, write the decimal as a
fraction with 10 or 100 as the denomination, then reduce to lowest
term.
• To rename fractions whose denominators are 10 and 100 to decimal
numbers, count the number of zeroes in the denominator. The tenth
has one digit after the decimal point. The hundredths has 2 digits after
the decimal point. Zero is used as a place holder.
• To rename fractions whose denominators are 10 and 100, first rename
the fractions in their equivalent fractions in tenths and hundredths,
then write them as decimal numbers.

MELC 31: Gives the Place Value and the Value of a Digit of a Given
Decimal Number through Hundredths

A. Introduction and Discussion

This module is all about place value and the value of a digit of a given
decimal number through hundredths. It also includes pre-requisite skills
involving the place value and value of a digit in whole numbers.

After going through this module, you should be able to give the place
value and the value of a digit of a given decimal number through hundredths.

In decimals, the value of the tenths place is one-tenth the value of the
ones place. The place to the left is ten times the place to the right. The
decimal point tells where the whole number part ends and where the decimal
part starts. The place value of a digit to the left is ten times of that to the right
whether to the left or to the right of the decimal point; equivalently, the place
value to the right is one- tenth of that to the left.

B. Illustrative Examples:

Every year, the garbage trucks in a certain barangay collects 65.27

tons of garbage. Some of this garbage is disposed in sanitary landfills while
others are recycled. What is the place value and value of each digit in the
given decimal?
The value of each digit in 65.27 depends on its position or place. Look
at the place value chart below showing the different places for the digits
65.27 and their corresponding place values and values.

whole number decimal decimal number

point
Place Value tens ones tenths hundredths
Value 60 5 0.2 0.07
Digit 6 5 . 2 7

The place value of the digit 6 is tens and its value is 60. The place
value of the digit 5 is ones and its value is 5. The place value of the digit 2 is
tenths and its value is 0.2. The place value of the digit 7 is hundredths and
its value is 0.07.

Give the place value and value of the underlined digit.

a. 0.84
ones . tenths hundredths
0 . 8 4
Place Value: tenths
Value: 0.8

b. 3. 91
ones . tenths hundredths
3 . 9 1
Place Value: hundredths
Value: 0.01

Note:
• The value of a digit in a decimal number depends on
its place or position in the number.
• The first place to the right of the decimal point is the
tenths place. The second place is in the hundredths
place.
