2. FIRE TRIANGLE

Before a fire can ignite there are three elements that are required. These are Fuel, Oxygen and
Heat which together form what is known as the Fire Triangle. Therefore in-order to extinguish a fire it
can be done by removing any one of these elements which can be done in many different ways
depending on the element you are trying to remove from the equation.

2.1 Fuel
Some people will think "How do you take the

fuel away from a fire?" or "Easier said than to do."

In fact, taking the fuel away happens daily in fire scenarios. For example, if there's a fire from a gas leak,
you'll just turn the valve off, or by a chimney fire, you'll just take the burning soot out of the chimney.
2.2 Oxygen
Fire will go off when no oxygen is able to

reach the fuel. If you use a glass on a candle light, the candle will eventually go off due there's no Oxygen
to supply the fire. If there's a fire in a saucepan, you'll simple place a cover on it, and the fire will go out.
If you're not able to cover the fire with any of the mentioned above, you'll use Firefighting Foam.
Firefighting Foam blocks Oxygen on reaching the Fuel, causing the Heat go lower and the fire will go out.
2.3 Heat
To take the heat away, you use water,
eventually the heat of the fire will cool down, forcing the fire to go out.

There are several things where you shouldn't use Water on like liquid leaks as you'll spray the liquid
away or even some liquids are very dangerous when combined with water. But on regular fires, you'll
use water. Also, you never use water on a saucepan fire as it'll create a fire blast! (Do not try this unless
in approved Fire Trainings.) ((Also, do not try this at home.))

3. SUICIDAL CALLS

Upon the moment we receive a call about a suicidal threat, Truck is dispatched as this unit has the
proper equipment to handle such a scene safely. Make sure you should down the road or surrounding
area with help from PD/SD so you have enough and a safe space to work. If the person is up on a higher
altitude, e.g. a bridge, park up underneath the suicidal person and make the preparations to prevent the
person from hurting himself.
1. Park up your vehicle properly near the scene.

2. Call for PD/SD and have them shut down the road or surrounding area.

3. If no Psychologist is present or dispatched by OCD, have OCD dispatch one if available.

4. Grab the inflatable jumppad from the Truck.

5. Connect the portable exhaust fan to it.

6. Turn on the portable exhaust fan and wait until the cushion if fully filled with air.

7. Inform other agencies and/or colleagues on scene that cushion is ready.

4. TRAPPED INDIVIDUALS

It might be that a person gets stuck at high altitude. To get a person down, the aerial can be used. It is
important that you consider the aerial stability when placing the aerial apparatus at a scene. Nowadays,
the aerial ladders can achieve to be placed perpendicular to the long axis of the vehicle and remain
stable and strong enough to ensure the safety. However, always use common sense before deploying
the aerial, e.g. take the slope of the aerial into account.
1. Park up your vehicle properly near the scene, do not deploy the aerial yet.

2. Call for PD/SD for crowd/traffic control if necessary.

3. Check the surroundings and determine which spot it fit enough for deployment.

4. Drive and park your vehicle to the desired spot and deploy the aerial with the controls. Try to
place the ladder just at the bottom of the window/roof/branch to have easy access to the victim.

5. With multiple victims that needs to be rescued, always make sure the victim and firefighters are
off the aerial before repositioning the aerial.

6. Once everybody is safely down on the ground, place the aerial back on top of the Truck,
covering the long axis of it.

5. EXTERIOR ATTACK & VENTILATION

Upon arrival on a fire scene there are several things that should be done before you can enter a building.
The has to be a decision made whether the attack will be offensive or defensive. When a structure has
become fully involved in flames (exterior walls on fire, roof caving in, etc), with an interior attack deemed
- at that point in time - unfeasible or unsafe, Firefighters must perform what's known as a defensive
exterior attack. This involves using multiple attack lines (live lines and/or, if necessary, 2.5" lines). Aerial
attacks are also often preferred - the Ladder Truck has a Deluge Gun at the top of its ladder. The Incident
Commander should give this command, keep in mind to inform him or her about the situation at all
times.

5.1 Exterior Attack
1. The Exterior Team should begin to suppress the fire, cool the surroundings and if necessary use
the Deluge Gun (Do this only when it’s really necessary.)

2. Spray towards the fire from a safe location, if possible, make sure that the wind isn’t against
you.

3. Make sure to clear the way for the Interior Team so they can pull out easily and safely (remove
any obstructions, extinguish fires near the exit.)

4. Try to make sure that the fire won’t spread.

5. If there are civilians coming out of the building, make sure to direct them to the medical crew
on scene and report it to the Incident Command. If there aren’t any Medical Crew on scene, make sure
to ask for it.
5.2 Ventilation
Ventilation is very important as well. By

this, you’ll let the smoke come out of the building so it’s safer to enter for fire investigation or other
things where you, police, other emergency workers or civilians have to be in the building. When it’s not
required, don’t create any unnecessary damage such as sawing parts of the roof off or smashing
windows.

5.2.1 Vertical Ventilation
Vertical Ventilation can be

done by using the Circular- or Chainsaw on the roof, to let the smoke come out from the roof. Make sure
that the roof is stable before you do this. Use a pick pole for example to pick in the ground and use your
feet to pitch on the roof.
5.2.2 Horizontal Ventilation
Horizontal Ventilation can

be done by opening windows or creating holes in the wall. Try to make sure that you’ll open windows
instead of breaking anything.
5.2.3 Portable Exhaust Fan
When there are openings in

the building to let the smoke come out, but it doesn’t happen quick enough or the smoke is having
difficulties leaving the building, use a Portable Exhaust Fan, found in the Engine, to get the smoke out
faster.

[/divbox]
