General Impression
The American Staffordshire Terrier should give the impression of great strength for
his size, a well put-together dog, muscular, but agile and graceful, keenly alive to his
surroundings. He should be stocky, not long-legged or racy in outline. His courage is
proverbial.
Head
Medium length, deep through, broad skull, very pronounced cheek muscles, distinct
stop; and ears are set high. Ears - Cropped or uncropped, the latter preferred.
Uncropped ears should be short and held rose or half prick. Full drop to be penalized.
Eyes - Dark and round, low down in skull and set far apart. No pink eyelids. Muzzle -
Medium length, rounded on upper side to fall away abruptly below eyes. Jaws well
defined. Underjaw to be strong and have biting power. Lips close and even, no
looseness. Upper teeth to meet tightly outside lower teeth in front. Nose definitely
black.
Neck
Heavy, slightly arched, tapering from shoulders to back of skull. No looseness of skin.
Medium length.
Shoulders
Strong and muscular with blades wide and sloping.
Back
Fairly short. Slight sloping from withers to rump with gentle short slope at rump to
base of tail. Loins slightly tucked.
Body
Well-sprung ribs, deep in rear. All ribs close together. Forelegs set rather wide apart
to permit chest development. Chest deep and broad.
Tail
Short in comparison to size, low set, tapering to a fine point; not curled or held over
back. Not docked.
Legs
The front legs should be straight, large or round bones, pastern upright. No semblance
of bend in front. Hindquarters well-muscled, let down at hocks, turning neither in nor
out. Feet of moderate size, well-arched and compact. Gait must be springy but without
roll or pace.
Coat
Short, close, stiff to the touch, and glossy.
Color
Any color, solid, parti, or patched is permissible, but all white, more than 80 per cent
white, black and tan, and liver not to be encouraged.
Size
Height and weight should be in proportion. A height of about 18 to 19 inches at
shoulders for the male and 17 to 18 inches for the female is to be considered
preferable.
Faults
Faults to be penalized are: Dudley nose, light or pink eyes, tail too long or badly
carried, undershot or overshot mouths.

General look: it must give the idea of great power compared to its size, well built,

It must be massive, not tall on the legs nor thin in the outlines. It is strongly brave.
Head: middle length, deep. Large cranium, strong masseters, evident stop, ears
towards high. Ears: better uncutted, but they can also be cutted. Uncutted ears must be
short and brough at half-rose or erected. Pendulous ears are to be penalized. Ears:
dark and rounded, low on cranium and well distanced. Eyelids never depigmented.
Face: middle length, rounded in the higher part, gets thinner under the eyes. Well
defined jaws. The lower jaw must be strong and with a good bite. Adherent lips,
regular, not falling. The upper teeth must strictly lean to the external part of the lower
teeth. Tartufe must be black.
Neck: heavy, a bit arcuated, gets thinner going from shoulder to the back of cranium.
No exceeding skin. Middle length.
Shoulder: strong and muscled with large and well bended blade-bones.
Back: quite short. Slightly degradating going from withers to the end of kidney with a
slight, short curve from croup to the tail base. Kidney slightly retracted on the sides.
Body: well-hooped, backly deep ribs. Close between themselves. Well distanced front
legs, in order to allow the thorax development. Large thorax.
Legs: the front ones must be straight, with large and round bone, stright metacarpus,
no signs of curving. Back must be well muscled with low gambrels, not oriented
neither inwards nor outwards. Middle feet, well arcued. Walk must be elastic, without
tending to lurching or ambio.
Colour: may be of any homogenous tint, brindled or with two colours, one of which
must be white. Pure white, white more than 80%, seadog black and liver-colour are
not to be encouraged.
Size: proportional height and weight. The ideal withers height is 18-19 ins. (46-48
cm.) for males and 17-18 ins. (43-46 cm.) for females.
Defects: depigmented tartufe, light or pink eyes, long or badly kept tail, prognatism
and enognatism are to be penalized.

Deşi stramoşii acestei rase provin din Anglia, dezvoltarea American Staffordshire
Terrierului este povestea unei rase cu adevărat Americane. Amstafful a avut un rol
deosebit de important în succesul fermierilor şi coloniştilor americani care au
construit această ţară.

Câinele acelor vremuri era folosit la diverse munci cum ar fi: paza şi supravegherea
gospodăriilor, câini de companie şi "babysitters". Alţii au fost folosiţi pe post de
gladiatori care luptau în arene împotriva altor câini.[2]
Până în prima parte al secolului XIX. Bulldogul a fost crescut în Anglia în scopul
bătăilor cu tauri, numite şi bull-baiting. În 1835 Parlamentul Britanic a adoptat Legea
Protecţiei Animalelor ce a dus la interzicerea acestor "sporturi" crude. Crescătorii care
apreciau aceste sporturi sângeroase şi-au îndreptat atenţia spre bătăile între câini,
deoarece era mai uşor de ascuns de ochii autoritaţilor. Pentru acest "sport" bulldogul
s-a dovedit a fi prea lent. Crescătorii au găsit combinaţia perfectă îmbinând forţa şi
tenacitatea bulldogului cu agilitatea, spiritul şi agresivitatea terrierului. Se crede că
Bulldogul a fost încrucişat cu White English Terrierul sau Black and Tan Terrierul
pentru a obţine un câine cu caracteristici superioare de luptător, Fox Terrierul fiind şi
el un posibil candidat. Date concrete nu ne stau la dispoziţie pentru a determina care
dintre cele trei rase de terrieri erau folosite, dar este cert că dintre încrucişarea
bulldogului şi terrierului a resultat câinele numit la acea vreme Bull-and-Terrier, Half
and Half, Pit Dog sau Pit Bull Terrier. Mai târziu, în Anglia, s-a acceptat denumirea
oficială de Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Aceşti câini şi-au găsit drumul spre America în
jurul anilor a 1870 unde i-au numit Pit Dog, American Bull Terrier, Yankee Terrier
iar mai târziu American Pit Bull Terrier si American Staffordshire Terrier.[3]

• Cap: De lungime medie, adâncit înspre corp, craniul lat, muşchii obrajilor
foarte pronunţaţi. Urechi - pot fi cupate sau necupate, dar se preferă cele
necupate. Urechile necupate trebuie să fie scurte si purtate "în petală de
trandafir" sau semierecte. Se penalizează urechile complet căzute. Ochi -
închişi la culoare şi rotunzi plasaţi destul de jos pe craniu, bine depărtaţi şi
înfundaţi în orbite. Pleoapele nu au voie să fie roz. Bot - de lungime medie,
rotunjit în partea sa superioară şi coborând abrupt sub ochi. Buze - strânse şi
netede. Maxilare bine definite cu mare forţă de muscatură. Dinţii din faţă se
îmbină perfect. Nas neapărat negru.
• Spate Îndeajuns de scurt. Greabănul coboară uşor spre crupă, formând o pantă
scurtă până la baza cozii. Şalele uşor ridicate.
• Corp: Coastele sunt bine arcuite, adunate; cutie toracică destul de lungă,
adâncă pe toată lungimea. Picioarele din faţă sunt depărtate pentru a permite
dezvoltarea pieptului care este adânc şi larg.
• Defecte: Trufa pătată, ochii de culoare deschisă, pleoapele pătate, coada prea
lungă sau purtată necorespunzător, prognatism superior sau inferior.[8]
Aceşti câini sunt curajoşi, tenace şi prietenoşi. Extrem de loial si afectuoşi, sunt
capabili de orice pentru a-i face plăcere stăpânului.
• Căminul ideal: Amstafful are nevoie de un stăpân care este dispus să-şi
petrecă mult timp cu el. Comunicarea şi încrederea reciprocă sunt elemente
foarte importante în creşterea unui Amstaff.[9]
• Amstafful poate fi predispus la displazia de şold, dar în mult mai mică măsură
decăt alte rase. OFA i-a classat pe locul 21 cu un procentaj de 26.0% anormal
şi 71.7% normal.
• Displazia de cot este rar întâlnită la această rasă. OFA îi situeaza pe locul 12
cu un procentaj de 17.8% anormal şi 81.4% normal.
• Există un risc minim de afecţiuni ale genunchilor. Patela luxată este exemplul
cel mai comun din această categorie, Amstafful fiind clasat de OFA pe poziţia
72 cu procentajul de 1.3% anormal şi 98.7% normal.
Amstafful uneori poate fi afectat de alergii ale pielii, infecţii urinare şi boli
autoimune. Spondiloza si Osteoartrita sunt des întâlnite la câinii mai bătrâni.

Standard
Appearance:
The American Staffordshire Terrier has a stocky muscular body that is agile and athletic.
Their broad powerful head features a medium muzzle and a commanding set of jaws.
The tail tapers to a point, and teeth that close in a scissors bite.
The ears should be short and held rose or pricked. Cropped ears are not allowed for show dogs in South Africa.
The coat is short, thick and shiny. You may find American Staffordshire Terriers in a variety of colours, but dogs must not be more than 80% white, black, tan or liver. The
breed is classified by KUSA (Kennel Union of South Africa) as the “AmericanStaffordshire Terrier”.
Temperament:
American Staffordshire Terriers are happy, social, outgoing, extremely loyal and affectionate.
Over the past 50 years, selective breeding has produced American Staffordshire Terriers that are trustworthy, stable, and especially good dogs with children.
They constantly aim to please, and are highly intelligent, obedient and courageous. It has given outstanding results as a guardian of property, but is at the same time
esteemed as a companion dog.
This breed may be dog aggressive. Socialize very thoroughly when young to curve any dog aggressive tendencies.

The American Staffordshire Terrier is generally a healthy breed. Some known concerns include hip dysplasia, cataracts, and congenital heart disease.

American Staffordshire Terriers will do okay in a townhouse or cluster, but will not be recommended. This breed must have plenty of regular exercise and needs to be taken
on long daily walks. They prefer warm climates. climates.
