Rules for determining Sapinda Relations:

1. The relationship extends as far as the fifth generation in the line of ascent through the
father in case of both the parties.
2. The relationship extends as far as the third generation in the line of ascent through the
mother in case of both the parties.
3. Sapinda relationship may subsist in case of both he parties hrough the faher or in case of
both through the mother; or it may subsist in case of one of them through the father and
in case of the other through the mother.
4. The line is traced upwards in case of both the parties counting each of them as the first
generation; the generations in the line of ascent whether five or there are to be counted
inclusive of the persons concerned and the common ancestor or ancestress.
5. The line of ascent to be traced is not restricted to male ancestors. In tracing the line of
ascent to the fifth generation through the father there can be the intervention of both male
and female ascendants; similarly in tracing the line of ascent to the third generation
through the mother there can be the intervention of both male and female ascendants.
