Language Varieties
In the video “5 Things About "the Philippine Language" You Probably Did Not Know” by
Kirby Araullo there are ideas on which he shared contradicting and elaborating the post of
Buzzfeed Philippines "36 of the most beautiful words in the Philippine Language".
Here are my insights, starting with number one he said “There is no such things as
Philippine Language” and suddenly proceeds to number two. For me it is quite vague on what
does he means in his statement that there is no Philippine language in which he did not explain
further for his international audience. However for his Filipino audience it is understood that it
should be Filipino language instead of Philippines language.
Proceeding to number two, he clearly stated that there are hundreds of indigenous
languages in the Philippines which is a fact. Philippines has Tagalog, Sugbuhanon, Iloko,
Pangasinan, Hiligaynon, Bikol, Kapampangan, and Waray to name a few. In number three, I agree
with the idea that these are commonly mistaken by People as a dialect. Well in fact these are
Languages and they are not just mere dialect. Dialects for examples are British English, American
English, Manila Tagalog and Batangas Tagalog. In simpler terms dialects evolve from the same
language and Tagalog from Cebuano is a two different language.
In number four, it talks about the 1987 constitution which declares Filipino a standardized
version of Tagalog as a national and official language of the Philippines along with English. In
number five, he says how diverse is the Philippines, and is made up of many ethnicity and
linguistic group which is a fact. Philippines is truly beautiful and astounding by the fact that it is
diverse however in his last statement telling that Filipino is different from one another and other
identities doesn’t conform to that of being a Filipino, I beg to disagree. There may be hundreds of
languages, different ethnicity, linguistic group and identities. For me these differences is what
makes us Filipino. We may have one national language but we all know that being a Filipino is
not all about speaking the national language, it is more than that. Filipinos may speak different
languages however Filipinos are hospitable, generous, religious, family-oriented, helpful,
hardworking, loving, caring and has big smiles. These personality and characteristics is what
makes us a Filipino.
