CHAPTER 1
I. Answer the following questions using your own words. Limit your answers to
7-15 sentences.

1. What Theater layouts/stages are you familiar with? Explain each a little.
I’m not really familiar with the specific type of stages before or theatre layouts but I’ve read
some articles pertaining about these stages. Reading the articles conceived an explicit idea
in my head about what stages are. The most popular theater style I read is the stage of the
proscenium. Throughout this style, the audience is on one side of the stage, with the
remaining sides covered and used by performers and technicians. Thrust stages can be
similar to proscenium stages but with a platform or performance area that extends into the
audience's room such that the audience is situated on three sides. In the theater in the
center, the audience is on all four sides of the stage. The fourth category of stage involves
the stage produced and discovered which may be built specifically for performance or may
include a space adapted as a stage.
2. How important is set design in a Theater play? Discuss briefly your own idea.

Without the set design it is hard for the actual concept of the play to be communicated
properly to the audience. Set design is like the supporting factor of an effective theatre play.
Having a set design organizes the play holistically which saves more time and increases
productivity. Set design is a system of which any theatre must have in order to have
sufficiency. Creativity and innovations in a theatre play can be applied not just on the play
itself but also in the set design. It is like the blueprint of your theatre stage.
3. Discuss the importance of live audience in a theater play. Use your own words.
Having live audience in a theatre play makes it more natural and realistic because of the
emotions being shown during the play. Theater is, in a way, the ultimate example of
consumerism. In Shakespeare's day, and even in ancient Greece, there was a certain
dimension of sensitivity in theater-if the audience didn't like it enough to turn up, the play
couldn't go on. Nowadays, we still lose sight of how many people have never sat in a theater
and seen a performance. If people don't tune in to a TV show or go to a movie, the actors
don't feel that pain right away. However, the audience is central in a live theater setting. The
audience plays an important role as they create demand that keeps production going.

4. In your own words, explain the importance of costumes in a theater play.


Costumes can be used to identify the age of the actors, the time of the performance,
costumes can be used to represent moods, costumes can be used to differentiate
professions, costumes are a cultural marker, costumes can tell the time and weather of the
performance, etc. Costumes are such a great part of the theater – they help tell the plot,
they allow actors to get into character, and they instantly teach the audience more about
what's going on. It's a very fun day for many student actors to collect their costumes.
Costumes definitely affect an actor’s performance – for better or worse.

CHAPTER 2

1. Drama is divided into the categories of tragedy, comedy, melodrama, and


tragicomedy. According to the names shown, what do you think are the differences
of these categories?

Comedies are lighter in tone than ordinary plays, and they are a positive result. The
intention of playwrights in comedies is to make their audience laugh. We use quirky
situations, odd personalities, and clever remarks. Consequently, tragic dramas have
darker themes, such as tragedy, suffering, and death. Protagonists also have a tragic
flaw — a characteristic that leads them to their downfall. Melodrama is an unrealistic
drama that is dramatic and explicitly appeals to the senses of the viewer. In a farce, the
characters are of a single dimension and simple, or they may be stereotypical. While,
tragicomedy is a special kind of drama that blends the elements of tragedy with humor.
This means that such a play may be tragic, but it will have a happy ending, or it may be
serious with some elements of humor appearing in the entire play.

2. Check the dictionary; find the meaning of a playwright. How meaningful is he/she in
Theater?
Playwrights, also known as authors, playwrights or scriptwriters, write a tale for theater
productions. The story or script has been published in a special style. The playwright
writes the words that characters say next to or under the name of each character. The
key duty of the playwright is to write scripts for theater productions. Playwrights the ones
who imagine and convey vital information, such as the way characters look and behave,
so that the actors can bring these roles to life for the audience.

3. DOBLE KARA SCRIPT - Prepare your script for your monologue. It should be 3-5
minutes. Choose two (2) characters that you think will be challenging for you to
portray and can boost your confidence.

Biyenan at Manugang
Ito ay isang storya na tungkol sa biyenan na inaalipusta ang kanyang manugang. Nagsimula
ang pang aalipusta nito kay Erlinda noong umalis ang kanyang anak na si Junjun papuntang
Saudi. Naiwan si Erlinda sa puder ni Mamaw, ang kanyang biyenan.

Erlinda: Bhe, mag-iingat ka sa saudi ha. (Niyakap si JunJun) Atska pagdating mo doon bhe
tumawag ka kaagad sa akin ha? Pls ha? Iloveyou bhe (Naiiyak)

Hinagkan din ni Mamaw ang kanyang anak na si JunJun.

Mamaw: Anak naman! pagkatapos ng dalawamput’ labing limang taon ngayon lang tayo
mawawalay sa isa’t isa. Basta tandaan mo pagdating mo doon sa akin ka unang tatawag.

Erlinda: Bhe, ayaw mo ba talagang ihatid kita sa airport? (Umiiyak) Mamimiss kita bhe, sobra.

Mamaw: Mag-iingat ka anak ha!

Naiwan ang magbiyenan sa Sala

Mamaw: Erlinda? Ano itong eksenang pinanggagawa mo? Diba!? Moment ko na yon kay
JunJun eh! Sumisingit ka eh! Nananadya ka ba!? (Tinulak si Erlinda)

Erlinda: Mamaw! Hindi po ako nananadya mamaw! (Umiiyak)

Mamaw: Ano ha!? Pero anyway, dahil magaabroad na si JunJun. Gusto kong magkalinawagan
tayo. Kanino dapat talaga sya magpadala ng pira?
Erlinda: Ahh... Hindi po ba dapat sa akin?
Mamaw: Hindi! ( Hinampas si Erlinda) Umupo ka dyan!

Mamaw: Tandaan mo ito! Dito ka nakatira sa bahay namin ng JunJun ko, kaya dapat sa akin
sya magpadala ng pira. Isaksak mo yan sa kokote mo!

Erlinda: Pero mamaw! Dipo ba ako ang asawa? Dipo ba karapatan ko yon?

Mamaw: Wala akong pakialam kung asawa ka! Okay!? Basta dito sa bahay tandaan mo. Ako
ang pinakamakapangyarihan dito! Sa akin ka ngayon Erlinda! Makinig ka palagi!! (Tinulak si
Erlinda)

May nakitang hawak na bagay sa kamay ni Erlinda

Mamaw: Erlinda, nakita ko yan.


Erlinda: Po? Alin po?
Mamaw: Yang hawak mo?
Erlinda: Ah wala po mamaw!
Mamaw: Anong wala!? Hindi ba sinabi ko ako ang pinakamakapangyarihan sa bahay na ito!
Ang bilis mo naman makalimot.
Erlinda: Po, hindi po.( Umiiyak)
(Pilit na inaagaw kay Erlinda ang hawak neto.)

Mamaw: Akin na yan!


Erlinda: Po, wag po! Mamaw.
(Nakuha ang hawak ni Erlinda)

Mamaw: Erlinda, siguro ito yung ginagamit mo kaya makinis na makinis ang balat mo!

Erlinda: Ah mamaw hindi po! Hindi ko po yan ginagamit sa balat ko.


Mamaw: Anong hindi? Ha! Gusto mo ba ikaw lang ang gagamit nito. Para ikaw lang maganda?!
Pati ba naman ito pinagdadamot mo!?

Erlinda: Hindi po mamaw! Ahh! Wag po. Wag nyo po!


(Ipinahid ni mamaw ang cream sa mukha neto.)

Erlinda: Wag nyo pong ilagay yan mamaw!

Mamaw: Huwag kang makilam! Gusto mo ikaw lang maganda Erlinda!?

Erlinda: Hindi po. Hindi po mamaw.


Mamaw: Erlinda ha! Naku Erlinda. Ha!
Erlinda: Mamaw! Huwag po.
(Patuloy pa rin nilalagay ni Mamaw ang Erlinda sa mukha) ng biglang....

Mamaw: Eeerlinda! Err-linda! Bakit hindi natatanggal ang kamay sa mukha ko!? Erlinda!

Erlinda: Ah mamaw pandikit po iyan sa sapatos.


Mamaw: Bakit hindi mo sinabi erlinda!!!
Erlinda: Mamaw sinasabi ko nga po. Ayaw niyo pong makinig sa akin.
Mamaw: Hindi! Hindi mo sinabi sa akin! (Nagsisisigaw at nammroblema)
