OUR MISSION

Girl Up Houston's goal is to be the

voice for girls whose rights by birth
have been taken cruelly and unjustly.
We will advocate for a greater equality
for females whether through the right
for an education, guidance for more
support in a career in STEM, or the aid
for girls that are abused or at a
disadvantage compared to males. We
will promote fundraisers and ideas to
provide resources for women to have
equal opportunities for their
intellectual, social, and economic
pursuits as well as raise awareness of
the inequality adolescent girls and
women face all over the world.

WHY A

NEWSLETTER?

Here at Girl Up Houston, we

wanted to find an easier and
more interactive way to
communicate with you! With
our newsletter, we intend to
provide you with updated
opportunity lists, local
women owned businesses to
support, inform you on
current events/women in
history, and SO much more!
One thing we can guarantee
is that each newsletter is
crafted with love and will be
catered to be relevant to
current times.

Hijab Ban in Belgium

The Belgian Constitutional Court recently passed a law
authorizing the banning of hijabs, the Islamic headscarf, in
higher education. The ban violates freedom of religion
and the right to education of Muslim women, yet is
already being upheld in several workplaces across
Belgium. In response to the decision, many protests have
sparked up both on social media and in person, with
#hijabisfightback and #donttouchmystudies trending on
Twitter and Instagram, as well as thousands of protesters
gathering in Brussels - the capital city of Belgium - to
show their disapproval over the discriminatory ban.

Femicide Around the World (Turkey and Latin America)

Recent murders of several women around the world
have begun shedding light on the highly overlooked
issue of femicide. Femicide is a sex-based hate crime,
otherwise known as the killing of females solely
because of their gender, and is an issue in several
regions around the world, particularly Turkey and
Latin America. While the Turkish government has
passed laws that promise the protection of victims
and persecution of offenders, these laws go largely
ignored, resulting in the unfair treatment of women
by the conservative Justice and Development Party.
Latin America is also another hotspot for femicide,

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC)

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, better known by her
initials as AOC, is one of the most talked about politicians in
America right now. With her groundbreaking victory in the 2018
democratic primary in Queens - the 14th congressional district of
New York - she has quickly become an inspiration to Americans
across the nation. More than just fighting for social justice issues
and advocating for less corruption in politics, AOC represents the
new generation of Americans: Progressive millennials and Gen Z
activists that are tired of sitting around and waiting for change to
happen. She threatens the status quo, introducing legislation that
will not only have an effect now, but for decades to come. By the
end of her first term in congress, she was widely known as a
national progressive icon, and - after her recent victory this June -
one can only wonder the further impact she will have on this
country and its' young citizens as she embarks on her second term.

Lina Hidalgo
As the head of Harris County’s governing body, Judge Lina
Hidalgo is the first woman to be elected county judge and only
the second to be part of the Commissioners Court here in
Houston, Texas. A Columbian-born immigrant who first came to
Houston as a teenager, she graduated from Stanford University in
2013 with a degree in political science. At only 27 years old, she
ran for the position of Harris County Judge, and in a surprising
turn of events for many, won the position. Since then, she’s faced
criticism on a wide variety of topics - everything from her youth
to her immigrant background - yet she pays them no heed,
choosing instead to focus on her mission. She serves as an
inspiration that everyone, no matter their ethnic background,
gender, or socio-economic status is capable of achieving great
things. All it requires is hard work and lots of perseverance.
