LIGHTING DESIGN-LUMEN METHOD
If E is the desired general illuminance in lux over A m2 area of the work
plane, the maintained luminous flux must be E.A lumens.

The luminous flux reaching the work plane depends upon:

a) lumen output of the lamps
b) type of luminaire,
c) proportion of the room,
d) reflectance of material surfaces of the room,
e) depreciation in the lumen output of the lamps afer burning their rated life
and depreciation due to dirt collecton on luminaires and room surfaces.

Step-1: Decide the required illuminance on work plane

Recommended illuminance levels for different visual tasks in building

interiors and the limiting values of glare index are to be taken based on the
values provided in the IS codes.

For general teaching spaces, lecture halls and class rooms, the recommended range of
service illuminance is 200-300-500 lux.

For general filing offices, the recommended range of service illuminance is 200-300-
500 lux.

Step-2: Decide the type of lamp and luminaire

A preliminary assessment must be made of the type of lighting required, a

decision most often made as a function of both aesthetics aid economics.
Based on the assessment the suitable lamp aid luminaires are selected.

For the selected lamp, get the initial lamp lumens from the manufacturers
catalogue or from the IS code.

For the chosen classroom layout, the chosen luminaire is the

with a polycarbonate cover

Initial luminaire efficacy- 91 lm/W

Initial luminous flux- 3500 lm
Initial input power- 38.5 W
Geometry- Width- 0.22m, length- 1.24 m

Step-3: Collect the room data

OFFICE ROOM

Step-4: Calculate room index

The relative dimensions of a room may be expressed as a room index. For

Direct, Semi direct, Direct- Indirect and General diffuse luminaires:
For Semi indirect and Indirect luminaires:

where L is the length and W is the width of the room. Hm is the mounting
height of the luminaire above the work plane and Hc is the height of the
ceiling above the work plane.

Since the chosen luminaire is of the direct luminaire type, the room index would be
found with the help of formula 1.
Room Index (for classroom) = 1.71
Room index (for office room) = 0.67

Step-5: To calculate the number of fittings required using the following

formula

The lumens reaching the workplane due to number of lamps would be

Nlamp * lamp * *d

or
Nluminaire* *
luminaire
*d

These must be equal to the product of required illuminance, E and the floor
area of the work plane, A.
Therefore, Nlamp/Nluminaire=

Where, Nlamp/Nluminaire= the number of lamps/luminaires required

lamp
/ = the luminous flux of each lamp/luminaire in lumens
luminaire

=Utilization factor or the ratio of the flux reaching the

work plane and the flux generated by the lamps is known as coefficient of
utilization, which is, 0.5 for the selected space
=Maintenance factor or the ratio of illumination on a
given area after a period of time to the initial illumination on the same area,
which 0.7 for the selected space.

for the selected classroom, Nlamp= 300*101.3417
