When building the G-Class Professional, we

have left nothing to chance. After all, durabi-
lity, reliability and lasting value are traits
which we are extremely proud of. Each indivi-
dual cross-country vehicle is practically hand-
built, as only the hands, minds and hearts of
experienced professionals can ensure the spe-
cial qualities for which this classic vehicle is
renowned. The extremely robust frame of the
“G”, comprising sheet-steel sections with a
thickness of up to 4 mm, is held together by
over 6400 manually applied welds. The frame
is surface-treated and waxed, while the vehi-
cle floor features an additional plastic coating.
And all the detachable body parts are meticu-
lously primed and finished with several coats
of paint. This means that the “G” can easily
withstand water, road salt or even Sahara sand.

thoroughly tested on our specially designed
off-road circuits. Despite the vast array of
vehicle variants and possible applications,

16 Diesel engine and transmission
A professional approach requires great drive.
Smooth and powerful: The CDI diesel engine with automatic transmission.
As well as being an impressive performer, the
high-torque diesel engine is highly economial.
Seldom has a genuine off-roader provided
such a compelling mix of power and effi-
ciency. Direct fuel injection comes courtesy of
an optimised common-rail injection system,
which ensures low fuel consumption. The
required injection pressure is always available
in a central fuel line when the engine is
running. It is stored in the line and supplied to
individually controlled valves as and when
required.
Although you do not see much of this process,
you are sure to notice the benefits: a quiet and
extremely powerful engine offering an
impressive output, even at low revs, slow
speeds on rough terrain and on extreme uphill
gradients.
The standard-fit fuel filter with a water sepa-
rator provides highly effective protection
against contaminated fuel for the engine.
Sports stars hone their movements to
perfection over a period of years, their theory:
Being that smooth, fluid movements make for
outstanding performance.
Inspired by this, the Mercedes-Benz engineers
have developed an extremely fluid sequence of
movements for the standard 5-speed automa-
tic transmission. The gear changes are barely
perceptible.
So you are always in the right gear, leaving you
to enjoy the superlative handling and quiet
ride.

The off-road capability of the G-Class Professional.
Impressive output alone is not enough to drive
you forward. High levels of power need to be
harnessed and intelligently controlled.
The G-Class meets this challenge head-on with
its perfectly harmonised, standard-specifica-
tion driving systems. Its legendary off-road
expertise is largely down to two precisely
located rigid axles with high torsional flexing,
long spring travel, permanent all-wheel drive,
the synchromesh transfer case and three 100%
differential locks.
The three differential locks can be individually
selected in a logical preset sequence during the
journey for optimum off-road performance.

If one of the wheels loses traction, the force is
distributed to the wheels that offer the best
grip. Even the grip from a single wheel can
provide enough traction for your G-Class
Professional. In addition, by activating the
low-range gearbox, e.g. “low-range” mode,
you can ensure optimum traction even at low

Your G-Class Professional can climb, clamber

Naturally, your G-Class Professional offers all

the comfort you could possibly need. After all,
your job is hard enough.

The air conditioning system helps to keep you

cool in the warmer weather, while auxiliary
heating and heated seats make the passenger
compartment more pleasant in icy temperatu-
res.

To ensure optimum visibility in any situation,

the lights are fitted with grilles to protect them
against dirt build-up and branches, and the
headlamps feature a wash-wipe system.

Load compartement. The load compartement is easily accessible via the double-wing tailgate. The floor made from
robust hardwood can take practically any type of load - and does not mind getting dirty.

30 Paintwork

Build to last.
Paintwork on the G-Class Professional.

1934. The first “Silver Arrow” must be the

only Mercedes-Benz ever to have started out
in life with less-than-perfect paintwork. When
the Mercedes-Benz engineers put the newly
developed W 25 racing car on the scales before
the Eifel Grand Prix at the Nürburgring in
1934, the 300 hp car weighed 751 kilograms -
one kilogram over the strict weight limit
imposed by the international racing federation.
“Well, that takes the shine off things, “ mused
Mercedes racing manager Alfred Neubauer -
then realised he had just put his finger on the
solution. He promptly ordered the engineers to
sand down the white paintwork, thus exposing
the silver-coloured aluminiumbodywork. This
shed the necessary weight and the rest is
history: Manfred von Brauchitsch won the race
and it was not long before the press were
raving about the “Silver Arrows”, as they
quickly dubbed them.

Back to the present day. Of course, things Colours

would not have been so easy for the team if

work developed by Mercedes-Benz. This
newly developed clearcoat is much tougher
than previous clearcoats and has a more
durable sheen which is noticeably more
intense. Both clearcoat paint finishes are more 9040 black 9197 obisdian black 7368 flint grey
scratch-resistant and less susceptible to
weather and environmental influences.

Take-back of end-of-life vehicles. Coming full circle. At the end of its long life, you can return your G-Class to us for environment-
friendly disposal in accordance with the EC End-Of-Life Vehicle Directive1). But this day lies a long way off.
