A COMPARATIVE THEORETICAL–EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS OF SETTLEMENTS OF SHALLOW

FOUNDATIONS ON GRANULAR SOIL

The paper presents a brief description of experiment within the research project
"Theoretical and experimental analysis of interaction of shallow reinforced concrete
foundations and soil for the purpose of improvement of national regulations and
implementation of Eurocode system" where in situ tests of a series of reinforced
concrete foundation footing were performed, by loading until failure.

As a rule, methods for calculation of shallow foundations settlement on granular

soils overestimate the expected settlement, and underestimate soil bearing
capacity, which results in a conservative foundation design.

In order to test accuracy and reliability of the different settlements prediction

methods, a comparative analysis of settlements calculated using these methods and
those measured during experiment, was performed.

Reliability Analysis of Shallow Foundations Bearing Capacity on Sand

Bearing capacity of shallow foundation is one of the most challenging problems for engineers.

The difficulty comes from multiple sources of variability and uncertainty. There is an
uncertainty in live load. Soil properties including: unit weight, cohesion, and angle of friction
represent sources of variability in the determining bearing capacity.

The aim of this paper is to calculate the reliability index of Terzaghi’s theory and to propose
a resistance factor that corresponds a reliability index of 4.

NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF DEFORMATIONS OF THE RECTANGULAR (SQUARE AND STRIP)

SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS

In this contribution we shall deal with numerical analysis of the vertical deformation
(settlement), deflection and relative deformation (relative settlement, relative deflection,
flexibility) of rigid and flexible rectangular (square and strip) shallow foundations.

Presented analysis is oriented on the effect of stiffness of system “foundation – subsoil”

and bond (bi-directional bond and one-directional bond with and without friction) on the
values of the deformations.

In the foundations design and assessment according to the limit states the corresponding
deformations have to be known.

Undrained vertical bearing capacity of perforated shallow foundations

Perforated shallow foundations are commonly used as mud mats to support subsea
infrastructure such as pipeline end manifolds and terminations.

The perforations may be included in the foundation design to allow water to escape during
installation, or to reduce uplift resistance on decommissioning.

Perforated geometries, often involving a single perforation, can also be efficient for larger
gravity-based foundations. However, perforations decrease the available foundation
bearing area, which reduces the capacity of the foundation during operation.

This paper examines the impact of the degree of perforation on undrained vertical bearing
capacity.

RELIABILITY-BASED ROBUST AND OPTIMAL DESIGN OF SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS IN

COHESIONLESS SOIL IN THE FACE OF UNCERTAINTY

Quantification of uncertainties in soil parameters and geotechnical models is a prerequisite

for a reliability-based design.

If there is abundant amount of high quality data that can characterize the adopted
geotechnical model and its parameters perfectly, the result of reliability analysis will be a
certain value (a fixed reliability index or failure probability).

Then, the reliability-based design will be a straightforward process and the least cost design
that satisfies the constraint of a target failure probability can be selected as the final design.

If uncertainty exists in the statistical characterization of the adopted geotechnical models

and their parameters, as is usually encountered in geotechnical practice, then the computed
failure probability will not be a fixed value and the design decision will not be as
straightforward, as there will be uncertainty as to whether the design actually meets the
failure probability requirement.
