Habit & Habitat

• Generally associated with freshwater streams, rivers, lakes and ponds


• Often found in dense aquatic vegetation, shaded spots
• Lies hidden at the bottom during the day and comes to the surface
during night in search of food
• Large temperature ranges from nearly 1° to upwards of 30°C
• Omnivorous i.e algae, mosses, decaying leaves, other weeds, small
insects and debris
• Walks slowly and can swim (pleopods-abdominal appendages)
• Breeds in May-July

 Body elongated, spindle-shaped and bilaterally symmetrical


 Adult consisting of 19 appendages in 2 distinct regions –
Cephalothorax & Abdomen
 Adult males body length up to 33 cm, and females up to 29 cm
 Long rostrum with 11-14 dorsal teeth and 8-10 ventral teeth

Life history & Development
 Breeds during May-July
 About 10-50 thousand eggs laid up to five times per year
 Male deposits sperms near the genital opening of female
 After fertilization eggs comes out and fastened to the
pleopods by stick secretion
 After 18-23 days eggs were hatch
 Adult form is reached after a series of moults
 Usually live for 3-5 years
