ASU School of Music, Dance and Theatre

Safety Protocols

The ASU School of Music, Dance and Theatre has developed school-specific policies due to the scientific data on
the production of aerosols when playing a wind or brass instrument, singing, dancing, and acting. All Arizona State
University-wide policies apply, but they are supplemented by the school’s policies, which are specific to music,
dance and theatre practice, and rehearsal and performance scenarios.

Community of Care training and kits

All on-campus ASU students, staff and faculty must participate in a “Community of Care” training program
designed to inform, educate and encourage healthy living and learning on campus and as a member of the ASU
community. ASU will also have a community-wide communications campaign to remind students, employees and
campus visitors of public health protocols to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

All on-campus students will receive a “Community of Care” kit containing two face coverings, a thermometer, hand
sanitizer and other items for use in maintaining their health and wellness on campus. The university will have these
items available for restocking. Faculty and staff will receive similar kits.

Cleaning and Personal Hygiene

• All ASU buildings — including residence halls and classrooms — will receive a thorough cleaning with
medical-grade products followed by a fogging system cleanse prior to occupancy this fall.
• During the semester, all buildings will receive a thorough cleaning once per day, and high-touch surfaces
will be cleaned twice daily.
• Everyone is required to practice good hand hygiene (soap in restrooms and sanitizing stations provided).
• Signage reinforcing the importance of hand hygiene for virus control will be posted throughout the
buildings.
• Students and faculty are responsible for surface cleaning of equipment/instruments used before and after
classes (supplies provided).

Requiring face coverings at ASU locations

• Everyone must wear a face covering while in ASU buildings at all times, with some exceptions noted
below in protocols specific to music, dance and theatre. This includes all classes.
• Face coverings are also required in outdoor community spaces where physical distancing is not possible.
• A supply of extra disposable face coverings will be available for those that need one in the Music main
office and the Dance and Theatre main office.

Monitor Personal Health Symptoms.

• Advancing the well-being of the ASU community is a full team effort. Our actions impact the lives and
health of others, and being mindful of our health during this pandemic will help ensure the safety of
others.

• In an effort to keep our community healthy, all students, faculty and staff will be required to submit a
daily health check.

• Submitting the daily health check takes less than a minute and can be done via the ASU Mobile App, the
healthcheck.asu.edu website or by calling 844-448-0031.
• Each morning, students and employees will be prompted to submit their daily health check before
starting their day. Sun Devils will respond to a brief set of questions and get an immediate
recommendation on whether to proceed with learning and working as usual.

• Students and employees should monitor their temperature each day. If their temperature is 100.4
degrees or higher, or they have any symptoms, they should stay home and seek health advice.

• Exposure management is also a critical part of this app. Students and employees can opt-in to share
COVID-19 test results and campus locations. While not required to share this information with the app,
the more people who opt in, the safer we can keep our community.

• For more information on the university’s health and safety protocols, teaching modalities, and planning
for the fall, visit: www.asu.edu/about/fall-2020

Staff Offices and Low Density.

• To maintain low density in our buildings, staff in-person hours will be adjusted, and most staff will work
both in-person and remotely.
• Front Office and Academic Affairs staff will publish in-person work schedules. These schedules will be
announced via email and on the website.
• Academic Affairs staff will maintain virtual office hours via Zoom for students. These schedules will be
announced via email and on the website.

Campus Visitors to ASU locations

• Visitors to any ASU location are expected to adhere to established, posted guidelines. This includes
observing physical distancing measures, wearing face coverings and answering health-screening
questions.

Teaching Modalities
• Courses will be taught in a variety of in-person, hybrid in-person and ASUSync, and online versions this fall.
• You should hear from each of your professors before school begins, and you are encouraged to reach out
directly with questions regarding the specifics of their courses, as each professor is handling instruction
differently.
• As mentioned above, classroom capacities have been adjusted for appropriate physical distancing, so you will
have situations where you are asked to attend class in-person for specific days, and via ASUSync on other
days.
• Students who are unable to come to campus for any reason can attend via ASUSync. You should reach out
directly to your professors to let them know you plan to attend classes via ASUSync, so that you can discuss
accommodation for time zone differences if you are living out of state.

Optimizing environments for physical distancing

• Please maintain a minimum 6-foot distance from others at all times in all buildings and all areas of the
campus.
• Congregating before/after classes and rehearsals, in lounge areas, and in patio spaces surrounding all
buildings is prohibited. Faculty are to dismiss classes in groups to minimize congregating and facilitate safe
traffic flow.

MDT Safety Protocols, pg. 2

• Additional distancing guidelines apply to any singing or playing of wind and brass instruments, dancing
and acting.
• Plexiglas shield installations will be placed in high-traffic areas, but every member of the community must
be attentive to physical distancing.

Disclaimer
All guidance and polices above are subject to change based on recommendations from the CDC and Arizona
Department of Health Services. For the most up to date information, please visit:

Music, Dance and Theatre Room Capacities

Classroom Capacities for Aerosol Producing Activity
We have developed class capacities for woodwind, brass, voice, movement, and acting performance classes
based on recommended physical distance for the primary discipline practiced in the space. These are lower
than the standard room capacity due to the requirements for aerosol producing activities.

Faculty teaching lecture classes in any of these rooms without aerosol production and with everyone wearing
face coverings at all times may use the rooms’ posted capacity, and if their class enrollment is lower than half
they can meet in the class. If their class enrollment is larger than half, they must split the class in half rotating
attendance in-person and via ASU Sync.
