How to prepare for a hike
✘ Physical Conditioning
✗ It is important that a person be of good health and
reasonably fit before engaging in outdoor physical
activities. But it does not mean that a person cannot join
hiking trips just because he or she is not agile or athletic
as others.
✘ Trip Planning
✗ Planning is basic to any activity.

Tips to find your Pace during
Hiking
1. Start out a pace that seems fairly easy and walk for 5 minutes at
this pace—same length pace and same speed of step.
2. Stop and check your breathing. If normal breathing, then increase
your pace and start over. If you are breathing heavily or are
sweating, then slow down your pace.
3. Repeat this until you settle on a pace that barely raises your
breathing but does not make you sweat.
4. The next day, hike the same distance trying to keep the same
pace previously. See if it takes you the same amount of time.
When you can cover the same distance in the same time fairly
consistently, you have found a steady pace.

How is the orienteering compass used
1. Hold the compass level in the pal of your hand in front of
your stomach.
2. Position the compass so that the direction-of-travel arrow
(DTA) is pointing straight out in front of you.
3. Suppose you want to go southwest, with the compass just
resting on you’re your pal, turn the Bezel so that northwest
aligns with the DTA.
4. Still holding the compass flat in your hand and DTA
pointing straight out, turn yourself and/or your hand until
the magnetic needle points or is aligned with the North
magnetic orienting arrow or with the lines inside the
compass housing. 14
Cont.
5. Then, check where the DTA is pointing now, that is, the
direction you will be going, in this case the southwest.
6. Go to where the DTA is pointing, keep the red needle
aligned with the north magnetic orienting arrow and for
our example you are now moving southwest.
