Amaravati sculpture
● Amaravati sculpture, flourished in the Andhra region of southeastern India from about
the 2nd century BC to the end of the 3rd century AD, during the rule of the Satavahana
dynasty.
● It is well-known for its superb reliefs, which are among the world’s finest examples of
narrative sculpture.
● The themes of Amravati architecture is based on Buddha’s life and his previous births
(Jataka stories).
Chundan vallam
● Chundan vallam is also known as Kerala snake boats outside Kerala.
● It's essentially a long canoe that can seat up to 100 rowers and can have a length
between 100 and 138 feet in length.
● Recently, Champions Boat League (CBL) has been conceived by tourism officials in
Kerala on the model of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to transform the state’s
legendary and historically-significant ‘vallamkali’ (snake boat races) into a world-class
sporting event.
Ottan Thullal
● Ottan Thullal or Ottamthullal is a dance-drama performing art form of
Kerala.
● It was introduced by Kunchan Nambiar, one of the Prachina
Kavithrayam (three famous Malayalam language poets).
● It is accompanied by a mridangam (a barrel shaped double headed
drum) or an idakka (drum and cymbal).
Zamzam
● Zamzam or ZemZem is a well in the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
● Many Haj pilgrims bring the holy water from the well for family members/relatives.
Chaukhandi Stupa
● It's a Buddhist stupa in Uttar Pradesh's Sarnath.
● It has been declared to be a "protected area of national importance” by the
Archaeological Survey of India.
● Timeline: It was built as a terraced temple constructed during the Gupta period (4th to
6th Century). Govardhan, the son of Raja Todarmal, gave the present shape to the
Chaukhandi Stupa by built an octagonal tower to commemorate the visit of Mughal ruler
Humayun.
Thudumbu
● It's the folk art from the Kongu region ( It includes Coimbatore, Erode, Tirupur and Salem
districts) of Tamil Nadu.
● Thudumbu and Thudumbattam are played at temple festivals especially in and around
coimbatore.
● The origin of the name thudumbu has been attributed to the Thudumbars, a tribal
community.
● The members of this community used to serve and entertain the Chola, Chera and
Pandya kings.
Markandeshwar Temple
● Restoration work of Markandeshwar temple in Maharashtra by Archaeological Survey of
India is going on.
● It's also known as the “Khajuraho of Vidarbha.''
● The temples belong to the Nagara group of temples.
● The temples belong to saiva, vaishnava and sakta faith.
Ekambareswarar Temple
● Ekambareswarar Temple is a Hindu temple
dedicated to the deity Shiva.
● It's located in the town of Kanchipuram in Tamil
Nadu.
● It is significant to the Hindu sect of Saivism as
one of the temples associated with the five
elements, the Pancha Bhoota Stalas and
specifically the element of earth, or Prithvi.
● The temple architecture is of Dravidian style.
Onam Festival
● It's one of the most popular and significant harvest festivals of Kerala.
● Onam is celebrated each year in the month of August-September which according to the
Malayalam calendar is the first month of the year called Chingam.
● This festival is dedicated to the King Mahabali who though was an Asur (one with
negative thoughts ) by birth but was a Sur (one with positive thoughts) by virtue.
● It is said that Kerala never witnessed a better time than it witnessed during the rule of
King Mahabali.
● So the festival is essentially celebrated by the people to welcome the homecoming of
their dearest legendary King Mahabali into their homes.
Shondol dance
● Ladakhi Shondol dance has created history by breaking into the Guinness Book of World
Records as the largest Ladakhi dance.
● Around 408 women artists in traditional dresses performed gracefully the Shondol dance
on the occasion of the Annual Naropa Festival.
● Shondol Dance is known as the "royal dance of Ladakh" which used to be performed by
artists for King of Ladakh on special occasion.
● Naropa Festival takes places every 12 years in the Tibetan calendar to celebrate the life
of Buddhist philosopher and scholar Naropa.
● Naropa Festival is also called as the Kumbh Mela of the Himalayas.
Nuakhai
● Nua means new and khai means food. So, the festival of nuakhai is a festival to
celebrate newly harvested food by the farmers.
● It's observed to welcome the new rice of the season.
Navroz
● The Parsi New Year, also known as Navroz is celebrated every year to mark the
beginning of the new Iranian calendar.
● In Persian, ‘Nav’ means new, and ‘Roz’ stands for the day, and together it is a ‘new day’.
● Nevruz is inscribed in the list of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of
India.
