Educating English Language Learners One Pager

A visual that represents the chapter in some way:

One question: What are the performance

benchmarks for English Language Learners
in middle school (specifically in a science
classroom)?

One new thing you learned: I learned that

teachers can help English Language
Learners through the use of embedded
instruction, which is displaying word
meanings through child friendly definitions.
This is an effective technique for teaching
vocabulary when the vocabulary is not
conceptually complex.

One quote that stood out to you: “In the middle grades, visual supports include
graphic organizers such as diagrams, tables, and concept maps for science” (Third
principle). This quote was important to me because I plan to teach middle school
science, and I hope I can display information in many forms (graphs, tables, charts,
etc.) to help students understand difficult topics.

One connection: When I was learning my second language (Spanish) in middle

school and high school, the teacher incorporated many of the strategies mentioned
in the article for learning a second language. Specifically, we focused on the
importance of classroom discussion and speaking the language, as well as the use
of charts, diagrams, and songs to cover key concepts and vocabulary.

One thing from the chapter that you could incorporate into your classroom: I
love the idea of using the 5 E’s approach (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate,
and Evaluate) in my science classroom! I feel like this activity will be successful
for English Language Learners because it involves the student and allows them to
investigate key topics and ideas in depth.
