Royal Hampton is a collection of luxury hotels with 21 properties across England. Established in 1989 and with a
turnover of GBP17m, the business is now extending its upscale chain into Europe.

Challenge
Royal Hampton wanted to increase bar sales at its flagship hotel in London.
Manager, John Smith, was frustrated that sales were dropping. “Customers were bypassing us in favour of the bar
next door,” he says.
He knew music was a powerful customer draw, but needed something extra. When he discovered Skylark Pianos,
Smith jumped at the chance to try a self-playing piano.
Solution
“We looked into buying a normal piano, but found hiring a professional pianist expensive and limiting,” says Smith.
“When we learned that the piano could play 10,000 songs from an iPod, it meant we could entertain guests round the
clock, at no extra cost.”
“The Skylark gives us the crowd appeal of a live piano with the flexibility of a jukebox. And, it attracts more people
into the bar,” Smith continues.
Results
Six weeks after installing the piano, the hotel reported the following results:
• Sales of cocktails increased from 500 to 2500 units a week.
• Average spend increased by £4.70 per person.
• A 450% increase in bar sales.
