Discussion

The experiment was completed by using geometry models to construct structures and make
measurements using measurement instrument such as Vernier calliper, micrometre and dial
indicator. From the measurements taken the taper angle was calculated. Divergence
associated in this lab results was due to errors such as the instability of floor surface, table top
and model geometry (cylinder and slip gauge). Despite the challenges faced, the taper angle
was calculated using alternative methods from direct use of protector.

For the sine bar experiment, the calculated angle was obtained by the addition of slip gauges
to form a horizontal surface on the sine bar. To obtain a perfectly horizontal surface a dial
indicator was used. Deflection in the dial indicator needle indicates an un even surface. The
height at which the sine bar was elevated and the center distance between two rollers of sine

h
bar was used to calculated the angle using the formula Sinϑ=( ).

External tapered angle in the geometry structure of rollers was obtained by first deriving

( M 2−M 1)
desired unknown variables, M1, M2, h2 and h1from the setup structure. tanθ=
2(h2−h1 )
using this formula, the tampered angle of ______ was obtained.

Finally, the internal taper angle was obtained by utilizing precision balls. M1, M2, H, d were

(M 2−M 1)
the values obtained from the experiment before used in the formula: tanθ= to
2(H−d)
attain the internal taper angle of ______.
