Franklin was not the only person inventing during this time period.

Thomas Jefferson was well known for his


facilitation of agricultural advances during this time period. Agriculture was easily one of his largest scientific
interests. He believed that God had created America to be a farmland. He performed many experiments with crop
rotation, cultivation, animal breeding and pest control, among many other things, throughout his whole life.
(Jewett) Some lesser known scientists of the time were David Rittenhouse and Benjamin Rush. Rittenhouse was an
astronomer best known for creating two orreries (mechanical device that illustrates the relative positions and
motions of the planets and moons in the Solar System where the sun is the center of the system)( University of
Pennsylvania) that show solar and lunar eclipses and other phenomenal events over a 5,000 year period either
past or future. He was also the city surveyor of Philadelphia in 1774, using his observations of space to help create
canals.Benjamin Rush was a scientist and a physician during the revolutionary war. He was appointed to be the
surgeon general of the continental army, but ended up butting heads with Washington and eventually stepped away
from anything having to do with the war. He was a beloved figure in Philadelphia and was very involved with social
work surrounding the poor and slavery. (Kindig)
